Engineer’s representative. The prepared drawing along with the traffic

movement / diversion (if any) will be submitted to the Engineer for their
approval for individual Bridges.

Confirmatory boring may be done at Minor Bridge locations as directed by

Engineer to ascertain the safe bearing capacity (SBC) of the soil. The soil
investigation will be carried out from specialized agency and reports will
be submitted to the Engineer for their review and design.

4.1.2 Dewatering
If water table is met with during excavation, attempts will be made to keep
excavated pits dry against seepage and/or rain water accumulation by
bailing or surface pumping and by creating diversion channels. Where
high water table is met i.e. water table is met above the foundation level,
dewatering may be done by well point system.

4.1.3 Excavation

Foundation for Bridge shall be excavated true to the lines and grade as
shown on the drawing. Care shall be taken to prevent the side collapse
and damage. Minor dismantling (if required) of existing Bridge structures
will be carried out using hand tools, jack hammers fitted with compressor.
Excavated earth shall be set aside if it is suitable for reuse as backfilling
material. The width of excavation at the bottom and at the top will be
decided by the ENGINEER considering the material encountered.

Excavation will be taken up by means of excavator cum loader or

manually as per site requirement. After excavation upto founding level the
PCC bottom levels will be checked.

The earthwork in excavation will be carried out as per drawing and

technical specifications Clause 304.

4.1.4 Construction of Structure

Concrete: Concrete shall be produced using Automatic / computerised

Batching Plant of approved capacity and ready mix concrete will be
transported to site using Transit Mixers and poured in the Bridge
components by using concrete pump or any conventional methods like
chutes, etc. to avoid segregation of concrete or as directed by the
Engineer. After placing of concrete, it will be vibrated to maintain required
degree of homogeneity and compacted and leveled to required line and
level using diesel/ electric vibrators of needle or plate type to the entire
satisfaction of Engineer-incharge and requirement at site.

(a) Lean Concrete: PCC of required grade and of approved mix design
shall be provided as per drawing or as directed by the ENGINEER
confirming to Clause 2100 of Technical specification.

(b) Foundation Concrete: Foundation concrete true to required

dimension and shape shall be laid continuously up to the location of
construction joint shown on the drawing or as directed by the Engineer.
The concrete shall be cured by water sprinkling, wet hessian cloths or
ponding of entire surface for not less than 14 days from the date of placing
of concrete.

After sufficient curing of the PCC, the reinforcement fabricated as per the
bar bending schedule will be placed. The clean steel formwork of required
sizes will be fixed by nut bolting to each other and supported with the
props to maintain the structural dimension of foundation/ raft.

(c) Construction of Wing Wall, Abutment, Deck slab/ T-Beam and

other ancillary works: Wing Wall, Abutment, Deck slab and other
ancillary works shall be constructed in accordance with details shown on
the drawing. After finishing the concrete of Foundation/ Raft, the proper
construction joint will be prepared without loosening the aggregate. The
reinforcement of substructures will be fixed, lapping to the raft
reinforcement.

For construction of deck slab/ T-Beam, the pipe jacks, props staging will
be installed resting on sufficient harden concrete of foundation/ raft. The
soffit formwork will be fixed to the required height.

The slab will be cast flat and the cross slope in carriageway shall be
maintained by providing Bituminuous Macadam and subsequently laying
of DBM & BC over the slab.

Wearing coat shall be provided as per the drawings after the slab has
been cast and the surface shall be kept rough but true to lines and levels
before the concrete has hardened.

(d) Form Work: The formwork will be made preferably with steel.
Formwork plate sizes will be workout and fabricated for easy and multiple
uses. Forms shall be made sufficiently rigid by the use of ties and bracing
to prevent any displacement or sagging between supports. It shall be
strong enough to withstand all pressure and vibration during placing of
concrete. The formwork shall be so removed as not to cause any damage
of concrete structure, confirming to Clause 1500 of Technical
Specification.
