1 Description
1.1 General description
The fin stabilizing system type S is used for damping the rolling motion of the ship at sea.

1.1.1 Principle of stabilization

The motion around the longitudinal axis, i.e. rolling of the ship, can be fought in the easiest way,
since the moments required for this can be generated with a reasonable effort.
The moments required for stabilization around the transverse axis of the ship are so big that they
cannot be economically generated according to the knowledge gained up today.
The forces which stimulate a ship at sea to roll are shown in Fig. 1-1. In calm sea, the centre of
buoyancy F (centre of submerged ship’s volume) is located vertically below the centre of gravity
S of the ship, so that the buoyancy and weight are in a common line of action. Due to the wave
motion a wave slope ψ acting on the ship will result. The centre of buoyancy F moves by the
distance a to F', so that an interference moment of the amount MS = A' x a results. The amount
of this interference moment increases with the effective wave slope ψ and tries to turn the ship
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

into the position shown by the dashed line.

In order to minimize this turn, the interference moment MS must be counteracted by a
corresponding stabilizing moment MST as quickly as possible.
This stabilizing moment MST is generated by the fin stabilizing system i.e. by the fins which are
located at the level of the bilge line and the angle of attack of which is adjusted with respect to
the flow of water. For this, the direction of adjustment between the starboard and port fin is
opposed.
In accordance with the hydrofoil principle, the fins apply a buoyancy force directed upward or
downward (fin force P) to the ship’s hull depending on the angle of attack (flow angle α).
The amount of fin force P is directly dependent on the effective fin area, the square flow speed v
and the flow angle α.
A continuous change in the fin force P corresponding to the roll can be achieved by adjusting the
angle of attack (flow angle α). The angle of attack of the two fins is controlled by the stabilizer
control which continuously measures the roll angle ϕ. That is to say, both fins adjusted in an
opposing manner cause a pair of forces transverse to the ship’s longitudinal axis, thus producing
the stabilizing moment MST = 2 x P x L opposed to the interfering moment MS.

1.1.3 Fin unit with fin box

Each fin unit is a self-contained system independent of the other fin unit. Only for the electric
supply and for the electronic control, parallel supplies exist i.e. in case of failure of one fin unit
the other fin unit can be further operated (compare with Fig. 1-3).
As shown in Fig. 1-4, the retractable and extendable fin (7) is connected to the fin shaft and can
be rotated in the crux (4). The effective area of the fin (7) is increased by the tail flap (8) rotated
by a lever.
The fin shaft with the attached rotary vane motor (9) is pivoted in the crux (4) which is supported
in two crux bearings (3 and 5) in the fin box (1) and which can be rotated by 90°.
During stabilizing, the crux (4) transmits the forces occurring at the fin to the fin box (1) via the
crux bearings (3 and 5). The fin box is welded into the ship’s structure and is provided with a
shell opening (6) for retraction and extension of the fin (7). Retraction and extension of the fin (7)
is accomplished by the housing and extending cylinder (2).
During retraction and extension the crux bearings (3 and 5) are supplied with lubricating oil by
the lubricating unit. The lubricating unit is automatically switched on when the stabilizing system
is switched on, and it is automatically switched off when the stabilizing system is switched off.
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

Sealing of the crux and the drive system against the outboard side is accomplished by means of
sealing systems.
An elevated header tank takes up hydraulic oil of the rotary vane motor. Due to the static height
of the header tank the oil filling in the crux and in the main sealing (10) is pressurized. Thus,
additional sealing and lubrication is attained.
Basically, the hydraulic power unit of the fin unit consists of the oil tank, oil cooling unit, valve
group, hydraulic fin control unit and pump units as well as the required fittings. The electrical
power supply is accomplished by means of an own fin control cabinet.
The hydraulic power unit comprises a main pump and an emergency pump.
The main pump serves to supply the fin unit with the required pressure oil.
In case of failure of the main pump or ship’s main electrical power supply the fin can be manually
centered and moved by means of the emergency pump unit. If the ship’s main electrical power
supply fails, the emergency pump unit is operated with emergency power from the emergency
electrical power supply.

1.1.4 Principle of operation, electro hydraulic

The fins are in the fin box when the sea is calm. In order to stabilize, they must first of all be
extended to operating position. In this case, two fin motions must basically be distinguished:
1. Fin extension and retraction (before and after stabilization)
2. Fin positioning during stabilization

The fin stabilizing system can be switched on and off at the control panel bridge and fin control
cabinet. Switching on stabilization and switching off take place automatically after operation of
the respective push button.

Switching on (Fig. A-3)

− The lubricating unit for supply of the crux bearings and the main pump (4) are
switched on.
− The level switch (15), oil thermometer and temperature switch (20) and the
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

level switch of the lubricating unit are operable.

− The pressure relief valve (14) is open to allow pressure-relieved starting of the
motor of the main pump (4).
The pressure relief valve (14) is closed after approximately 4 s and the main pump (4)
generates the required oil pressure. The hydraulic accumulator (19) is charged. The
required oil pressure is applied to the directional valves (23, 32, 265 and 27) of the valve
group 1 (3), to the directional valves (32E, 265E and 27E) of the valve group 2 (3E) and
to the hydraulic fin control unit (2).
After a further 10s
− The control of the pressure switch (38), return line filter (11) and (267) and
pressure filter (266) is switched on.
− The stabilizer control is activated.
− The fin housing command is issued, the directional valve (27) receives a
voltage at its respective coil and retracts the fin until the limit switch "Housed"
switches.

Note!
The fins are automatically retracted and centered prior to extension. This measure is necessary
because:
a) The openings of the fin boxes (shell opening) have been kept very small.
b) During switching off, the fins are lowered to the floor of the fin box and
additionally protected there against sliding out by a stopper.

