Stylistics is the study of style in language through the analysis of distinctive linguistic expressions and their intended purpose and effect. It examines language use in context by looking at choices in vocabulary, grammar, figurative devices, and other linguistic features that represent a particular perspective. Stylistics is interested in language functioning within texts and how unconscious and conscious choices in expression create different styles for different effects based on the context in which language is used.

What is Stylistics?

▪It is the study of style in language –the

analysis of distinctive linguistic
expression and the description of its
purpose and effect.
Stylistics
It is a method of textual interpretation
in which primacy of place is assigned to
language.
▪Stylistics was recognized as a branch of
General Linguistics in the 1950s.

▪It studies various functional styles

and expressive means and devices of
the language.
Stylistics is interested in language as a
function of texts in context, and it
acknowledges that utterances (literary
or otherwise) are produced in a time, a
place, and in a cultural and cognitive
context.
❑ The concept of style involves choice – different
choices will provide different styles and different
effects.
❑It is concerned with the possible significance of
linguistic features in texts and how they can be
interpreted as representing a situation or event
from a particular point of view or perspective.
❑Unconscious and conscious choices of
expression that create a particular style
are always motivated, induced or
inspired by contextual circumstances in
which writers are involved in various
ways.
Stylistics deals with:

▪the aesthetic function of the language;

▪ expressive means of the language;
▪ synonymous ways of rendering one and the same
idea;
▪ emotional coloring in the language;
Stylistics deals with:

▪ a system of devices called stylistic devices;

▪ the splitting of the literary language into separate
systems called style;
▪ the interrelation between language and thought;
▪ the individual manner of an author in making use of
the language.
Why is Language Important
to Stylistics

The various forms, patterns and

levels that constitute linguistic
structure are an important index of
the function of the text.
Purpose Of Stylistics

•To explore creativity in language use

Note: Interest in language is always at the fore in

stylistic analysis which is why you should never
undertake to do stylistics unless you are interested
in language.
