Colin Kaepernick

I decided to choose Colin Kaepernick as my modern-day Antigone. I believe he


is a modern-day Antigone because he stood for what he believed in and was punished
for doing so. During the National Anthem in an American football game, he took a
knee along with a few teammates. He said he did it to protest against police brutality
on African-Americans. Fans booed him for his protest, and the NFL eventually fired
him. He also stated that he wouldn’t stand for the flag if he was hired again. His story
is similar to Antigone’s because they both fought for what they believed in and faced
the consequences for it. So, Colin Kaepernick is a modern-day Antigone.

Colin Kaepernick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1987. He attended the


Univerity of Nevada, Reno, and set many school and college records. He was drafted
to the San Franciso 49ers in 2011, and he led the team to the Super Bowl XLVII two
years later. In 2016, during the National Anthem, he refused to stand. He said in an
interview, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that
oppresses black people and people of color.” He was booed by fans after that, and his
protest caused a lot of controversy. At the end of the football season, he was fired
from the NFL.

Some of Kaepernick’s strongest beliefs is that he would not participate in the


National Anthem until something is done about the police brutality that African-
Americans are facing. He also would not show pride to a country that oppresses
certain ethnic groups because that is not what this country stands for. When he was
fired from the NFL, he filed a grievance against them since they fired him because,
allegedly, the NFL owners colluded to keep him out of the games. He pledged to
donate one million dollars to organizations working in oppressed communities. He also
got a lot of support, and hate, for his actions during the National Anthem.

I think Kaepernick is a modern-day Antigone because they both have similar


stories. They both protested against injustice, and were punished for it. Antigone
believed that outlawing the burial of her brother, Polyneices, was unjust and buried
him anyway, and she was killed for doing so. Kaepernick kneeled down during the
National Anthem at one of his football games, which led to a lot of backlash and
support from fans, celebrities, politicians, and others; he was later kicked from the
NFL once the season was over. Both Antigone and Kaepernick paid a price for standing
up for what they believed in, one with the death and the other with unemployment.
Because Kaepernick and Antigone have comparable stories, I believe Kaepernick is a
modern-day Antigone.
