MED651 Assignment 2 PDF

This document outlines assignment questions for a solid mechanics course. The assignment contains 6 questions analyzing mechanical structures under various loading conditions using concepts like Mohr's circle, stresses, deflections, and buckling. Students are asked to determine principal stresses and planes, maximum loads, stresses in beams, deflections, and critical buckling loads. The assignment is due on May 20th, 2020 and requires students to apply knowledge of engineering mechanics, materials science, and analysis techniques to solve well-defined engineering problems.

SCHOOL OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING (MECHANICAL)

MED651 SOLID MECHANICS
ASSIGNMENT 2
After completing this assessment, you will be able to:
I. Apply knowledge of engineering mechanics and material science to the structural
analysis of mechanical structures.
II. Identify and analyse well-defined engineering problems reaching substantiated
conclusions using analysis techniques of axial and torsional loaded members, beams
and columns
III. Communicate effectively on well-defined engineering activities with the engineering
community and with society at large, by being able to comprehend the work of others,
document their own work, and give and receive clear instructions.
IV. Systematically checks the analysis for accuracy and validity of assumptions made
Due Date is 20th May, 2020
Question 1
For the given state of stress, determine (a) the principal planes, (b) the principal
stresses.

Question 2
Two members of uniform cross section 50 × 80 mm are glued together along plane a-
a that forms an angle of 25° with the horizontal. Knowing that the allowable stresses
for the glued joint are 𝜎 = 800 kPa and 𝜏 = 600 kPa, determine the largest centric load
P that can be applied. Solve using Mohr’s circle.
Question 3
The state of plane stress shown will occur at a critical point in a pipe made of an
aluminum alloy for which 𝜎𝑈𝑇 = 5 75 MPa and 𝜎𝑈𝐶 =5 150 MPa. Using Mohr’s
criterion, determine the shearing stress 𝜏0 for which failure should be expected.

Question 4
An overhanging W920×449 rolled-steel beam supports a load P as shown. Knowing
that P = 700 kN, a = 2.5 m, and 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙 =100 MPa, determine
(a) the maximum value of the normal stress 𝜎𝑚 in the beam,
(b) the maximum value of the principal stress 𝜎𝑚𝑎𝑥 at the junction of the flange and
web,
(c) whether the specified shape is acceptable as far as these two stresses are concerned.
Question 5
(a) Determine the location and magnitude of the maximum absolute deflection in AB
between A and the center of the beam.

(b) Assuming that beam AB is a W460 × 113, 𝑀𝑂 = 224 KN.m, and E = 200 GPa,
determine the maximum allowable length L of the beam if the maximum deflection
is not to exceed 1.2 mm.

Question 6
A compression member of 1.5-m effective length consists of a solid 30-mm diameter
brass rod. In order to reduce the weight of the member by 25%, the solid rod is
replaced by a hollow rod of the cross section shown. Determine:
(a) the percent reduction in the critical load,

(b) the value of the critical load for the hollow rod. Use E = 200 GPa.
