MOM OU Old Question Paper

This document contains a 17 question exam on Mechanics of Materials. It includes multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer conceptual questions in Part A. Part B contains longer form problems involving calculations of stresses, deflections, shear stresses, critical loads and changes in dimensions for beams, shafts, vessels and columns. The document provides relevant equations, diagrams and material properties to solve the problems.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
B.E. 2/4 (Mech./Prod./AE) I - Semester (Main) Examination, Dec. 2014 / January 2015

Subject: Mechanics of Materials

Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 75

Note: Answer all questions from Part A. Answer any five questions from Part B.
PART – A (25 Marks)

1 Multiple choice: (2)

i) The core of a solid circular section with diameter 80 mm has a diameter.
a) 26.66 mm (b) 10 mm (c) 20 mm (d)13.33 mm
ii) With respect to torsion the shear stress at the C.G. of the shaft is
a) Average shear stress (b) Maximum
c) Zero (d) (4/3) times average shear stress
2 Fill up the blanks: (2)
i) The relation between the three moduli E.C and K is
ii) The shear stress along principal planes is
3 Differentiate between thick and thin cylinders. (2)
4 Mention the advantages of hollow circular shafts over solid circular shafts. (2)
5 The major and minor principal stresses on an inclined section of a bar are 60 MPa and
30 MPa respectively. What is the maximum shear stress at that section? (2)
6 What is meant by ductility of a steel rod? How it is measured by conducting a tension test? (3)
7 Explain the flitened beam with a neat picture. (3)
8 Define flexural rigidity and calculate the same for a hollow circular section of 200 mm
inner diameter and 25 mm thick if E 200 GPa. (3)
9 A cantilever carries a u.d.l. w per unit length over the entire span/and a point load P at
the free end. What is the total deflection at the free end? (3)
10 Write the Rankine’s formula for buckling load of columns along with the notations used
in it. (3)

PART – B (50 Marks)

11 A 14 mm diameter steel rod passes centrally through a copper tube 50 mm external

diameter and 40 mm internal diameter, and 2 m long. The tube is closed at each end by
25 mm thick steel plates which are secured by nuts. The nuts are tightened until the
copper tube is reduced in length by 0.498 mm. The whole assembly is then raised in
temperature by 45oC. Calculate the stresses in copper and steel before and after the
rise of temperature, assuming that the thickness of the plates remains unchanged.
Take ac 16x10-6 per oC, as 12x10-6 per oC, Ec 1.1x105 N/mm2 and Es 2x105 N/mm2. (10)
12 Construct SFD and BMD for the beam shown in Fig. 1. Mark the salient values therein.
Also locate the points of contraflexure, if any. (10)

a span of 6 m. Calculate the deflection for a u.d.l. on it such that the maximum
bending stress induced is 120 MPa. Take E = 200 GPa. (5)

14 (a) Derive the torsion equation for circular shafts. (5)

(b) A solid circular shaft transmits a power of 60 kW at 200 rpm. Find the diameter of
