Sleeping Beauty

Once upon a time in a far away land, a beautiful girl was born to the king and queen. Fairies from all
over were invited for the celebrations. They brought with them special gifts and blessed the little princess
so that she would become a clever, beautiful and a kind girl.

Just then, an old wicked fairy came to the palace and cursed the princess, “On your sixteenth birthday
you’ll touch a spindle and die”, she screamed in the anger and vanished. Everybody was shocked.

A young fairy was called in the palace. She said, ”I can’t take the evil witch’s curse but I’ll try to help.
When the princess will touch spindle she’ll not die but will instead fall into a deep sleep and will only be
awakened with a kiss of a prince who loves her.”

The king and the queen were so worried for their dear daughter that they ordered all the spinning wheels
of the kingdom to be destroyed forever. However, unknown to them, one spinning wheel was still left.

As the years went by, the baby grew to be a lovely, charming young girl. On her sixteenth birthday, when
she was roaming about the castle, she came upon a secret room at the very top of the castle towers.
Curious, she wanted to help an old woman bent over a spinning wheel.

"Oh! What is this?” she cried as she had never seen it before. She pleaded with the woman, “Please do let
me try this as well”. But the minute she touched the needle of the spindle, she fell to the ground. The
witch’s spell come true.

With a heavy heart, the king ordered her to be taken to the grand room, where she would lie for many
years. The whole kingdom was sad for the sleeping beauty. The youngest fairy watched all of this and she
said with a wave of her hand, “Let the whole kingdom fall asleep with the princess so when is woken by
her prince, she will not be alone”. The moment she said all this, all the people and animals in the kingdom
fell asleep where they were. Everything stopped.
As the years passed by, a thick forest grew around the
palace and the kingdom was hidden. Exactly, hundred
years later, a handsome prince was passing through the
forest and he discovered the strange kingdom.

While exploring it, he was surprised to find the

sleeping beauty lying fast asleep and immediately fell
in love with her. “I want to know who she is? How
gentle and peaceful she looks!” he said. He leaned
down and kissed her. Instantly, the spell was lifted, the
princess and all the people awoke. It was joy and celebration all around. The prince and princess were
soon married and they lived happily ever after.
Little Red Riding Hood

Long ago, there lived a pretty girl who always wore a red cape with a hood. She was known as little red
riding hood. One day, she was going to visit her grandmother who stayed deep in the woods. Her mother
warned her from talking to strangers.

In the forest, lived a bad wolf. He saw red riding hood and wanted to
eat her up. He went and spoke to her and found out where she was
going. He decided to eat her grandmother first and then wait for her.
He reached grandmother’s house and gobbled her up whole. Then he
quickly wore her clothes and tucked himself into bed waiting for the
grand daughter.

When red riding hood arrived, she was surprised at her grand
mother’s big arms and ears and big teeth. The wolf laughed a wicked
laugh and pounced on her in a flash. Red riding hood was very scared
and screamed for help. A kind woodcutter was passing by the house,
he saw the big wolf trying to catch the little girl. He immediately hit
the wolf on his head with his axe.

The woodcutter and red riding hood cut open the wolf’s stomach and out came grandma. She hugged Red
Riding Hood with joy. The big bad wolf couldn’t hurt anyone ever again. From then on, red riding hood
remembered never to speak to strangers again.

Pinocchio
Long ago, an old carpenter named Gepetto carved a puppet in the shape of a boy and named it Pinocchio.
He wished the boy to be a real one. A fairy heard his words and fulfilled his wish. She added life to the
puppet.

But she wanted that if he was to be a real boy, he

must always be a good boy. Gepetto loved him
dearly, but Pinocchio was quite naughty and rarely
spoke the truth. As soon as he lied, his wooden nose
would grow long. He always promised to be a good
boy from the next time. But he soon forgot his word
and left the school with his friends to join a circus.
Now, he began to miss Gepetto.

