PRACTICAL
BOOKLET
2020-2021
You will be be shown how to use practical equipment when it is first met, through a demonstration by
the teacher or technician.
Good quality videos of many techniques are available online which could be used to complement such a
demonstration, these will be placed on Moodle/One note by your course teacher.
You will also be expected to carry out a risk assessment for each laboratory session, you are encouraged
to do this before each laboratory session.
1. Look at each lab beforehand and demonstrate evidence that you have researched the
laboratory practical in question.
2. How you will safely dispose of materials at the end of the laboratory session.
In many of the activities you will be asked to follow written instructions and will be provided the
aim of the experiment as to be clear on what we expect you to learn from the activity. You would
be expected to read through all instructions however basic they may appear before a laboratory
session is held.

Experiment 1: Making up a volumetric solution and carrying out a simple acid-base titration
Use a volumetric flask, burette and pipette as they are intended to be used
During a titration, it is expected that you will record both initial and final burette readings
from which a titre is calculated by difference.
It is usual practice to record titration results in a table of the type shown below.
