Engineers in Papua New Guinea have developed a process to turn waste betel nut fibers into useful mattresses. [1] The fibers are collected from markets and streets where they are commonly discarded as waste. [2] The fibers are then washed, dried, and separated from their outer coverings. [3] The cleaned fibers are woven together and coated with chemicals to prevent rotting. [4] The woven fibers are layered and tied together to form a rectangular mattress shape. [5] By turning waste into a useful product, this process helps reduce environmental waste while providing local mattresses to benefit the economy.

ENGINEERING WASTE MATERIALS INTO USEFUL PRODUCT: MAKING MATRESS FROM THE WASTE

BETULNUT FIBERS

THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Basic pictorial information

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Introduction

Betelnut fiber is a fiber that is taken from the nut by unveiling

its skin. This fiber is seen everywhere around our societies
as a waste where it is making the environment look untidy. Fig.1.Harvest & selling nut Fig.2. Collection of nut skin
However, we as being an engineers should not go to the
perspective of ordinary people by saying its truly waste but
could say it can be made into useful products like this poster
will explain one of its importance. Thus, this poster in its
limit, we will stress one idea on how to solve this problem
encountered by societies and how it can be useful to the
people. This could be done by making mattress from those
waste betel nut fibers. Fig.3. Separate fiber from skin Fig.4. Ready to use as Mattress
