SERVICE INFO
1. Modification of processor board 6001-746 to prevent the lithium battery for leakage.
What: When the instrument is switched on, a leakage current (Ireverse) coming form clock
circuit IC43 is loading the lithium battery B1. Normally a small leakage current is
allowed for this type of battery.
We have found that on the 6001-746 board, only used in the M200 EMC version,
the Irev is higher than expected. The higher Irev shortens the battery live time and
eventually the battery could start leaking.
To prevent loss of memory and in worst case leaking battery’s we have decided to
develop a battery exchange kit. Please exchange the battery as soon as possible,
do not wait for complaints because it is less work to exchange the battery when it is
not leaking.
This kit contains a clear description how to exchange the battery and how to modify
the board in such a way that the Irev. of the battery becomes low.
Attached you find a drawing where the changes are marked. The dotted line must
be cut and pin 1 and 4 of IC43 must be connected to VccB, pin 1 IC 55.
When: From week 14 on we will start sending a battery exchange kit 6002-077 to each
country. In the end you receive a battery exchange kit for each M200 EMC
instrument mentioned in the attached table.
More: In addition to the above mentioned modification we have added in the battery
exchange kit two capacitors of 100nF, C96 and C97. We have added them as an
extra stabilisation of the VccB. In the attached drawing the new capacitors are
marked with circles.
Note 1: In some cases the processor boards could be damaged in such a way that repair is
not possible. In those cases we advice you to return the 6001-746 board to us so we
can replace it under warranty. To be able to ‘swap’ boards local we will send to each
M200 distributor on forehand some boards. At the end al the used boards must be
returned to VITAL. Boards not returned by July will be invoiced.
Note 2: When removing a leaking battery, we advice you to remove it by cutting the battery
leads and not to de-solder it.
Then clean the board with electroclean to remove the rests of electrolyte.
This must be done in the right order to avoid the electrolyte to be heated by a solder
iron, because when the electrolyte is heated, a loud chemical reaction will break up
the cohesion of the on Mn-based electrolyte, producing i.a. oxygen.
Note 3: Also board 6001-616 (non EMC-version) can be used as a replacement for the
6001-746 board.
Note 4: To prevent system and test parameters to get lost during the modification, we will
supply you with a spare battery with a connector which can be used as a temporary
battery back-up.

What to do:
1. Solder wire pin 4 IC43 to pin 1 IC55
2. Connect back-up battery* pin 2 IC55 to TP4 (Gnd)
*(only when parameters must be saved)
3. Cut trace pin 1 IC43 to VIA
Remove old battery, clean board and mount new battery.
4. Mount capacitor C96 100nF pin 28 IC45 to VIA (Gnd)
5. Mount capacitor C97 100nF pin 1 IC43 to VIA (Gnd)
