FINANCIAL LITERACY

“If you want to reap financial blessings,

you have to sow financially.” - Joel Osteen

LESSON 1

TASK 1. Answer the questions in the given situation.

Mr. Ethan earns P30, 000.00 per month from employment. He spends less or more than
his total earnings each month. Sometimes he has money left over, but most of the time, he is
left with nothing and even borrows money to meet his needs and wants. Do you think there is
something wrong in the way he handles his money? Why?

⮚ Yes , I think there is something wrong on how Mr. Ethan handles his money because I
think he don’t know how to budget his money. For me, no matter how small money you
have when you know how to budget it and when to spend your money according to
what is mostly needed and not want you just want then your money will just be enough.
Budgeting is the important when we talk about money.

TASK 2. Make a simple good budget plan that shows how you can save from your monthly
school allowance to meet a short-term financial goal. Here are the things you need to do:

1. Create your short-term financial goal.

2. From your total monthly allowance, make a good budget plan to achieve your short-
term financial goal following the seven guiding principles.
3. Make a written discussion on how can you implement your budget plan and achieve
your short-term financial goal.

⮚ Monthly Allowance: 1500 pesos

⮚ Short-term financial goal

o To earn 10 pesos a day.

⮚ Daily Budget : 75 pesos

Days Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday

Transportation 34 pesos 34 pesos 34 pesos 34 pesos

Food 20 pesos 20 pesos 20 pesos 20 pesos

Other Expenses 10 pesos 10 pesos 10 pesos 10 pesos

( School Fees )

Total Expenses 64 pesos 64 pesos 64 pesos 64 pesos

Remaining daily savings : 11 pesos a day

Total saving in week: 44 pesos a week

Total saving in 1 month: 220 pesos per month

Total expenses in a month : 1,280 pesos

Total Savings in a month: 220 pesos

⮚ To achieve my short term financial goal I must learn how to budget my money. This time
I will spend money according to what I mostly needed and lessen spending money in
buying things that I only wanted.

Lesson 3

SAVINGS AND INVESTMENTS

TASK 2. If you invested P500, 000 in Equity Index Fund at a NAVPU of P90 per unit seven years
ago, how many investment units you are holding? If the NAVPU at present is now P200, how
much money did you make? What is your percentage gain? Do you think it is a good investment
if the average inflation was at 5% per annum for your whole investment period?

Computation:

Total investment at 90/ unit

500,000 = 5,555.56 total shares 7 years ago

90

Present Share

(200- 90 ) x Total Shares

(110) (5,555.56) =611,111.6 Total Income

Percentage Gain 611,111.6 = 1.22%

500,000

⮚ Yes, it is a good investment.

TODAY’S DIGITAL TOOLS

TASK 1. They’re Here and There

Enumerate the many everyday technologies available go students and teachers. Rank
them and provide basis or justification/s of your ranking. Then, compare your list with that of
your friend. Come up with an agreed ranking of technologies. Notice how your answers have
been enriched by each other.

⮚ As I compare my list to Mrs. Betarmos list I noticed that we have the same number and
rank of items listed. This implies that these items are common technologies that we
have seen in our daily lives in school.

TASK 2. Speak Up

TASK 4. Think and Reflect

There is no doubt that digital literacy plays a major role in everyone’s work/life abilities
and because our brain is not yet wired to function naturally in the digital era, we need to train
it. List down the steps you, as a future teacher, will undertake to become cyber or digital
literate. Use the acronym L-I-T-E-R-A-T-E.

L- et your mind work and not your hearts opinion in using the digital tools.

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful
people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers,
restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who
live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to
join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these
qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.” –

Lesson 1

CREATIVITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

TASK 1. Mind Mapping

You as part of the young generation, as they always say, are the pillars of our nation.
You are considered very important actors in the stage of life. You are not only “the leaders of
tomorrow, but the partners of today”. You are expected to take an active part is the creation of
ideas to improve our country and find new ways and innovative solutions to address the
country’s problems. With this in mind, work with a partner and do the activity below.

1. Identify a problem in your community (proper waste management, road repairs,

drainage system, etc.)

▪ Stuck up drainage

2. Think of creative ways to solve this problem. Reflect on your ideas, possible
solutions, and plans through a mind map. (A mind map is a visual representation of
your thoughts and ideas). Design your own mind map.

TASK 2. Torrance Task

3. After designing your mind map, think of a tangible object which you can use to solve
the problem temporarily. Present the object by drawing it and list all the different
ways it can be used to solve the problem. Example, you decide to use a “tin can” to
temporarily solve the problem. List down all possible and creative ways to use the
tin can to solve the problem. Share your output to the rest of the class.

Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum Page | 19

4. Reflect on the following questions:
a. Does your mind map clearly show your ideas and plans on how to address the
community problem?
▪ Well, I think my mind map show the idea on how I can help the
community.

b. Is the object you chose relevant and effective to temporarily solve the problem?
▪ Probably the object that I chose to use in solving the problem in our
community is very much effective. It is because it’s very helpful in
removing the things that cause the drainage to not flow properly.

c. Do you think your proposed solution to the problem is feasible and realistic?
Would you be willing to present this proposal to the head of your community?
Why or why not?
▪ Well for me my idea is useful and can really be possible but I guess I will
not propose it to the head of the community because they might not
consider it as a useful tool because it is just a very simple tool.

d. How did you come up with your ideas and output?

▪ My idea was based in my own experience in cleaning the drainage of our
restroom. I just thought that it may help to clean the drainage of the
community because as of now that is really the problem.
