42-47 Seismic Analysis

The document discusses seismic analysis and calculating seismic loads on a building structure. It provides details on calculating: [1] the total seismic dead load at different building levels, [2] the design base shear using code provided equations, and [3] the lateral seismic forces distributed to each level using the base shear and level weights and heights. The goal is to proportion the structure to withstand earthquake ground motions.

Seismic Analysis

The significance of seismic analysis is to proportion structures to withstand the

displacement and forces included by ground motion, especially in high seismic risk

areas. The safety of a structure subjected to seismic loading rests on the designer’s

understanding of the response of the structure to the ground motion. Design for

earthquakes requires greater sensitivity of earthquake induced forces to the geometry of

the structure. Without careful design, forces and displacements can be concentrated in

portions of a structure that are not capable of providing adequate strength or ductility.