Revision 00
- Fin Stabilizer
General description Page 1-8

During retraction, the main pump (4) delivers hydraulic oil to the housing and extending
cylinder (30) via the directional valve (27), check valve (31) and throttle check valve (26).
The housing and extending cylinder (30) retracts the fin until the limit switch "Housed" de-
energizes the directional valve (27) via stabilizer control. The hydraulic fin control unit (2) then
receives zero signal and the fin is moved to zero position, i.e. the rotary vane motor (29) swivels
(centers) the fin.
After centering (zero position), pressure oil is fed to the housing and extending cylinder (30) via
the directional valve (27) and check valve plate (31). The fin is extended until the limit switch
"Extended" switches. Now directional valve (265) opens, oil flows via channel B3 to the locking
cylinder (294) and the fin is mechanically locked in the extended position.
The position of the locking piston is monitored by the limit switches (295, unlocked) and
(296, locked).
The directional valve (27) remains energized and the pressure is thus still applied in the housing
and extending cylinder (30).
The monitoring of the maximum fin angles is activated. The proportional control valve of the
hydraulic fin control unit (2) is controlled by the stabilizer control.
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

Stabilization begins.

Note!
During extension, the fin zero position is checked by the stabilizer control using the signal of the
fin angle transmitter. In the event of a deviation of > ± 3° from zero position, extension is stopped
and the fin is centered via the directional valve (32).
Extension is continued after centering.

After extension, the fins briefly receive a zero signal and stabilization begins at a fin angle < ± 3°.
The corresponding side of the stabilizer does not start stabilization if the fin angle is > ± 3°.

Stabilization
The control unit of the stabilizer (electrically/electronically part) works with the following data:
− roll angle acceleration ϕ°°,
− roll angle velocity ϕ°,
− roll angle ϕ and the
− ship’s speed V.

Further information about electric/electronic control see Technical Manual Part B (Electrical
Part).

Revision 00
- Fin Stabilizer
General description Page 1-9

Switching off
1. After operation of the push button "STOP", the fin is moved to zero position by the
proportional control valve of the hydraulic fin control unit (2). A voltage is then
applied to the directional valve (265), oil flows via channel A3 to the locking cylinder
(294) until the switch (295) is activated, the fin is unlocked. Now directional valve
(265) is de-energized and a voltage is applied to the directional valve (27). The main
pump (4) feeds to the housing and extending cylinder (30) via the directional valve
(27) and check valve plate (31), and the fin is then retracted. The fin zero position is
monitored in the same way as during switching on, i.e. if > ± 3° from zero position is
exceeded, retraction is interrupted and the fin is centered. Retraction is terminated
when the "Housed" limit switch switches.
Switching of the "Housed" limit switch results in the following:
− The directional valve (27) is de-energized and assumes zero setting, and the
fin is locked hydraulically.
− The directional valve (23), fin lowering, is energized. Pressure oil is routed to the
rotary vane motor (29) and the fin is lowered to the floor of the fin box.
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

2. After approx. 3 to 4 sec.

− the pressure relief valve (14) is switched on to make the bladder accumulator
(19) pressure less.
− the main pump motor,
− the automatic control section,
− the pressure switch (38) and
− the alarm of return line filter (11) and (267) and
− the alarm of pressure filter (266)
are switched off.

− The level switch (15)

− the thermometer and temperature switch (20) and
− the oil level monitoring alarm, level switch (Fig.1-9/3) of the lubricating unit
remain activated.

3. After a further period of approx. 10 sec.

− the directional valve, fin lowering (23) and
− the pressure relief valve (14) is de-energized.

Switching off is terminated.

1.3 Description

1.3.1 Fin unit

As already mentioned in section 1.1.3, each fin unit basically consists of the following
components:
− Fin box (A-1/42)
− Crux (A-1/4) with fin shaft (A-1/27), main sealing (A-1/33) and main
bearing (A-1/15).
− Housing and extending cylinder (A-1/22)
− Fin (A-1/29) with tail flap (A-1/31)
− Rotary vane motor (A-1/14)
− Lubricating unit (A-2/501)
− Header tank (Fig. 1-11)
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

− Hydraulic power unit (A-2/5)

− Valve group 1 (A-2/302) and hydraulic fin control unit (A-2/15)
− Valve group 2 (A-2/352)
− Locking cylinder (A-2/294)

The fin boxes (A-1/42) are welded into the ship’s structure on the port and starboard sides.
There is an opening in the shell plating of the hull wall through which the fin is retracted and/or
extended.
The crux (A-1/4) is supported in the fin box in crux bearings (A-1/1 and 7), and it rotates by 90°.
The swivel movement is accomplished hydraulically by means of the housing and extending
cylinder (A-1/22), and is controlled and monitored by limit switches (A-1/35 and 37).
When retracted, the crux is hydraulically locked by means of the locking cylinder (A-2/294) and
mechanically secured by lowering of the fin behind of the mechanical stop.
The fin shaft (A-1/27) is pivoted in the crux (A-1/4) in two plain bearings. A fin shaft liner (A-1/26)
provided on the fin shaft (A-1/27) and a main bearing bushing (A-1/28) serve as friction bearing
for the fin shaft (A-1/27) and fin (A-1/29).
Another bearing for fin shaft (A-1/27) and rotary vane motor (A-1/14) is formed by the bushing
(A-1/44) and fin shaft liner (A-1/45).
The fin (A-1/29) is connected to the fin shaft (A-1/27) by a straight pin (A-1/51) and can be
rotated by ± 22° (mechanical stop).
The movable tail flap (A-1/31) is supported in tail flap bearings (A-1/30) and located on the fin
(A-1/29). If the fin is rotated ± 18°, the tail flap will be rotated by ± 29° with respect to the fin axis
by a tail flap drive (A-1/34), thus increasing the effective area. (see Fig. 1-8)

Description Page 1-22

The rotary vane motor (A-1/14) serves as driving unit for the fin (A-1/29) and consists of rotary
vane hub (A-1/46), rotary vane housing (A-1/18) and rotary vane cover ring (A-1/19). The rotary
vane hub transmits the rotating motion via splined hub on to the fin shaft (A-1/27).
The hydraulic power unit (A-2/5) supplies oil under pressure via pipes and hose assemblies to
the rotary vane motor.
The crux bearings (A-1/1/7) are supplied with lubricating oil by the lubricating unit (Fig. 1-9).
The electric pulses for retracting and extending, locking and unlocking as well as centering of the
fin are converted into hydraulic signals by the valve group 1 (A-2/302).
The hydraulic fin control unit (A-2/15) converts the electrical signals of the stabilizer control into
hydraulic signals. For further details see section 1.3.2.2.
The fin angle (angle of attack) is transmitted via control shaft (A-1/50) with sensor part (A-1/47)
from the fin to the fin angle transmitter (A-1/9).
The fin angle transmitter (A-1/9) monitors and controls centering of the fin during retraction and
extension. During stabilization, the fin angle transmitter transmits the actual value of the fin angle
to the stabilizer control for nominal/actual value comparison. In addition, the fin angle transmitter
serves for monitoring the maximum angle of attack. (see also Technical Manual Part B -

