The sandwich filters are used to protect the pro-
portional valves on the multiway valves FIVA,
ELFI, ELVA the hydraulic pumps, Alpha lubrica-
tors MK2 and ME-B HPS accumulator block.
Furthermore the sandwich filters are used during
flushing of GI-components.

1. Introduction
A number of particles from the piping system can be released when the engine is started. They
are gradually removed by the ME filter and the purifiers.

The sandwich filters are introduced in order to protect the proportional valves on the multiway
valves FIVA, ELFI, ELVA, the hydraulic pumps, Alpha lubricators MK2 and ME-B HPS accumulator
block. The sandwich filters prevent harmful particles to enter the proportional valves.

Furthermore the sandwich filters are to be used during flushing of GI-components on the ME-GI
engines. The filters are to be installed between the ELWI and the gas block.

2. Sandwich filters on test bed and seatrial - ME-engines

The sandwich filters are to be mounted before the engine is started on test bed, and removed
again after sea trial.
After sea trial the inside filter cartridges are to be scrapped and the sandwich filter kits are to be
returned to the engine builder.

3. Sandwich filter used during flushing - ME-GI engines only

The sandwich filters must be installed between the ELWI and the gasblock before flushing of the
ME-system.
When the flushing is completed the sandwich filters must be removed again because the ELWI
can not operate properly due to too high pressure drop through the filter.
Note! Sandwich filters are only needed between the ELWI and the gasblock, and not be-
tween the ELGI and the gasblock. The reason is that the hydraulic oil have its inlet
through the ELWI before it continues its flow to the ELGI.

5. Examples of use

5.1. General installation and removal procedure on test bed and seatrial - ME-engines

Installation procedure (before shop test):

1. Dismount the proportional valve from the component.
2. Remove the four long (M5) screws from the tool and place the four short (M5) screws from
the proportional valve in the tool.
3. Inspect the filter visually and check that the o-rings are intact and in place. Mount the sand-
wich filter. The face with the o-rings must be towards the component.
4. Place the proportional valve on top of the filter. Mount the four long screws.

Removal procedure (after sea trial):

1. Remove the four long M5 screws and place them in the tool instead of the short M5 screws.
2. Dismount the sandwich filter.
3. Check the o-rings on the proportional valve. Mount the proportional valve on the component
using the four short M5 screws.

Use the the long M8 screw with distance pipe from the tool to support the proportional valve.
Mount the M8 screw and the short distance pipe from the proportional valve in the tool during use
of the sandwich filter.

Remove the cover over the proportional valve on the mechanically driven pump when installation
procedure is to be done.
Mount the cover over the proportional valve again after use of the sandwich filter.

5.6. Installation and removal procedure on Gasblock (ME-GI engines)

Installation procedure (before flushing)

1. Dismount the ELWI from the gasblock.
2. Dismount the accumulator from the adaptor block and mount plug from the tool
3. Remove the four long (M6) screws from the tool. Mount the four short (M6) screws in the tool.
4. Inspect the filter visually and check that the o-rings are intact and in place. The surface with
the o-rings on the filter must be towards the gasblock/adaptor.
5. Place the adaptor between gasblock and filter to avoid interference. Surface with o-rings
against gasblock.
6. Place the proportional valve on top of the filter.
7. Mount the long (M6) screws.

Removal procedure (when flushing is completed)

1. Remove the short (M6) screws from the tool. Remove the proportional valve, the filter and
the adapter.
2. Mount the long (M6) screws in the tool.
3. Check the o-rings on the proportional valve. Mount the proportional valve on the gasblock
using the short (M6) screws.
