Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian chronicler and eyewitness on Ferdinand Magellan's 1519-1522 voyage, the first circumnavigation of the globe. Pigafetta wrote an account of the voyage upon his return to Europe in 1525, published posthumously in the 1550s. His report detailed key events of the journey, including a battle on the island of Mactan in which the local leader Lapu-Lapu defeated Magellan's forces, resulting in Magellan's death.
