Cls6 Math ch1 Day2 Module2

The document provides learning points on comparing numbers, making numbers with given digits, and estimation in mathematics. It explains rules for comparing numbers based on digit value and position. It also outlines how to form the greatest and smallest numbers using given digits by arranging them in descending or ascending order. The document concludes with examples and explanations of rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand using different cases based on the value of digits in the ones, tens, or hundreds place. Audio – 1 –Comparing Numbers.
Audio – 2 – Making new numbers with given digits .

Recapitulation: In module1 we learned about Indian Number system , International Number

System and Place Value, Face Value

______________________________________________________________________________

❖ In this module2 we will learn about comparing numbers, Making numbers using given digits
and estimation.

Comparing Numbers
Rule1: Number which is having more digits is Greater number.

Example : which is Greater number 286 or 1246

Answer: 1246 (because it has 4 digits and the other number has 3 digits)
Rule2: If two numbers have same number of digits, the number with the bigger digit on the left hand
side is Greater number.

Example : which is Greater number 2486 or 1246

Answer: 2486 (because left side digit is greater 2 > 1)

Rule3: If the leftmost digits are same we compare the next digit to the right and keep doing this
until the digits are different.

Example : which is Greater number 42865 or 42886

Answer: 42886 (here three leftmost digits are same, now we have to compare next digits
which are in tens place as 6 < 8 the number 42886 is greater).

Making numbers with given digits

➢ To form Greatest number using given digits:
Arrange given digits in descending order
Example : Form a greatest four digit number using 4,6,2, 9 without repetition.
descending order: 9 > 6 > 4 > 2
Greatest number : 9642
➢ To form smallest number using given digits:
Arrange given digits in ascending order

Example : Form a greatest four digit number using 4,6,2, 9 without repetition.
ascending order: 2 < 4 < 6 < 9
Smallest number : 2469
➢ If zero is given as one of the digits to form number, as a number cannot begin with zero, we
will put it in the second place.
Example : Form a smallest four digit number using 5,0,2, 8 without repetition.
ascending order: 0 < 2 < 5 < 8
smallest number : 2058.

Estimation.
Estimation means to make a guess, it gives us rough idea of the answer to a question.

Rounding off a number to the nearest ten:

Case1: If ones place is less than 5: See the digit in ones place if it is less than 5,replace ones digit
by 0 and keep other digits as they are.

Example: Round off 854 to nearest ten

here ones place digit 4 is less than 5,so replace it with 0 and keep remaining digits as it is

therefore 854 is rounded off to 850.

Case2: If ones place is 5 or more than 5: Increase tens digit by 1, and replace ones digit by 0.
Example: Round off 458 to nearest ten

here ones place digit 8 is greater than 5,so replace ones place digit by 0 and Increase tens digit by
1(5+1=6),keep remaining digits as they are.

therefore 458 is rounded off to 460.

Rounding off a number to the nearest Hundred:

Case1: If tens place is less than5: See the digit in tens place if it is less than 5,replace ones digit
and tens digit by 0 and keep other digits as they are.

Example: Round off 8132 to nearest Hundred

here tens place digit 3 is less than 5,so replace one and tens place with 0 and keep remaining digits as
they are

therefore 8132 is rounded off to 8100.

Case2: If tens place is 5 or more than 5: Increase hundreds digit by 1, and replace ones and tens
digits by 0.

Example: Round off 4568 to nearest Hundred

here tens place digit 6 is greater than 5,so replace ones and tens place digits by 0 and Increase hundreds
digit by 1(5+1=6),keep remaining digits as they are.

therefore 4568 is rounded off to 4600.

Rounding off a number to the nearest thousand:

Case1: If hundreds place is less than 5: See the digit in hundreds place if it is less than
5,replace ones, tens and hundreds digits by 0 and keep other digits as they are.

Example: Round off 8132 to nearest thousand.

here hundreds place digit 1 is less than 5,so replace ones ,tens and hundreds place with 0 and keep
remaining digits as they are

therefore 8132 is rounded off to 8000.

Case2: If hundreds place is 5 or more than 5: Increase thousands digit by 1, and replace ones
tens and hundreds digits by 0.

Example: Round off 4568 to nearest Hundred

here hundreds place digit 5 is equal to 5,so replace ones ,tens and hundreds place digits by 0 and
Increase thousands digit by 1(5+1=6),keep remaining digits as they are.
therefore 4568 is rounded off to 5000.

Work Sheet
1) Use given digits without repetition and make the greatest and smallest 4 digit number.

a) 3, 4 , 6 , 5 b) 5 , 0 ,3 , 2 c) 2 , 7 , 3 ,8 d) 9 , 3 ,8 ,1

2) Find the greatest and the smallest numbers, also find their difference.

a) 5678 , 5423 ,5230 ,5123 b) 19078 , 19234 , 19451 , 19034

3) Estimate to nearest ten and simplify.

a) 68 + 74 b)886 - 474 c) 47 x 72

4) Estimate to nearest hundred and simplify.

a) 278 + 452 d) 8257 - 2328 c) 487 x 576