1.3.1.1 Crux with seal and bearing

The crux (A-1/4) supports the rotary vane motor (A-1/14) and the fin shaft (A-1/27) with the fin
(A-1/29). It is supported in the crux bearings (A-1/1 and A-1/7) and rotates by 90°.
The crux bearings (A-1/1 and A1/7) transmit the radial forces of the fin to the ship. The crux
bearing, top, (A-1/7) additionally takes up the axial forces of the crux, which are transmitted by
the thrust ring (A-1/8).
Within the area of the crux bearings the crux is provided with protective liners (A-1/2 and A1/6).
The crux bearings are supplied with lubricating oil via lubricating bores by the lubricating unit
(Fig. 1-9).
The crux bearings (A-1/1 and A1/7) are sealed against the outboard pressure by means of shaft
sealing rings (A-1/3 and A1/5).

Bearing, sealing and lubrication:

Main bearing (A-1/15)

4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The main bearing (A-1/15) transmits the major radial bearing forces to the crux (A-
1/4) via fin shaft liner (A-1/26) and main bearing bushing (A-1/28).

Main sealing (A-1/33)

Sealing of the main bearing (A-1/15) against seawater is accomplished by shaft
sealing rings (A-1/21) arranged in the sealing housing (A-1/32) with sealing cover (A-
1/20). The shaft sealing rings (A-1/21) are located on the fin shaft liner (A-1/26) of
the fin shaft (A-1/27).
Lubrication of the main bearing (A-1/15) and additional pressing-on of the main seal
is accomplished by the hydraulic oil of the header tank (Fig. 1-11).
The oil column of the header tank (Fig. 1-11) which is connected through the header
tank connection (A-1/24) to the crux, serves for the additional pressing-on of the
seals.

Inboard bearing
The inboard radial bearing consists of fin shaft liner (A-1/45) and bushing (A-1/44)
and transmits the minor radial bearing forces at the fin shaft to the crux (A-1/4).
Rotary vane hub (A-1/46) and bushing (A-1/44) form an axial bearing and take up
the axial forces of the fin shaft (A-1/27).

1.3.1.2 Swivel drive

The swivel drive is used for retraction and extension of the fin.
It consists of the housing and extending cylinder (A-1/22), which rotates the crux (A-1/4) by 90°
via the swivel arm (A-1/38).
The housing and extending cylinder is pivoted on the fin box (A-1/42) and swivel arm (A-1/38) by
means of straight pins and spherical plain bearings. The axial forces of the housing and
extending cylinder are absorbed by intermediate rings.
The spherical plain bearings are greased through grease nipples in the straight pin.

Housing and extending cylinder (Fig. 1-6):

The housing and extending cylinder is designed in the form of a differential cylinder.
The effective areas on the piston and annular piston are different and thus the piston
forces are different, i.e.
Full piston area: high retraction force
Annular piston area: low extension force
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The cylinder chambers can be vented through vent valves. Throttle check valves
(Fig. 5-3/26) are used for setting the retraction and extension rates.

1.3.1.3 Rotary vane motor

The rotary vane motor (A-1/14) serves as swivel drive for the fin (A-1/29).
Basically, it consists of the stationary rotary vane housing (Fig. 1-7/6) and the rotating rotary
vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1). In practice, the rotating rotary vane hub is called rotor and the stationary
rotary vane housing is called stator.
The rotary vane housing (A-1/18) is covered by the rotary vane bottom (A-1/16) and the rotary
vane cover ring (A-1/19). These parts are bolted together by socket-head cap screws (A-1/25)
and connected by hydraulically pre-tensioned tie rods (A-1/17) in the area of the fixed stops.
The rotary vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1) is connected to the fin shaft (Fig. 1-7/8) via the splined profile.
Four pressure chambers are formed by the two-bladed rotary vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1) and the two
fixed stops (Fig. 1-7/9) in the rotary vane housing (Fig. 1-7/6). Two pressure chambers, located
diagonally opposite each other, are interconnected by an oil bore (Fig. 1-7/7).
If oil under pressure is supplied, two pressure chambers A or B are pressurized with oil under
pressure and the rotary vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1) rotates with the fin into the appropriate direction.
From the other two pressure chambers the oil under pressure is forced back to the oil tank of the
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

hydraulic power unit.

The oil under pressure is passed from and to the pressure chambers through pressure oil
standpipe (A-1/11) and bores (A-1/12) in the crux (A-1/4) and rotary vane housing (Fig. 1-7/6).
(For further details see Section 1.3.1.4.)
Radial sealing of the rotary vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1) against the rotary vane housing (Fig. 1-7/6) is
accomplished by radial sealing sets (Fig. 1-7/4) and sealing webs (Fig. 1-7/3).
These radial sealing sets are located in the grooves of the rotary vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1) and
rotary vane housing (Fig. 1-7/6) and are hydraulically/ mechanically pressed on during operation.
Axial sealing of the rotary vane hub (Fig. 1-7/1) against the rotary vane bottom (A-1/16) and
rotary vane cover ring (A-1/19) is accomplished by sealing rings (Fig. 1-7/5) and radial sealing
set (Fig. 1-7/4) arranged on both sides. Pressing on is accomplished hydraulically and
mechanically.

1.3.1.4 Pressure oil feed and return

The pressure oil feed to the rotary vane motor as well as the return is accomplished through
bores (A-1/12) in the crux (A-1/4).
The connection between the pipelines fixed to the fin box and the crux is accomplished by means of
hose assembly (A-1/10). These are connected via swivel device (A-1/13) and standpipes (A-1/11)
to the crux (A-1/4).
Due to the swivel device (A-1/13) the flexible connections are sealed to move freely when the crux
is rotated.
The header tank connection (A-1/24) between the crux and fixed pipeline corresponds to the
pressure oil feed or pressure oil return with respect to design.

