Heating cycle:
The heating cycle of the pump works by taking heat in outside air, warming it up further and use
the warm air to heat the indoor air.
Process:
1. Liquid refrigerant absorbs heat in the evaporator which is an outdoor air, and turning it
into a gas.
2. The refrigerant is put through compressor that will raises the pressure of the gas,
increasing its temperature.
3. The hot gas flows through "condenser coils" inside the space to be heated, and since it
is at a higher temperature than this space, it will transfer heat to the room and
condenses back into a liquid.
4. The liquid finally flows back through a valve that reduces its pressure to cool it down so it
can repeat the cycle.
Cooling cycle:
The cooling cycle of a heat pump is used to cool a space by removing heat from it and expelling
it to another area which is usually to the outdoors for air conditioning or to the room for a
refrigerator. The "evaporator" and "condenser coils" will switch roles and the flow of refrigerant
is reversed.
Process:
1. The cold refrigerant absorb heat from the hotter room that is in the evaporator, so the
room will cool down.
2. To increase it temperature, it is then put through the compressor.
3. Then, it passes through the condenser coils, and transfer this heat to the outside air.
4. Lastly, it will the expands in order to decrease its pressure and cool down to below the
room’s temperature to repeat the cycle.
