SRDP Assign 2

The document describes the laboratory equipment used to test the performance of biomass cookstoves, including an emission hood, stack monitoring system, flue emission meter, moisture meter, and hot wire anemometer. The emission hood collects exhaust from the cookstoves and vents it through a duct system. The stack monitoring system measures exhaust flow characteristics. The flue emission meter analyzes exhaust composition. Additional tools measure moisture content of biomass fuel and airflow. The laboratory setup allows accurate testing and analysis of cookstove exhaust according to BIS protocols.

Laboratory Equipment Details
Design of Emission Hood
The chimney is made of standard dimensions as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).The
material of the chimney for hood and circular pipe is galvanized iron (G.I.), 19 gauge ducts.
The frame for the chimney is made of mild steel using angle plate. An iron table of height 2.5
feet is used for placing cook stove. Exhaust fan was placed in chimney duct.
Dimensions of emission hood:

Length of hood = 1000 mm

Width of hood = 1000 mm
Height of hood = 400 mm

Dimension of circular pipe :

Length of pipe = 3500 mm
Diameter of pipe = 160 mm, Bend 90

Procedure for Fabrication and Development of Emission Hood

The procedure for the fabrication of chimney is explained in following points:
i) Selection of material (Galvanized iron sheet)
ii) Make chimney parts as per dimensions given in 2d design layout.
iii) Assemble all parts in laboratory where we have to setup the chimney.
iv) Provide support to the members of chimney and fixed it by nut and bolts.
v) A standard dimension of emission had been installed for performing various
parameters and to perform certain test which requires close control of emission
exhausted in controlled manner.
The fig. shows the existing experimental setup for testing of thermal and emission
performance of different cook stoves.
The setup consists of different components that are:

 Emission collection hood.

 Stack monitoring system.
 Flue emission monitoring
 Weighing Machine
 Forced Draft Metal Cook Stove

Stack Monitoring System

Fig 1.2 Stack Monitoring System

The stack monitoring system consists of a Control Module, Pump Interface, and a Condenser.
It is used to calculate the velocity and pressure of flue gases through pitot assembly, volume
of gas, quantity of particulate matter and weight of filtered residues.

The following are the accessories of stack monitoring system.

 Impinge Box Assembly with 6 Glass
 Impinges & Push Fit Union
 Pump Interface Module
 Condenser Unit with P/F Union
 Pitot Tube, standard length 0.5 / 1 / 1.5 / 2 m
 K type Thermocouple standard length 0.5 / 1 /1.5 / 2 m with 3 / 5 m cable &
connector
 12 Volt DC adaptor
 Control Module
Technical specifications of stack monitoring system :
 Stack Gas temperature : Ambient to 600˚C.
 Stack Gas Pressure : 0 to 200 mm WC.
 Stack Gas Velocity : 0 to 40 m/s.
 Pitot Tube Pressure : 0 to 50 mm WC.
 Set Flow Rate to maintain iso-kinetic condition : 20 to 90 LPM.
 Pump Capacity : 100 LPM.
 Pitot Tube Type : S-type
 Thermocouple : K-type (-270 to 1260˚C).
 Actual Volume of Collected Gas (STP) : 0.1 to 6 m3 .

Maintenance required for Stack Monitoring System are :

 Regular cleaning of pitot tube is required by compressed air.

 Cleaning of exhaust port in pump is required timely.
 Calibration of Control Module is to be done regularly.
Flue Emission Meter

Fig 1.4 Flue Emission Meter

The exhaust gases given out by the natural and force draft cook stoves contain CO, CO2 , NO,
NO 2 , SO 2 . The amount of exhaust gases can be measured by the flue emission monitor.
This machine is used to calculate:
 Oxygen (range 0-25%)
 Temperature (range 0-600˚C)
 Carbon monoxide (range – 0-2%)
 Sulphur Dioxide (range 0-2000 ppm)
 Nitric oxide ( range 0-2000ppm)
 Nitrogen dioxide (range 0-800 ppm)

Moisture Meter
Fig 1.5 Moisture Meter

It is a device that is used to measure the moisture if the fuel used. The moisture of the wood
used as fuel should not be less than 5% and more than 10%.

Specifications of moisture meter:

 Moisture : 2 % - 70 %
 Temperature :-10˚C - 60˚C
 Humidity :20% RH – 95%RH
 Operating Environment : temp. 0˚C - 40˚C

Hot wire Anemometer

Instruments and Other Accessories:

 Mercury in glass thermometers (range 0-100°C) with solid stem/other temperature

measuring device like thermocouples with the accuracy of ± 0.1°C. b) Devices for
higher range of temperature, say 0-1300˚C to measure the flame temperature.
 Digital balance 15 kg capacity (dial type/digital with least count of 1 g) to weigh the
cook stoves, fuel and the water in vessels, etc. and higher capacity balance of 100Kg
with least count of 10gm to weigh the Cook stove, the water in vessels etc. depending
upon size of the Cook stove to be tested.
 Measuring jars; 2 l and 5 l capacity.
 Digital Stop watch with memory or time measuring device.
 Pairs of tong, metallic tray, high temperature gloves, matches, etc.
 Pieces of clean cloth.
 Moisture Meter with microwave or infrared heating facility
 Clean vessels for holding water to be placed on the Cook stove for heating.

Summary
The complete setup of cook stove performance testing consists of different exhaust analyzing
devices which give accurate data of the exhaust gases. The devices work at different ranges
and are used to analyze different aspects of flue gases. The procedure followed for the
experimentation of exhaust gases is based on the BIS protocol. The experimentation is done
on set instructions of the protocol, which not followed will give inaccurate data. The BIS
protocol is best suited for this experiment due to non-wastage of fuel while performing the
experiment as the experiment is continued till all the fuel is burnt.