1.3.1.5 Fin with tail flap assembly

The fin (A-1/29) is connected to the fin shaft (A-1/27) by means of a straight pin (A-1/51).
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The tail flap (A-1/31) is pivoted by tail flap bearings (A-1/30) on the fin.
The tail flap lever (A-1/40) is connected to the tail flap (A-1/31) by means of a straight pin.
The tail flap (A-1/31) is connected to the crux (A-1/4) by means of the tail flap drive (A-1/34),
consisting of the tail flap lever (A-1/40), sliding block (A-1/49) and bearing trunnion (A-1/39).

Function (Fig. 1-8):

The open end of the tail flap lever (Fig. 1-8/2) is located on sliding block (Fig. 1-8/7)
and bearing trunnion (Fig. 1-8/3) fitted to the crux (Fig. 1-8/1). If the fin shaft (Fig. 1-
8/4) and, thus, the fin (Fig. 1-8/5) is rotated, the tail flap (Fig. 1-8/6) rotates in the
same direction but is tilted to a greater angle than the fin by the tail flap lever (Fig. 1-
8/2).

1.3.1.6 Fin angle feedback

The fin angle feedback is required for the stabilizer control, i.e.
1. For control and monitoring of the fin centering during retraction and extension.
2. For transmission of the angle of attack of the fin (actual value) to the stabilizer
control during stabilizing.
3. For monitoring the permissible angle of attack of the fin during stabilizing.

The fin angle feedback basically consists of control shaft (A-1/50) with sensor part (A-1/47) and
fin angle transmitter (A-1/9). There is no connection between sensor part (A-1/47) and fin angle
transmitter (A-1/9).
The control shaft (A-1/50) is connected to the control pin (A-1/48) of the fin shaft (A-1/27) via rod
coupling (A-1/52). The control shaft (A-1/50) is located in a standpipe.
The rotary movement of the fin shaft (A-1/27) [change of the angle of attack of the fin] is
transmitted to the fin angle transmitter via the above mentioned components. The rotary
movement is converted to electrical signals by the fin angle transmitter.

1.3.1.7 Lubricating unit

The lubricating unit (Fig. 1-9) supplies the crux bearings with lubricating oil during the stabilizing
operation. It is automatically switched on when the fin stabilizing system is switched on, and it is
switched off after retraction to the final position.
Basically, the lubricating unit (Fig. 1-9) consists of the tank (Fig. 1-9/1) with the lubricating pump
(Fig. 1-9/9) which is driven by the electric motor (Fig. 1-9/4).
The pressure side of each pump is connected via test connection and pipeline to a crux bearing.
The lubricating oil pressure is restricted to 0,8 bar by means of pressure relief valves (Fig. 1-9/8). At
a pressure of >0,8 bar the pressure relief valves open and part of the lubricating oil flows back into
the tank (Fig. 1-9/1).
The level switch (Fig. 1-9/3) will trigger an alarm, if the oil level in the tank (Fig. 1-9/1) drops below
the minimum level.
When the electric motor is switched off the return line from the crux bearing top and crux bearing
bottom is closed by the check valve (Fig. 1-9/12).
When the electric motor is switched on the check valve (Fig. 1-9/12) is opened by the oil pressure in
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

the control line (Fig. 1-9/13).

Lubricating pump (Fig. 1-10):
The lubricating pump is designed in the form of a twin gear-type pump. It consists of
two pump housings (Fig. 1-10/1 and Fig. 1-10/6) which are connected by an
intermediate housing (Fig. 1-10/3).
Two intermeshing gear shafts (Fig. 1-10/17 and Fig. 1-10/16) each are located in the
pump housings. The gear shafts (Fig. 1-10/17) are connected via a coupling (Fig. 1-
10/5) and are driven by the electric motor.
The oil from the suction chamber is forced to the pressure side in the tooth gaps at
the housing wall. By the intermeshing teeth of the gear shafts (Fig. 1-10/16 and
Fig. 1-10/17) the oil carried along in the tooth gaps is supplied to the pressure
chamber and subsequently to the connected lubricating points.
The gear shafts are supported in friction bearings and are sealed at the penetrations
by shaft sealing rings (Fig. 1-10/7).

1.3.1.8 Header tank

One header tank each is connected via header tank connection (A-2/13) to the crux of the port
and starboard fin unit and also to the tank of the hydraulic power unit via pressure relief valve
(Fig. 5-2/183).
The oil tank (Fig. 1-11/6) is filled up automatically with hydraulic oil when the stabilizer is
switched on for stabilizing.
It takes up oil of the rotary vane motor. At the same time it ensures an improvement of the main
sealing system by additional pressing on of the sealing lips due to the static height of the oil
column.
The oil tank (Fig. 1-11/6) is equipped with an automatic breather and vent valve (Fig. 1-11/5).
This will be automatically closed when the tank has been completely vented and filled with oil.
When the header tank (Fig. 1-11) is completely filled up the pressure relief valve (Fig. 5-2/183) is
opened and further oil flows to the oil tank of the hydraulic power unit.

1.3.2 Hydraulic system

Each fin unit is equipped with its own hydraulic system which basically consists of the following
components:
(1) Hydraulic power unit
(2) Hydraulic fin control unit
(3) Valve group 1
(3E) Valve group 2

(1) Hydraulic power unit

The hydraulic power unit (A-3/1) supplies the required oil under pressure to the hydraulic
system. The oil under pressure is supplied by the main pump (A-3/4) and, in an emergency, by
the emergency pump (A-3/5).
Due to the intermittent hydraulic oil requirement, the pressure side of the main pump (A-3/4) is
connected to the bladder accumulator (A-3/19).
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The bladder accumulator (A-3/19) and main pump (A-3/4) form a bladder accumulator and supply
unit, i.e. if hydraulic oil is required, this will be taken from the bladder accumulator and the output of
the main pump (A-3/4) will be increased according to the hydraulic oil requirement.
In case of failure of electric power or main pump (A-3/4) the emergency pump unit (A-3/60)
supplies oil under pressure to the valve group 1 (A-3/3) and valve group 2 (A-3/3E) in order to allow
the fin to be manually centered and retracted.
The hydraulic oil in the oil tank (A-3/7) is circulated and cooled by the oil cooling circuit (A-3/6, A-
3/10) during operation.
For further details of the hydraulic power unit see section 1.3.2.1.

(2) Hydraulic fin control unit

The hydraulic fin control unit (A-3/2) serves for controlling the rotary vane motor (A-3/29).
It is electrically controlled from the stabilizer control and it controls the fin movement as a
function of the fin angle and fin angle rate by means of the hydraulic oil flow.
For further details see Section 1.3.2.2.

