Caliper Training

The document describes the parts and use of a Vernier caliper. It has a main scale and a Vernier scale that allows for more precise measurements than the main scale alone. To take a measurement, the user aligns the "0" marks on the two scales and reads the measurement by looking at where lines on the Vernier scale meet lines on the main scale. Practice problems are provided to demonstrate how to add the whole number and fractional readings to calculate a total measurement in both inches and metric units.

10 Parts of a Vernier Caliper

1.Inside jaws: Internal length measurements are found by using this part.
2.Retainer or locking screw: This part blocks the instrument's movable parts in order to
transfer between measurement methods easily.
3.Vernier scale (inch)
4.Rail (inch)
5.Depth probe: The part used in order to find depth measurements
6.Front end of the rail
7.Main scale (mm)
8.Vernier scale (mm)
9.Sliding Jaws
10.Outside jaws: This part makes measuring external lengths possible.
11.Fixed Jaw

PS. Divisions on the Main Scale are 25 thousand of an inch. (0.025)

Divisions on the Vernier Scales are 1 thousand of an inch. (0.001)
