Ashtaka-varga compiled

Parasara in chapter 66 in his book titled “Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra”

has explained in detail on how to arrive at the ashtakavarga points
being the auspicious and the inauspicious points
for the respective natal charts

The directions explained are to be accepted

Parasara has not explained as to how the parameters have been derived.

The terminology “ashtaka-varga”

Uses the same word “vargas”
When we studied the Varga Charts or the divisional charts.
The varga charts are derived after the Sign of 30 degrees are divided
But that is not the case we study the ashtaka-varga
Here the word varga does not refer to any division whatsoever
Varga herein simply refers to ‘parts’ or ‘components’

Ashtaka means 8
As in the Ashtami tithi meaning the 8 th tithi or the lunar day
Also used to describe ashtama- laksmi meaning 8 forms of the Goddess Lakshmi

And varga herein means parts or components

As we study deeper we would understand this better

Ashtakavarga is a system explained by Parasara

Using counting to identify which of the 12 zodiac signs
Are inauspicious and which are auspicious for each of the planets
For each respective natal chart

In Vedic astrology there are 9 planets

And the ascendant in each natal chart
But for purposes of the Ashtakavarga
Only 7 planets and the ascendant are used
Hence the 8 parts or components
Rahu and Ketu have been excluded

The following natal chart would be used

To practice and understand the principles of Ashtakavarga
As we familiarise ourselves with the various components

But as mentioned above the planets Rahu and Ketu would be excluded

For each of the 7 planets

The inauspicious and auspicious signs
Are to be ascertained
Counted from where the natal planets are placed

Inauspicious signs ‘Karana’ ( करण ) ‘dots’ or ‘bindus’

Auspicious signs ‘Sthan’ ( स्थान ) ‘small vertical lines’ or ‘rekhas’

The inauspicious signs, places or houses are referred to as ‘Karana’ ( करण )

And these signs, places or houses are to be marked with ‘dots’ or ‘bindus’ in sanskrit

The auspicious signs, places or houses are referred to as ‘Sthan’ ( स्थान )

And these signs, places or houses are to be marked with ‘small vertical lines’ or ‘rekhas’ in sanskrit

The above has been explained in verses 13 to 15 as follows:

13-15. As the effects of the twelve Bhavas are judged from Lagn and Candr, effects of the twelve Bhavas and the
various Grahas are judged in the same manner. Therefore the inauspicious places from the seven Grahas, named, as
Karan, beginning from Sūrya and Lagn (total 8), should be marked by dots (Bindus) and auspicious places, named,
as Sthan, by small vertical lines (Rekhas) and on the basis of their assessment should the judgment of the horoscope
and predictions be made.”

Note:
The above arrangement is known, as Ashtakavarga.
The meaning of Ashtakavarga is literally the group of eight things.
In other words it is the combination of the good and bad positions of a Graha with reference to the seven Grahas
and Lagn. So it is the combination of the benefic and malefic marks (the Rekhas and the Bindus) in a planet’s chart
with reference to the position of the eight Grahas (here Lagn is to be treated, as a Grah).

So we shall start with the planet Sun

Sun Bhinna Ashtaka-Varga (BAV)

Parasara’s explanation of the Inauspicious positions for Sun

Parasara in chapter 66, verses 16, 17 to 19

Explains the Inauspicious positions for Sun as follows:
Verse 16:
Five Grahas in 1st, 2nd, 8th, 3rd and the 12th Bhavas
from Sūrya are Karanprad (dot significators) - Inauspicious positions.

Similarly four Grahas in the 7th and 4th,

three Grahas in the 6th and 9th,
six Grahas in the 5th,
2 Grahas in the 10th
and one Graha in the 11th
are dot significators.

Note:
Parasara did not mention where the Natal Sun is placed
Merely gave the positions from the Natal Sun
So when we plot these positions
We have to plot from where the Sun is placed in our Natal Chart

Verses 17-19:
Thus Lagn, Candr, Guru, Śukr and Budh in the 1st, 2nd and 8th (from Sūrya – this phrase creates the confusion);
Sūrya, Mangal, Śani, Candr and Guru in the 12th;
Budh, Candr, Śukr, Guru in the 4th;
Lagn, Candr, Śukr in the 9th;
Sūrya, Śani and Mangal in the 6th;
Lagn, Budh, Guru and Candr in the 7th;
Śukr in the 11th;
Sūrya, Śani, Śukr, Guru and Mangal in the 3rd;
Guru and Śukr in the 10th;
Sūrya, Śani, Candr, Lagn Mangal and Śukr in the 5th