(3) Valve group 1

The valve group 1 (A-3/3) is used for centering as well as for extension and retraction of the fin.
It contains directional valves which can be operated electrically or manually.
The electrically operated directional valves are automatically controlled from the stabilizer control
in the fin control cabinet.
The manually operated hand knobs of the directional valves are used for manual emergency
operation in case of a malfunction of the stabilizer control.
For further details see Section 1.3.2.3.

(3E) Valve group 2

The valve group 2 (A-3/3E) is used for centering as well as for extension and retraction of the fin,
in case of failure at valve group 1.
It contains directional valves which can be operated only manually.
For further details see Section 1.3.2.3.

1.3.2.1 Hydraulic power unit

The hydraulic power unit (A-3/1) supplies the hydraulic system with oil under pressure required
for stabilizer operation.
The basic unit is formed by the oil tank (A-3/7) on which the following components are located:
− Main pump unit (A-3/59) consisting of the main pump (A-3/4) and circulating
pump (A-3/6).
− Oil cooling unit (A-3/6,10), consisting of the circulating pump (A-3/6) flanged to
the main pump (A-3/4) and oil cooler (A-3/10).
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

− Emergency pump unit (A-3/60), bladder accumulator (A-3/19) and connecting

block (A-3/120).
− Monitoring units such as thermometer and temperature switch (A-3/20), level
switch (A-3/15) and oil dipstick (A-3/9), pressure gauge (A-3/18), oil filler and air
breather (A-3/22) and pressure relief valve (A-3/14), consisting of (A-3/14.1,
14.2, 14.3), pressure switch (A-3/38) and electrical contamination alarm of return
line filter (A-3/11), leak oil line filter (A-3/267) and pressure filter (A-3/266).

For space arrangement of the above-mentioned units see Fig. A-4.

The main pump (A-3/4) and/or emergency pump (A-3/5) supply oil through the check valve (A-
3/12 or A-3/48) into the common pressure line.
The pressure line is connected to the valve group 1 (A-3/3), valve group 2 (A-3/3E) and
hydraulic fin control unit (A-3/2).
The bladder accumulator (A-3/19) is connected to the pressure line via the connecting block (A-
3/120). The connecting block (A-3/120) protects the bladder accumulator (A-3/19) from damage
due to overpressure and enables a shut-off from the pump circuit.

Description Page 1-37

Function:
The main pump (A-3/4) automatically controls the output back to zero as soon as the
bladder accumulator (A-3/19) is full and the operating pressure has been reached.
If the hydraulic fin control unit (A-3/2), valve group 1 (A-3/3) or valve group 2 (A-
3/3E) require hydraulic oil, the bladder accumulator (A-3/19) supplies part of the
required hydraulic oil (approximately 50%), the main pump (A-3/4) is switched to
delivery and supplies the remaining part of the required hydraulic oil to the consumer
circuit.
The consumer circuit is protected from damage due to overpressure by the pressure
relief valve (A-3/14).
The pressure relief valve (A-3/14) is electrically controlled and opened in the
automatic switch-on mode. As a result, depressurized starting of the main pump is
possible. In the automatic switch-off mode it is also electrically controlled, opened,
and the bladder accumulator (A-3/19) is emptied.
The emergency pump unit (A-3/60) is additionally protected by a pressure relief valve
(A-3/35).
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The shut-off valve (A-3/13) permits a filter circuit of the hydraulic oil over an extended
period in connection with the emergency pump (A-3/5).
The oil tank (A-3/7) is equipped with a man hole covers (A-4/220), an oil dipstick (A-
3/9) and a drain valve (A-3/153).
The hydraulic oil from the oil tank (A-3/7) is continuously circulated and cooled via
the water-cooled oil cooler (A-3/10) by the circulating pump A-3/6) during the
stabilizer operation. (see also Fig. A-4)
A thermometer and temperature switch (A-3/20) monitors the oil and temperature
and switches off the hydraulic power unit in case of over-temperature.
The oil pressure is indicated by the pressure gauge (A-3/18) and the oil level is
controlled by the oil level alarm (A-3/15).
The level switch (A-3/15) switches off the system if the oil drops or if there is a lack of
oil.
The oil tank can be filled up through a separate oil connection >13< by using a filling
filter with 5 µm filtration.
The return line filter (A-3/11) is installed in the common return line of the hydraulic fin
control unit (A-3/2), the valve group 1 (A-3/3) and the valve group 2 (A-3/3E) and is
supplied with an electrical contamination alarm. An alarm is given when it is
necessary to change the filter element (A-4/190) of the return line filter (A-3/11).
The pressure switch (A-3/38) switches off the fin stabilizer port or starboard
immediately when for example a hose assembly is broken and as a result of this the
oil pressure drops to a given minimum.

1.3.2.1.1 Main pump

The main pump (A-3/4) supplies oil under pressure to the hydraulic system. The pump is driven
by the electric motor (A-3/250) via a flexible coupling.
The pump sucks oil from the oil tank (A-3/7) and forces the oil through the hose assembly (A-
3/51) and check valve (A-3/12) into the consumer line. The hydraulic fin control unit (A-3/2),
valve group 1 (A-3/3) and valve group 2 (A-3/3E) are connected to the consumer line.
If no hydraulic oil is used, the main pump (A-3/4) continues to deliver until the bladder
accumulator (A-3/19) has reached the operating pressure.
Subsequently, the output of the pump is mechanically and automatically set back to almost zero
and the operating pressure is maintained.

Main pump (Fig. 1-12)

The main pump (Fig. 1-12) is an axial piston displacement pump of swash plate design, with
pressure regulator and two shaft ends.
A circulating gear pump (Fig. 1-12/14), which is attached to the main pump, is driven by the
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

coupling of the second shaft.

