Answer Key To Assignment 1

This document contains the solutions to 3 assignment problems involving fluid flow calculations. Problem 1 calculates the total energy of water flowing at 0.15 m^3/s through a 0.25 m^2 pipe located 2.75 m above the datum. Problem 2 determines the specific gravity of a fluid with a total head of 1.85 m, velocity of 0.66 m/s, and pressure of 90 kPa. Problem 3 finds the flow rate of a fluid moving at 0.77 m/s through a pipe with a cross-sectional area of 0.405 m^2.

Answer Key: Assignment # 1

1. If the flow rate of water is 0.15m^3/s and the cross-sectional area of the conduit
is 0.25 m^2, it was recorded that the pressure is 4 kPa. The center of the pipe is
located 2.75 m above the datum line. Determine the total energy in meters.
Given:
Q = 0.15m^3/s
A = 0.25 m^2
p = 4 kPa
z = 2.75 m
Solution:
𝑄 = 𝐴𝑣
0.15 = 0.25𝑣
𝑣 = 0.6 𝑚/𝑠
𝑇𝐸 = ℎ𝑧 + ℎ𝑝 + ℎ𝑣

4 0.62
𝑇𝐸 = 2.75 + +
9.81 2(9.81)
𝑻𝑬 = 𝟑. 𝟏𝟖 𝒎

2. Determine the specific gravity of the fluid if the total head is 1.85 m. The fluid
flows with a velocity of 0.66 m/s and a pressure of 90 kPa. The center of the pipe
in the datum line.(The last sentence is wrong grammar but if you will take it as is)
Given:
hz = 0 m (The datum line lies on the datum line base on the phrase “in the
datum line”
p = 90 kPa
TH (total head) = 1.85
v = 0.66 m/s
Solution:

𝑇𝐻 = ℎ𝑧 + ℎ𝑝 + ℎ𝑣
90 0.662
1.85 = + +0
𝑠𝑔 (9.81) 2(9.81)
𝒔𝒈 = 𝟓. 𝟎𝟐

3. What is the flow rate in m^3/s if the cross-section of a pipe has a dimension of
450 mm X 900 mm and the fluid flows with a velocity of 0.77 m/s?
Given:
A = 0.45(0.9) = 0.405 m^2
v = 0.77 m/s
Solution:
𝑄 = 𝐴𝑣
𝑄 = 0.405 (0.77)
𝑸 = 𝟎. 𝟑𝟏𝟐 𝒎𝟑 /𝒔
