Electromagnetic Theory 2019-20: Practice Problems No. VI May 6, 2020

This document contains 4 practice problems related to electromagnetic theory. Problem 1 involves calculating the force and velocity of an object in relativity. Problem 2 uses Einstein's thought experiment of a light pulse in a moving container to derive the mass-energy equivalence formula. Problem 3 asks about calculating the direction and energy of an electron scattered by a neutrino. Problem 4 is about transforming electric and magnetic fields between reference frames to make them parallel or perpendicular.

ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY 2019-20

Practice Problems No. VI

May 6, 2020

1. Classically and in relativity, force on a object is the rate of change of momentum.

(a) Show that in relativity

dv
F = γ 3m
dt
where m is the mass of the object and v its speed.

(b) For a particle moving under the influence of a constant force and starting from
rest, show that

1 F
v(t) = q t
Ft 2 m

1+ mc

(c) A rocket maintains a constant thrust and gives the speaceship an acceleration of
g that is 9.8 m s−2 . If it starts from rest, how long would it take the spaceship to
reach 0.99 c classically and in relativity?

2. Einstein’s Gedanken Experiment- Consider a pulse of light, of energy ∆E emitted

from the left end of a closed container and absorbed at the right end. The container
is free to move. Since this is a closed system, use the fact that the center of mass
must remain stationary to derive ∆E = ∆mc2

3. A massless neutrino with energy E is incident on an electron at rest and gets elas-
tically scattered in a direction perpendicular to its incident direction. Calculate the
direction and energy of the scattered electron.

4. In an inertial frame S, the electric field and the magnetic field are neither perpen-
dicular nor parallel at a particular point. Show that in a frame S 0 , moving with a
velocity v w.r.t. S, given by

β E×B
2
= 2
1+β B + E2
the fields are parallel at that point. Is there a frame in which they would be perpen-
dicular?