The main pump consists of a pump housing (Fig. 1-12/1), piston (Fig. 1-12/2), connection plate
(Fig. 1-12/3), drive shaft (Fig. 1-12/4), swash plate (Fig. 1-12/5), control piston (Fig. 1-12/6), oil
flow limiter (Fig. 1-12/7), cylinder (Fig. 1-12/8) and pressure regulator (Fig. 1-12/9).
The pressure required can be set at the pressure regulator (Fig. 1-12/9).
The maximum oil flow quantity is set by the maker and cannot be changed without dismantling
the circulating pump (Fig. 1-12/14).
Suction and delivery operation:
The drive shaft (Fig. 1-12/4), which is driven by the electric motor is supported in two
roller bearings and drives the cylinder (Fig. 1-12/8), containing bores for nine pistons
(Fig. 1-12/2), via a multi splined connection.
One end of each piston (Fig. 1-12/2) slides on the swash plate (Fig. 1-12/5), which
pivots in the pump housing (Fig. 1-12/1), but which does not rotate with the drive
shaft (Fig. 1-12/4).
The inclination of the swash plate (Fig. 1-12/5) is continuously variable by the control
piston (Fig. 1-12/6). The respective inclination of the swash plate (Fig. 1-12/5)
determines the stroke of the piston (Fig. 1-12/2) and hence the delivery volume of
the pump.
The maximum delivery volume of the pump is set by the maker of the pump.
The pistons (Fig. 1-12/2) rotating with the cylinder (Fig. 1-12/8) perform a suction
stroke and a delivery stroke during every revolution and tilted swash plate (Fig. 1-
12/5).
The pistons (Fig. 1-12/2) are constantly forced against the swash plate by the
retaining plate (Fig. 1-12/10).

Revision 00

Description Page 1-39

The cylinder (Fig. 1-12/8) is forced by the spring (Fig. 1-12/11) against the control
plate (Fig. 1-12/12); the latter containing control slots for the oil lifted by the suction
stroke and supplied by the delivery stroke.
The control plate (Fig. 1-12/12) constitutes the communicating member between the
rotating cylinder (Fig. 1-12/8) and the stationary pump housing (Fig. 1-12/1).
The swash plate (Fig. 1-12/5) is pivoted by the control piston (Fig. 1-12/6) until the oil
delivered has reached the operating pressure set at the pressure regulator (Fig. 1-
12/9). Then the swash plate (Fig. 1-12/5) is returned by the control piston (Fig. 1-
12/13).
Now the pump delivers only a minimum amount of oil to maintain the operating
pressure.
The attached circulating pump (Fig. 1-12/14) supplies circulating oil from the oil tank
(A-3/7) through the oil cooler (A-3/10) back to the tank.

ATTENTION! Danger to real values!

After dismantling or extended idle periods of the pump the pump housing must be filled

1.3.2.1.2 Emergency pump unit

If the main pump (A-3/4) or the ship's main electrical supply fails, the emergency pump unit (A-
3/60) is used to supply pressure oil to the valve group 1 (A-3/3) and valve group 2 (A-3/3E),
which serves for centering and retraction of the fin during emergency operation. If the system is
switched off, a filter circuit can additionally be established by means of the emergency pump via
the return line filter (A-3/11) and discharge valve (A-3/13).
As a result, the content of the oil tank (A-3/7) can be filtered after replenishment of oil or if the oil
is changed.
The emergency pump unit (A3/60) consists of a gear pump which is driven by an electric motor
via a flexible coupling. It sucks directly from the oil tank (A-3/7) and forces the oil through a
check valve into the pressure line from the main pump (A-3/4).

Pump (Fig. 1-13)

The pump is designed as a gear-type pump.
It consists of a housing (Fig. 1-13/2) in which two gear wheels (Fig. 1-13/3 and
Fig. 1-13/4) are supported in bearing blocks (Fig. 1-13/6) with bearing bushings
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

(Fig. 1-13/5).
The gear wheel (Fig. 1-13/3) is driven by the drive shaft (Fig. 1-13/1). At the same
time, the gear wheel (Fig. 1-13/4) is driven. In the tooth gaps of the gear wheels the
hydraulic oil is passed from the suction side to the pressure side.
On the pressure side the oil carried in the tooth gaps is forced into the pressure line
by the intermeshing teeth of the gear wheels (Fig. 1-13/3 and Fig. 1-13/4).

1.3.2.1.3 Bladder accumulator

The bladder accumulator (A-3/19) has a nitrogen pre-filling.
The bladder accumulator is connected to the pressure line of the main pump (A-3/4) via a line
with the connecting block (A-3/120).
If hydraulic oil is required, the bladder accumulator supplies part of the required hydraulic oil
(approximately 50 %) to the operating circuit. The remaining part of the hydraulic oil is supplied
by the main pump (A-3/4).
If hydraulic oil is no longer required, the main pump (A-3/4) delivers into the bladder accumulator
(A-3/19) until the maximum operating pressure has been reached, i.e. hydraulic oil is
accumulated. If hydraulic oil is required, it will again be forced into the operating circuit.
The connecting block (A-3/120) protects the bladder accumulator from damage due to
overpressure by means of a built-in pressure relief valve.
Hydraulic oil can be passed from the bladder accumulator to the oil tank (A-3/7) of the hydraulic
power unit via discharge valve (A-3/42).
The bladder accumulator can be shut off from the hydraulic system by means of shut-off valve
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

(A-3/41).
(1) Construction (Fig. 1-14)
The bladder accumulator consists of a container (Fig. 1-14/5) of seamless rolled
steel in which an accumulator bladder (Fig. 1-14/4) of flexible oil-resistant material
with a gas valve (Fig. 1-14/1) is installed. If the bladder accumulator is empty, the
accumulator bladder is pre-filled with nitrogen via the gas valve (check valve with cap
nut).
The bottom connection of the steel container to the hydraulic system is equipped
with an oil valve (Fig. 1-14/3). Normally, this valve is fully open and it will not be
closed until the oil side is completely drained, by the expanding accumulator bladder
(Fig. 1-14/4).
(2) Function (Fig. 1-14)
The bladder accumulator becomes pressurized with hydraulic oil during the moving
and stabilizing operation.
If the pump pressure is higher than the pressure in the accumulator bladder (Fig. 1-
14/4), hydraulic oil flows through the oil valve (Fig. 1-14/3) into the bladder
accumulator. As a result, the accumulator bladder is compressed and the nitrogen
accumulates pressure energy.
If hydraulic oil is used, the pressure in the hydraulic system decreases and the
accumulator bladder expands. As a result, hydraulic oil flows from the bladder
accumulator until the pressure in the hydraulic system and in the accumulator
bladder is in balance.

