Transactional leadership is primarily based on processes and control, and requires a
strict management structure. This leadership looks at how to get things done as agreed with the
leaders. The followers also focus on the goals and the leaders use rewards and punishments as
motivation.
York-Barr and Duke (2004) defined teachers’ leadership as a process which teachers
individually or collectively influence their colleagues, principals and other members of the school
communities to improve teaching and learning practices with the aim of increasing pupils’
learning achievement.
The first aspect is passion in teaching and learning. As a leader, teachers are always
practicing their art and learn how to improve their teaching techniques. A strong teacher
leadership will always find out ways on how to cater their students learning styles. For instance,
she/he will watch their peers and learn from their teaching styles. He/she will also ask for their
colleagues to observe and provide feedback on how to reach the students in their classroom.
They will be opened to suggestions and dare to take risks to try new things. A weak teacher
leadership on the other hand is just staying on his comfort zone and do not want to take any
risks. He/she will not look for new ways to cater their pupils need.
Next, a strong teacher leadership have a good collaboration with the others compared to
weak leadership. Teachers know that the best way to be successful is to work with others to
create a quality teaching environment. They will look for those with similar passions and solicit
support from people at all levels within the school system. They maintain the respect from
others for their high quality of teaching standards, and they give recognition to others for their
approaches. They know that they can’t do it all by themselves so the teacher looks for others
with the right skills to help and support. They also don’t take all of the credit for success. They
share it throughout the team with which they work.
Lastly, a good communication and rapport is also important in ensuring a strong teacher
leadership. This is because great teachers are great communicators. They know the best ways
to interact with students, parents, faculty and coworkers. They are skilled at listening and
respect the opinions and ideas of others. Teachers know how to communicate their own ideas
so others will understand. Meanwhile a weak teacher leadership will face problem and difficulty
in interacting with the others and they prefer to work alone.