One day, he heard that his father had been swallowed up by a huge whale. He immediately went to find
the whale. The whale swallowed him as well. Inside the whale’s belly, Pinocchio and Gepetto were so
happy to see each other. They made a plan to get out and began tickling the whale’s stomach. As soon as
the whale opened his mouth and sneezed, Pinocchio and Gepetto slipped out.

They reached home safely. The fairy was pleased with Pinocchio’s bravery and she turned him into a real
fleshed and blood boy. From that day, he was a very good boy and never missed school. The father and
son lived happily ever after.
Keong Mas (The Golden Snail)
Raden Putra and Dewi Limaran were husband and wife. They lived in a palace. Prince Raden Putra's
father was the king of the kingdom.

One day, Dewi Limaran was walking around in the palace garden. Suddenly she saw a snail. It was ugly
and disgusting. "Yuck!" said Dewi Limaran and then she threw it away into a river. She did not know that
the snail was actually an old and powerful witch. She could transform herself into anything. The witch
was angry to Dewi Limaran. The witch put a spell on her and changed her into a golden snail. The witch
then threw it away into the river.

The golden snail was drifting away in the river and got caught into a net. An old woman was fishing and
used her net to catch some fish. She was surprised to see a golden snail in her net. She took it and brought
it home. When the old woman woke up in the morning, she was surprised that the house was in the good
condition. The floor was mopped. And she also had food on the table. She was thinking very hard. "Who
did this to me? The person is very kind." It happened again and again every morning.

The old woman was very curious. One night she decided to stay up late. She was peeping from her room
to know who cooked for her. Then, she could not believe what she saw. The golden snail she caught in
the river turned into a beautiful woman. The old woman approached her. "Who are you, young girl?" "I
am Dewi Limaran, Ma'am. A witch cursed me. I can change back as a human only at night," explained
Dewi Limaran. "The spell can be broken if I hear the melody from the holy gamelan," continued Dewi
Limaran. The old woman then rushed to the palace. She talked to Prince Raden Putra about her wife.
Prince Raden Putra was so happy. He had been looking for
his wife everywhere.

He then prayed and meditated. He asked the gods to give

him the holy gamelan. He wanted to break the witch's
spell. After several days praying and meditating, finally
Gods granted his wish. He immediately brought the holy
gamelan to the old woman's house. He played it
beautifully. And then amazingly the golden snail turned
into the beautiful Dewi Limaran. The couple was so happy
that they could be together again. They also thanked the
old woman for her kindness. As a return, they asked her to
stay in the palace.
The Legend of Crying Stone

In a small village, a girl lives with her mother. The girl is very beautiful. Everyday she puts make-up and
wears her best clothes. She doesn't like to help her mother work in a field. The girl is very lazy.

One day, the mother asks the girl to accompany her to go to the market to buy some food. At first the girl
refuses, but the mother persuades her by saying they are going to buy new clothes. The girl finally agrees.
But she asks her mother to walk behind her. She doesn't want to walk side by side with her mother.

Although her mother is very sad, she agrees to walk behind her daughter. On the way to the market,
everybody admires the girl's beauty. They are also curious. Behind the beautiful girl, there is an old

She prays to God to punish her daughter. God

answers her prayer. Slowly, the girl's leg turns into
stone. The process continues to the upper part of
the girl's body. The girl is very panicky.

"Mother, please forgive me!" she cries and ask her

mother to forgive her.

But it's too late. Her whole body finally becomes a

big stone. Until now people still can see tears
falling down the stone. People then call it the

of jewellery. She also had many servants working for her. Nyai Bagendit was also known for her bad attitude.
She did not like to help others.

Whenever the villagers needed some money, they borrowed the money from her. However, when they returned
it, the villager had to pay double. If they were not able to return the debt, Nyi Bagedit would ask her servants
to take the villagers belongings. Nyai Bagendit also hated beggars. She thought that beggars were lazy people.
She never felt sorry to any beggars coming to her house.

So, when the old beggar came to her house, Nyai Bagendit immediately to ask her to go.

"Go away you lazy old woman! Go out of my house!" said Nyai Bagendit.