1.3.2.1.4 Oil cooling circuit

The oil cooling circuit serves to cool the hot hydraulic oil. Basically, it consists of the following
components:
− Circulating pump (A-3/6)
− Oil cooler (A-3/10)
The pump sucks directly from the oil tank (A-3/7) and forces the hydraulic oil via lines with check
valves (A-3/46 and A-3/47) and the oil cooler (A-3/10) back into the oil tank (A-3/7).
The hydraulic oil is cooled in the oil cooler by means of water. If the oil cooler is defective, the
check valves (A-3/46 and A-3/47) prevent water from entering into the oil circuit.

Gear-Type Pump (Fig. 1-14.1)

The pump is designed as a gear-type pump.
It consists of a housing (Fig. 1-14.1/2) in which two gear wheels (Fig. 1-14.1/3 and
Fig. 1-14.1/4) are supported in bearing blocks (Fig. 1-14.1/6) with bearing bushings
(Fig. 1-14.1/5).
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The gear wheel (Fig. 1-14.1/3) is driven by the drive shaft (Fig. 1-14.1/1). At the
same time, the gear wheel (Fig. 1-14.1/4) is driven. In the tooth gaps of the gear
wheels the hydraulic oil is passed from the suction side to the pressure side.
On the pressure side the oil carried in the tooth gaps is forced into the pressure line
by the intermeshing teeth of the gear wheels (Fig. 1-14.1/3 and Fig. 1-14.1/4).

Oil cooler
The oil cooler (A-3/10) is designed as a heat exchanger with pipe assembly. Cooling
water flows through the pipe assembly on the inside and hydraulic oil flows around
on the outside.

ATTENTION! Danger to real values!

There shall be a permanent flow of cooling water through the cooler even if the stabilizer
is switched off.
The life time of the cooler is considerably reduced if stationary river, sea or brackish
water is contained in the cooler.

1.3.2.1.5 Return and leak oil line filter

One return line filter (A-3/11) is installed in the common return line of the hydraulic fin control unit
(A-3/2), valve group 1 (A-3/3) and valve group 2 (A-3/3E).

Also in the leak oil line of the main pump, a filter (A-3/267) is installed in the flushing connection
from the main pump (4) to the oil tank (7).

Construction (Fig. 1-15)

Both filters consist of a filter head (Fig. 1-15/3) with electrical contamination alarm
(Fig. 1-15/5), filter housing (Fig. 1-15/2) and filter element (Fig. 1-15/1).
Sealing between the filter head (Fig. 1-15/3) and filter housing (Fig. 1-15/2) is
accomplished by means of an O-ring (Fig. 1-15/6).
The hydraulic oil enters via connection A of the filter head (Fig. 1-15/3) and flows
through the filter element (Fig. 1-15/1) from the outside to the inside. As a result, any
dirt particles in the hydraulic oil are retained and collected by the filter element.
In case of excessive contamination of the filter element (Fig. 1-15/1) the cross-
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

section of passage of the filter element (Fig. 1-15/1) will be reduced. As a result, the
pressure at the filter inlet A increases. The electrical contamination alarm (Fig. 1-
15/5) responds. After changing of the filter element (Fig. 1-15/1) and cleaning of the
filter housing (Fig. 1-15/2) the electrical contamination alarm (Fig. 1-15/5) must no
longer be activated.

1.3.2.2 Hydraulic fin control unit

The most important part of the electric / hydraulic control is the hydraulic fin control unit (A-3/2).
The hydraulic fin control unit is used to hydraulically amplify the signals from the electric control
unit (stabilizer control) and to convert these signals into hydraulic output signals which serve to
control and regulate the flow of the hydraulic oil to the rotary vane motor and thus the movement
of the fin, fin angle and fin angle rate.
The hydraulic fin control unit consists of
− Connecting block (Fig.1-16/1)
− Proportional control valve (Fig. 1-16/6)

Function (Fig. 1-16)

The hydraulic oil is supplied to the proportional control valve (Fig. 1-16/6) via
connecting block (Fig. 1-16/1).
In the proportional control valve the main control piston of the main valve (Fig. 1-
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

16/3) is deflected according to the electrical control of the pilot control valve (Fig. 1-
16/5).
As a result, the hydraulic oil is deflected into the respective direction and flows via
A or B and shut-off valve (A-3/8) to the rotary vane motor (A-3/29).
The return oil from the rotary vane motor flows via shut-off valve (A-3/8) and A or B
of the connecting block (Fig. 1-16/1) to the main valve (Fig. 1-16/3).
In this valve the oil is deflected by the main control piston and flows via the
connecting block (Fig. 1-16/1) into the oil tank (A-3/7).

1.3.2.2.1 Proportional control valve

The proportional control valve is used to convert the electrical signals from the stabilizer control
into hydraulic output signals. As a result the rate and direction of the hydraulic oil flow to the
rotary vane motor is controlled.

Design and Function (Fig. 1-18)

The proportional control valve consists of the following components:
− Pilot control valve (Fig. 1-18/2) which converts the electrical signals into
hydraulic signals and thus controls the main valve (Fig. 1-18/1).
− Main valve (Fig. 1-18/1) which controls the rate and direction of the pressure oil
to the rotary vane motor.
− Positioning control (Fig. 1-18/4 and Fig. 1-18/5).
Position feedback transmitters on the pistons of the pilot control valve and of the
main valve measure and transmit the position of the pistons to the positioning
control loop. In case of deviation from the desired signal the position of the
piston of the pilot control valve is corrected.
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

− Electronic amplifier (Fig. 1-18/8)

The electronic amplifier (Fig. 1-18/8) controls the electric signal from the
stabilizer control and contains the position control of the main valve (Fig. 1-18/1)
and pilot control valve (Fig. 1-18/2).
The pressure oil (connection P) which is applied to the main valve (Fig. 1-18/1)
is directed via the internal P-channel to the inlet of the pilot control valve (Fig. 1-
18/2).
In case the proportional solenoid (Fig. 1-18/3) is controlled by the stabilizer
control the force of the proportional solenoid (Fig. 1-18/3) will act on the piston of
the pilot control valve.

