Activity No. 2 Integrals Yielding Inverse Trigonometric Functions

This document provides an overview of integrals that yield inverse trigonometric functions. It presents two theorems that give formulas for indefinite integrals of functions in the form of 1/√(1-u^2), 1/(1+u^2), and 1/u√(u^2-1). Examples are also given to demonstrate how to use these formulas to evaluate integrals. The document concludes with an activity that asks students to evaluate six integrals using these methods and explain their work and understanding. It provides rubrics for grading that focus on obtaining the correct answer, providing a clear and creative explanation, and demonstrating knowledge of the concepts and processes involved.

Online Class Module 2:

INTEGRALS YIELDING INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

From the formulas for the derivatives of the inverse trigonometric functions we obtain some indefinite
integral formulas. The following theorem gives three of them.
Theorem 5.8.1:
du
∫ 2
=sin −1 u+C ①
√ 1−u
du
∫ 1+u2 =tan−1 u+C ②

du
∫ 2
=sec −1 u+C ③
u √ u −1

Theorem 5.8.2
du u
∫ =sin−1 +C ①
2
√ a −u a 2

−1
∫ a2 +u2 = a tan ua + C
du 1

−1
du 1 u
∫ = sec +C ③
u √u −a a a
2 2

Example:
dx

√ 4−9 x 2
From the given example, we can easily observed that it qualifies to theorem 5.8.2 eq. ①

du u
∫ =sin−1 +C
2
√ a −u a 2

Where, a=2, u=3 x , and d u=3 dx

So,

dx 1 d (3 x ) 1 −1 3 x
∫ =¿ = sin +C ¿
√ 4−9 x 3 √ 22−( 3 x ) 3
2 2 2

Instruction:
Evaluate the following using the methods for integrals yielding inverse trigonometric functions. Show
your solution and in your own words explain clearly your answer (in bullet/paragraph form). You will
be graded based on the rubrics below.
Rubrics: (*for each item)
*Correct answer-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------20%
*Creativity/uniqueness of the explanation----------------------------------------------------------------------40%
(clear and appropriate, with explanations of significant elements.
Clearly explains connections among mathematical representations.)

*Demonstrated Knowledge-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------40%
(shows substantial understanding of the method
concept, processes, & mathematical ideas)
