Practice Problems 4

The document contains 4 practice problems related to management science. Problem 1 involves assigning 5 judges to 5 court dockets to minimize total time, with estimates provided for each judge on each docket. Problem 2 involves assigning 3 projects to 4 people to minimize costs, with costs provided for each person on each project. Problem 3 involves determining expected times, variances, critical paths, and probability of completion for 7 aircraft assembly activities with predecessors. Problem 4 asks to find the expected time required for an unspecified project.

Practice Problems 4

Management Science
Question 1
A district court administrator wants to assign five judges to five court dockets. The objective is to
minimize the total time required (in days) to complete all of the cases scheduled on the five
dockets. The administrator has made estimates of the number of days which would be required
for each judge to clear each different docket. These estimates are shown in the following table
and are based on the composition of case types on each docket and analysis of the record of each
judge and his or her experience in being able to complete different types of cases.
a) Formulate the objective function and constraint list to make a linear program for the given
scenario
b) Solve the objective of minimizing the total time required

Docket
Judge 1 2 3 4 5
1 20 18 22 24 21
2 18 21 26 20 20
3 22 26 27 25 19
4 25 24 22 24 18
5 23 20 25 23 22

Question 2
There are four people named, Adams, Brown, Cooper and Davis and three project jobs are
available. The cost (in $) of assigning jobs to them are shown in the following table. Assign the
jobs to these four people such that the cost is minimized in the job assignment. Use Hungarian
method. (you can obtain multiple solutions. Pick the one which gives minimized cost value)

Project

Person 1 2 3

Adams 11 14 6

Brown 8 10 11

Cooper 9 12 7

Davis 10 18 8
Question 3
To complete the wing assembly for an experimental aircraft, Scott DeWitte has laid out the major steps
and seven activities involved. These activities have been labeled A through G in the following table,
which also shows their estimated completion times (in weeks) and immediate predecessors. Determine
the following:
a) The expected time and variance for each activity.
b) Network diagram indicating all activities with immediate predecessors.
c) Activities which are on critical path; show them both on the network diagram and in tabular form
with slack values specified.
d) Gantt chart for both early times and late times.
e) Probability of completion of project in less than 20 weeks
f) The percentage of project completion in between 8 and 20 weeks.
g) The number of weeks required for 27% completion of the project.
Question 4
Find out the expected time required to complete the following project.
