Expt. No.: 7
STEADY COMPRESSIBLE FLOW IN A 17BEM0142
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Air flowing at high-speed through a convergent-divergent nozzle having a circular cross-
sectional area, A, that varies with axial distance from the throat, x, according to the formula,
A = 0.5 + x²; -0.5 < x < 0.5
The stagnation pressure (po) and static gauge pressure (p) at the inlet is 101,325 Pa and 99,300
pa. The stagnation temperature To at the inlet is 300 K. The static pressure p at the exit is 3,750
Pa. Calculate the Mach number, pressure and temperature distribution in the nozzle. The
Reynolds number for this high-speed flow is large. Consider the flow as inviscid.

PROCEDURE:
➢ Open excel office and create the coordinates for the 3d curve using the given equation of
the nozzle A = 0.5 + x²; -0.5 < x < 0.5
➢ Copy the coordinates into a note pad in the specified format and import that file into
Design Modular.
➢ Design Modular imports the file and generates the curve .
➢ Create a surface using the curve and suppress the curve .
➢ Create named selections Inlet , Outlet , Axis , Top wall .
➢ Open meshing modular and use mapped face meshing with specified element size .
➢ Set element size to 400 by 200 and update mesh .
➢ In Setup, Models: Enable Energy equation and viscous flow as k-omega and SST
Set the density of fluid as that of ideal gas.
➢ Set the above boundary conditions to the edges.
➢ Solve by Second Order Upwind Scheme for 600 iterations.
➢ Produce the contours for Static Pressure, Mach Number, Temperature and Density
➢ Also plot the graphs for Pressure vs Position, Mach Number vs Position