This is deflected and control oil is flowing to the pressure chamber of the main valve (Fig. 1-
18/1) until the piston of the main valve has reached the required position. The pistons of the pilot
control valve (Fig. 1-18/2) and main valve are controlled by the positioning control (Fig. 1-18/4
and Fig. 1-18/5) and corrected if necessary.
The pressure oil flows from connection P via A to the rotary vane motor, i.e. the fin set angle α is
changed. The return oil from the rotary vane motor flows via connection B into the T-channel
and from there to the oil tank.
When switching on the stabilizer plant the proportional control valve will not yet receive electrical
setting signals as the fin must be extended, i.e. the main piston is kept in mid-position by spring
pressure.
The fin is retracted until the limit switch "HOUSED" is contacted. Then the proportional control
valve receives "ZERO SIGNAL", i.e. the proportional solenoid is activated. Pressure oil is
directed from P to the rotary vane motor via B and A respectively until the fin is centered.

Revision 00
- Fin Stabilizer
Description Page 1-52

After centering the fin will be extended.

When the fin is fully extended the limit switch "EXTENDED" is contacted and the proportional
control valve receives the stabilizing signal.
The fin is operating.
According to the stabilizing signal of the stabilizer control the proportional solenoid (Fig. 1-18/3)
is activated and the main piston is deflected proportionally to the stabilizing signal.
Pressure oil is flowing from P to the rotary vane motor via A and B respectively until the fin set
angle αnominal is reached.

ATTENTION! Danger to real values!

If the proportional control valve is changed it is necessary to prove if the pilot oil inlet X
and pilot oil outlet Y is carried out correctly.

1.3.2.3 Valve groups

Note!
Only skilled workers who are specialized to work on this fin stabilizer system are qualified to do
this work when they are additionally watched by another authorized person.

Each valve group (A-3/3 and A-3/3E) consists of a connecting block on which directional valves
are located. The valves for valve group 1 (A-3/3) are electrically operated during automatic mode
or manually during emergency operation, at valve group 2 (A-3/3E) are these valves only for
manually operation designed, because the second valve group is for emergency operation only.
The directional valves are used to control retraction and extension, centering and lowering of the
fin.

Function of valve group 1 (Fig. A-3/3)

The directional valves are connected to the hydraulic system via bores in the connecting block.
The valves have the following functions:
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

The directional valve (A-3/23) is controlled after retraction of the fin to the final
position and forms a connection to the rotary vane motor (A-3/29). As a result,
lowering of the fin tip to the bottom of the fin box is performed.
The connected pressure reducing valve (A-3/39) serves to reduce the oil pressure of
the rotary vane motor if the fin is lowered.
The directional valve (A-3/32) is automatically controlled during switching on and off of
the stabilizer operation, if the fin angle is > ± 3° and the fin cannot be retracted or
extended with zero signal. It controls centering of the fin in zero position for retraction or
extension.
The directional valve (A-3/27) serves for retraction and extension of the fin via the
housing and extending cylinder (A-3/30). It is automatically controlled after centering
of the fin in zero position.
In zero position of the directional valve (A-3/27) the housing and extending cylinder
(30) is hydraulically locked by means of the connected check valve (A-3/31).
The directional valve (A-3/32), emergency operation with hand knob, is used for
centering of the fin if the ship’s electric power supply or main pump (A-3/4) fails.
The directional valve (A-3/27), emergency operation with hand knob, serves for
retraction and extension of the fin during emergency operation, if the stabilizer
control, main pump (A-3/4) or the electric power supply should fail.
See also Fig. 5-1.

Revision 00
- Fin Stabilizer
Description Page 1-55

Function of valve group 2 (Fig. A-3/3E)

The valve group 2 (A-3/3E) is only for emergency operation with the hand knobs if there is a
failure in the valve group 1 (A-3/3). The valves from valve group 1 (A-3/3) and valve group 2 (A-
3/3E) are identical.
The function of valve A-3/27, A-3/265 and A-3/32 is identical to valve A-3/27E, A-
3/265E and A-3/32E.
To lower the fin use valve A-3/32E.
To enable locking and unlocking with locking cylinder (A-3/294) change over three-
way valves (A-3/268) and (A-3/269).
To enable housing and extending of the fin with housing and extending cylinder (A-
3/30) change over three-way valves (A-3/270) and (A-3/271).
To enable fin centering (±3°) and fin lowering (Nose up) with rotary vane motor (A-
3/23) check valve (A-3/280) and valve (A-3/281) for open condition.
If there is a failure in valve group 1 (A-3/3) close valve (A-3/284, T), valve (A-3/285,
P), valve (A-3/221, A2) and valve (A-3/222, B), then only emergency operations with
the hand knobs of vale group 2 (A-3/3E) are possible.

Description Page 1-56

1.3.2.4 Pressure switch

Note!
Only skilled workers who are specialized to work on this fin stabilizer system are qualified to do
this work when they are additionally watched by another authorized person.

The pressure switch (see Fig. 1-19 and A-3/38) is a piston hydro-electric type pressure switch.
It basically consists of the housing (Fig. 1-19/1), cartridge with piston (Fig. 1-19/2), pressure
spring (Fig. 1-19/3), adjustment element (Fig. 1-19/4) and micro switch (Fig. 1-19/5).
The pressure to be monitored is applied to the piston (Fig. 1-19/2) via orifice (Fig. 1-19/7). The
piston (Fig. 1-19/2) supports itself on the spring plate (Fig. 1-19/6) acts against the infinitely
variable force of the pressure spring (Fig. 1-19/3). The spring plate (Fig. 1-19/6) transfers the
movement of the piston (Fig. 1-19/2) to the micro switch (Fig. 1-19/5) and releases the same on
reaching the set pressure. Through this, the electric circuit is closed.
If the pressure to be monitored is below the set value then the micro switch (Fig. 1-19/5) is
4506E-00_S800-517-05 Part A.doc

actuated, the electric circuit is opened and pressure alarm is given.

The respective stabilizer plant is switched off immediately.
To increase the monitored pressure remove the protective cap (Fig. 1-19/8) and turn the
adjusting element in the clockwise direction and replace the protective cap (Fig. 1-19/8) again.
The set pressure must be about 15 to 20 bars below the minimum working pressure of the fin
stabilizer monitored on pressure gauge (A-3/18, A-4/18).
Then the pressure switch can decrease the loss of oil of the hydraulic power unit to a minimum
when for example a hose assembly is broken.

ATTENTION! Danger to real values!

Do not change the workshop pre-setting of this switch to avoid any possible damages to
the main pump! In case of too low pressure, the pump can get damaged!
