CE 14 HYDRAULICS

2ND SEMESTER AY 2019-2020

SEMI-FINAL EXAMINATION

INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Answers must be encoded in LMS on May 26. Look for the SEMI-FINAL
EXAMINATION Module under the CE 14 class.
2) You have 1.5 hrs to provide your answers by selecting the best response to multiple
choice questions. Read each question carefully before submitting your answers.
3) When you are satisfied with your encoded answers, click submit.

[Refer to our lecture examples and the given probsets. Good luck!]

Situation 1
A cast-iron pipe (Є =2.6 x 10-4 m) has a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 90 m. A liquid having
a viscosity of 4 x 10-5 m2/s is flowing through the pipe at 3 m/s.
1) Compute the Reynolds number.
2) Compute the friction factor.
3) Compute the head loss in the pipe.

Situation 2
A cast-iron pipe (Є =2.6 x 10-4 m) has a diameter of 25 mm and a length of 90 m. A liquid
having a viscosity of 2.5 x 10-6 m2/s is flowing through the pipe at 3 m/s.
4) Compute the Reynolds number.
5) Compute the friction factor.
6) Compute the head loss in the pipe.

Situation 3
A liquid (s=1.5) is flowing at its lower critical velocity through a 200 mm diameter pipe, 150 m
long. The head loss of the pipe due to friction is 25 m.
7) Compute the friction factor.
8) Compute the critical velocity.
9) Compute the rate of flow.
10) Compute the kinematic viscosity of the liquid.
11) Compute the dynamic viscosity of the liquid.

Situation 4
Given the properties of a long pipe:
L = 610 m n = 0.018 C = 100 f = 0.012 d = 450 mm
The amount of flow in the pipe is 0.175 cubic meters per second.

12) Find the head loss using Darcy-Weisbach

13) Find the head loss using Manning
14) Find the head loss using Hazen-Williams
Situation 5
The loss of head in a 350 mm pipe conveying water is
estimated at 50 cm per meter length. f = 0.035.

15) What is the discharge?

16) What is the velocity of flow?
17) What is the total head loss after 200 m of flow?

Situation 6
Three pipes in A, B and C are in parallel. If the combined discharge of the three pipes is equal
to 0.61 m3/s and assuming the have the same f, compute the following using the data below:

PIpeline Length Diameter

A 600 m 150 mm
B 480 200
C 750 100

18) Rate of flow in pipeline A in liters per second

19) Rate of flow in pipeline B in liters per second
20) Rate of flow in pipeline C in liters per second

Situation 7
Three reservoirs have pipes n = 0.01, that meet at elevation zero. The characteristics of the
pipes are as follows:
PIpes Diameter Length Elev
1 0.2 m 800 m 50 m
2 0.3 1000 60
3 0.15 600 30

21) What is the rate of flow in pipe 1?

22) What is the rate of flow in pipe 2?
23) What is the rate of flow in pipe 3?
24) What is the Head loss in pipe 1?
25) What is the Head loss in pipe 2?
26) What is the Head loss in pipe 3?

Situation 8
The total head loss from A to D in the looping pipe system below is 9 m. Assuming C = 120 in
all pipes, determine the following if 50 liters per second of water enters at A:
27) Head loss in pipe 1
28) Head loss in pipe 2
29) Head loss in pipe 3
30) Head loss in pipe 4
31) Amount of flow in pipe 2
32) Amount of flow in pipe 3
33) Diameter of pipe 3

Situation 9

and assuming C = 100:

34) What is the Head loss in pipe 1?

35) What is the Head loss in pipe 2?
36) What is the Head loss in pipe 3?
37) What is the total head loss?
38) What is the difference in elevation of A and B?
