Assignment 2

1. Air flows through a cylindrical tube made of naphthalene at a velocity of 5 m/s. The
diameter of the tube is 0.1 m and the temperature of the air is 20 ºC.a) Using the correlation
proposed by Linton and Sherwood given below,calculate the mass transfer coefficient for
the transfer of naphthalene to air.

Sh = 0.023 Re0.83 Sc1/3

Compare this result with the values obtained using the analogies of:
i) Reynolds
ii) Prandtl
iii) Von Kármán
iv) Chilton-Colburn

Note that the friction factor for this system, f, can be estimated using
the equation :

f/2= (2.236 ln Re –4.639)–2

Data:µair = 1.8 × 10–5 kg/m.s

ρair = 1.2 kg/m3 DAB = 4.24 × 10–6 m2/s

2. Calculate the value of Mass transfer coefficient and flux of mass transfer from a sphere of
naphthalene to air at 40ºC and 1 atm flowing at velocity of 0.45 m/s. The diameter of sphere
is 25.4 mm. The diffusivity of naphthalene in air at 45ºC is 6.92 × 10–6 m2/s and vapor
pressure of solid naphthalene is 0.55 mm of mercury.
Data:
μ= 1.9 × 10–5 Pa.s,
ρ= 1.11 kg/m3
Use the following
correlation : Sh = 2 + 0.552 Re 0.53 + Sc0.33

3. An air stream at 51.6 ºC and 2 atmospheres (abs.) flows through a duct

at 1.524 m/s past samples of solid naphthalene. Naphthalene diffusivity
at 0ºC and 101.32 kPa is 5.15 × 10–6 m2/s.
Estimate mass transfer coefficient Kc for flow past the following shapes:
i) Parallel to a flat plate 150 mm long:
ii) Alone sphere of 12.7 mm diameter.
Data: at 52.6 ºC and 2 atm (abs.)

viscosity= 1.96 × 10–5 kg/m.s

ρ= 1.087 kg/m3
DAB = 3.51 × 10–6 m2/sec.

4. It is required to estimate the rate at which water evaporates from a wetted surface of an
unusual shape when H2 at 1 std. atm and 38°C is blown over the surface at a superficial
velocity of 15m/s. No mass transfer measurements indicate that for air at 1 std. Atm and
38°C, the heat transfer coefficient ‘h’ between air and the surface is given by the empirical
relation

ℎ=25.3 G’’0.6

where G’ is the superficial mass velocity of air in kg/m2/s.Estimate the mass transfer

5. The solubility of a gaseous substance A(molecular weight 26) in water is givwen by

Henry’s law: pA=105xA ., pA in mm Hg. Convert the equilibrium relation to the following
forms, a) yA=m.xA ., if the total pressure is 10 bar;(b) pA=m’CA ,CA in gmol/litre. Also
write down the equilibrium relation using the mole ratio unit. Assume that the solution is
dilute and has a density equal to that of water.
6. At a particular section of an equipment for absorption of solute A in a liquid, the bulk gas
phase contains 9.5mol% A and the liquid contains 2 mol% of it. The gas-film side mass
transfer. ky=10 kmol/h.m2 (Δy) and 60% of the mass transfer resistance occurs in the liquid
film. The Henry’s law applies, yA=0.85xA. Calculate (a) overall mass transfer coefficient,
Kx (b) the molar flux of A (c) interfacial concentration of the solute xAi and yAi .
7. 4. A gas stream containing 90 mol% N2 and 10% CO2 is passed through a tray tower
absorber at a rate of 100 moles/h, in which pure and cool water at 5oC is used as a solvent.
The operation is assumed to be isothermal at 5oC and isobaric at 10 atm.The liquid flow
rate is 1.5 times the minimum liquid flow rate and the liquid flows counter current to the
gas stream.. Determine the number of equilibrium stages required to remove 92 mol% of
CO2 present in the feed . Given Henry’s constant of CO2 in water at 5oC as 876 atm/mole
fraction.
