Introduction To Linux (Already)

Linux is a free operating system that can function as a desktop or server. It uses a common kernel and there are many different Linux distributions, such as Red Hat, Suse, and Debian. Linux offers features like connecting to networks, working with multimedia, playing games, communicating over the internet, and protecting systems with firewalls. It was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds and is continually developed by software developers worldwide. Linux is used because it is free, requires less hardware power than other systems but offers high performance, supports all networking services, and allows users to access source code. Common features include multi-user access, multitasking, graphical user interfaces, hardware support, and network connectivity.

Chapter I Introduction to Linux Linux System

Introduction to Linux
I. What is Linux?

Linux is a free operating system, which may be a desktop workstation (like

windows 9x) or a Server (Like windows 2000/NT).
There are many different distribution of Linux, but all of them have the same
Kernel.
Kernel: is the core program to operate the Linux system.
Some example of Linux distribution:
 Red Hat
 Suse
 Mandrake
 Debain
 Slackwave
 Etc..

Some feature of RHL

 Connect your computer to a LAN or Internet (WAN)

 Create a documents and publish your work on paper or the Web.
 Work with multimedia content to manipulate images, play music files,
view video, and even burn your own CDs.
 Play games individually or over network.
 Communicate over the Internet using a variety of Web tools for browsing,
chatting, transferring files, participating in newsgroups, and sending and
receiving e-mail.
 Protect your computing resource by having Red Hat Linux act as a
firewall and/ or a router to protect against intruders coming in through
public networks.
 Configure your computer to act as a network server, such as a print server,
Web server, fileserver, mews server, and a database server.

II. History of Linux

 Early 1991 : Linux Torvalds when he was a student (3th year) at the
University of Helsinki. He wrote his own operating system modeled after
MINIX. He, then, posted result freely on the Internet, allowing other
programming around the world to scrutinize his work.
 August 1991 : prototype version (v) 0.01 was released
 October 1991 : Linux version 1.0 was released (has C compiler and
command shells)

Chapter I Introduction to Linux Linux System

 Today, there are hundreds of software developers around the world

contributing software to the Linux effort. Because the source code for the
software is freely available, anyone can work on it, change it, or enhance
it.

III. Why use Linux?

 Price : Linux free

 Power : Linux requires less advanced H.W, but operators with higher
performance.
 Networking : Linux supports all networking services available on other
OS
 Portability : Linux can be installed on different H.W platforms : ix86,
Alpha, ect..
 Source code : Linux programs come with source code.
IV. Common Linux Feature
 Multiuser
 Multitasking
 Graphic User Interface (X Window System)
 Hardware support
 Networking connectivity
 Network severs
 Application support (POSIX and APIs)