You have anything but you never help other people. You are not grateful to God. Wait for the punishment from
God. You will be punished!"The old beggar then left Nyai Bagedit's house.

"Ha ha ha! You are right. I'm the richest person here. So, no one can punnish me, not even God can punish
me!" Nyai Bagendit was very arrogant.

Nyai Bagendit then went back to her big house. Not long after that, an earhquake happened. Her house fell
down.

Nyai Bagendit cried for help. "Help me!

Somebody please help me!"

But nobody listened her crying for help. Nobody

in the village felt the earthquake. amazingly, the
earthquake only happened in Nyai Bagendit's
house. The land was opened. It was so big that
the entire Nyai Bagendit's house, and all her
wealth were gone. The villagers just wathes
what happened to Nyai Bagendit and her house.
They were amazed. They knew that God
punished Nyai Bagendit for behaving badly and
never helped other people. Slowly, the place
where Nyai Bagedit's house stood became lake.
Since then, people named the lake as Situ
Bagendit It means Lake of Bagendit.
The Swan Lake
Once upon a time, there was a handsome Prince. His name
was Siegfried. One day, he went hunting in the forest and
came upon a beautiful lake. He saw many white swans
playing in the water. As it became night, the swans went
ashore and one by one changed into beautiful girls.
One of the girls was much more beautiful than the others.
The Prince couldn’t help but approach her and say, “I’m
Prince Siegfried. If you have any trouble, it’s my wish to be
of assistance to you.” “I’m Princess Odette. My servant
girls and I were put under a curse by the sorcerer Rothbart.
That is why we became swans.”
When the Prince looked at Princess Odette, his heart was
moved with pity for her. “Rest assured. I’ll go look for this
Sorcerer Rothbart and try to break the spell. I’ll take revenge for you!” The Prince was determined.
Suddenly, an owl flew out from the dark of the forest and began attacking the Prince. It was Sorcerer
Rothbart who had changed into an owl. There was not a hint of fear on the Prince’s face. After a few
rounds with the owl, he had chased him away. Odette was very appreciative of him.
“Beautiful Princess, how can I break the curse?” he asked. “Only if you publicly ask for my hand in
marriage will the sorcerer’s curse be broken and I can return to normal,” said the Princess bashfully. The
Prince grabbed the Princess’ hand and said, “That’s easy. Tomorrow evening, my mother is holding a
banquet for me to choose a bride. I’ll ask for your hand in marriage in front of everybody.”
The next day, a ball was held in the palace. Many pretty girls attended the ball, but the Prince considered
no one but Princess Odette. As the ball was about to end, a noble, beautiful Princess ran into the palace
from outside. The Prince excitedly grabbed her hand and announced before everybody, “Princess Odette
is the girl of my dreams. I’ve decided to marry her.”
“Prince, that girl is Rothbart’s daughter. I’m the real Princess Odette!” said the girl outside the palace
entrance. The Prince turned around and looked, “Yes, you’re Princess Odette. How could I ever forget
your most beautiful yet sad countenance.” The fake Odette completely changed back into her evil self.
“Haha! Too late! You’ve already asked me to marry you. My father’s curse will never be lifted.”
Suddenly, Sorcerer Rothbart appeared. Infuriated, the Prince pulled out his sword. In a flash, he lunged
toward the sorcerer and with one stroke stabbed him in the throat. The sorcerer fell over dead in a pool of
blood. “Now, I’ll never be able to change back to normal!” Princess Odette overridden with despair ran
over to a cliff. She jumped head first into Swan Lake. When the Prince saw his beloved fall off the cliff,
his heart was shattered and jumped in after her.
Before long, the sun came out and it was daylight. Strangely, the girl servants didn’t change into swans.
Tears fell from their eyes as they said, “The Prince and Princess sacrificed their lives in exchange for our
freedom.” Suddenly, a miracle occurred. The Prince and Princess Odette came up out of the water. The
Prince’s love for the Princess had deeply moved god. Thus god not only removed the curse but also saved
them from the water. The Prince brought the Princess back to the castle and they lived happily ever after.
