Exercise 13 Restraining Methods For Domestic Ruminants

This document discusses restraining methods for domestic ruminants like cattle and small ruminants. It provides questions for students to research different types of restraint, the importance of understanding an animal's flight zone, and techniques for casting down cattle. Diagrams and descriptions are provided for various restraint procedures and techniques for large and small ruminants, including nose leads, head restraints, ear twitches, milking hopples, leg restraints, tail restraints, and methods for calves, heifers, casting, and restraining sheep and goats. Chemical restraint options for ruminants are also mentioned.

Exercise 13

Restraining Methods for Domestic Ruminants

Although beef and dairy cattle are both bovine species, their temperament and personality
are quite different. Dairy cattle tend to be more docile as they are used to being handled, whereas
beef cattle are raised on pasture and have minimal handling. Different breeds can also vary in
regards to the amount of restraint needed. The size of cattle brings a higher level of safety
concerns. Their heavy weight and size can easily crush a body of the handler, and they can butt
with their large heads. Veterinarians should always take great care to not place themselves
between the animal and an object to prevent crushing.

I. Objective:
The students should be able to know and understand the different restraining
techniques used in handling domestic ruminants

II. Questions for Research:

1. In your own understanding, what is the importance of restraining ruminants?

2. Enumerate the different types of restraint. Describe each
