Fostering children’s independence and

autonomy

Independence comes from security as well as freedom.

Parents try to train independence among children by leaving
them in a room by themselves for long periods, even though
they are crying for company.

Reasons why childhood id the ideal stage to learn skills:

 Young children love and enjoy doing activities over and
over again until they master these activities very well.
 Young children love adventure; they often do things
without considering the affects whether these will hurt
them or they become the object of unkind laugher by
other children.
 Young children learn easily because of their desire to
learn new skills since they have a body that can bend
easily without breaking.

In spite of variations, all young children learn certain common

kills, though the times they learn may somewhat vary and the
proficiency with which they learn them may be different. These
common skills can be divided into two major categories:

1. Hand skills
