Computer Assisted Learning

Computer assisted learning uses computers as tools to enhance the learning process. It allows for dense storage of educational materials that can be quickly accessed. Computers also enable multimedia, logic functions for feedback, and tracking of learner performance. Developing computer assisted learning involves choosing topics, deciding the cognitive level, selecting a learning mode like tutorial or simulation, and validating the materials with peers. While it has benefits, computer assisted learning also has limitations like being better for developing cognitive skills rather than other domains and having high development costs.

COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING

INTRODUCTION

Computer is the very important device in our day to day life. Now days with out computer
we can’t do anything. Computer is occupied the important part in human beings life and all
work areas. Computer assisted learning is the one of the most effective teaching aid in
nursing education.

DEFENITION

A computer is defined as an electronic equipment which can store information and date
which can be retrieved from it as and when required.

COMPUTER AS A TOOL OF LEARNING

Computer can be made to assist learning in many ways since it is capable of :

 Dense storage of data in an organized form,e.g.a large textbook could be

stored in a classified manner on a 9cm disk.
 Quick access to the database in millisecond :The 300,000 pages on a CD-
ROOM can be searched in seconds for word occurrences.
 Multimedia capability:The new generation of multimedia computers add
sound ,animation 3 dimension and video to the text.
 Logic function which can compare learner’s responses and gives appropriate
feedback and reinforcement.
 Ability to keep track of the learner’s performance ,award marks and gives
instant feedback of evalution.

PROCESS OF COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING

 Choose a relevant topic .

 Decide the cognitive level of the students, aimed by the
module,viz.knowledge,or problem-solving .
 Decide the computer assisted learning (Cal) mode to be used .
 Develope CAL sequence in the form of “frames.”
 I-Frame or indroductory frame gives directions to the learner.
 L-Frame or learning frame presents the matter to be learnt.
 T-Frame or test frame tests the learners and gives appropriate feedback.
 Privalidate the CAL by sharing them with peers and students and get
feedback.Too easy ,rigid, difficult or boring parts need to be revised.
MODS OF COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING (CAL)

A varity of modes are possible giving a teacher much flexibility in using CAL
effectively .They include;

 Drill and practice mode: In this, the students learn facts and memorize them by drill
method,e.g. using an MCQ bank for drill and practice. This method is useful for slow
learnears.
 Tutorial method :Here, a well structured programmed learning united (or CAL
module) provides interactive learning. This mode ,if used well ,could well result in
90% relation of the content compared with 30% relation after the best lecture. In
tutorial method ,a module lesson consist of :

1.Presentation of content in a structured way.

2.Task- prescription to elicit the learners response.

3.Instent feedback and reinforcement to the learner.

 Laboratory mode: Computer could be programmed to simulate a variety

of biological processes to supplement or do away with laboratory
experiments .The learner explores various option and learns by
inference.
 Case-simultation mode:A variety of diagnostic and therapeutic
problems and the patient management type could be effectively
computerized. This has proved quite useful in learning problem-solving,
the highest cognitive domain.
 Consultant role: ‘Expert’ programs have been devised, which could
bring the expertise of a consultant within the easy reach of a primary
care nurse.
 Manager of educational process: computer-based management
Information System (MIS) could keep track of student performance and
offer suitable advice to make the educational process more effective.
Other than this, with the introduction of the CD-ROM and the Internet,
computers have become a store house of information. Several sources of
reference like MEDLINE and POPLINE are available on the Internet
and CD-ROM. This provides information on any subject that a teacher
may desire. Internet also provides a platform for teachers to exchange
notes, raise queries, and receive answers.

LIMITATIONS OF CAL METHOD

Inherent limitations: CAL could be very effective on developing cognitive

domain alone, especially problem-solving skill and has a very limited
application to the other two domains.

Content: All topics and subjects are not suited for CAL eg; literature only topics
they are logical or that could be well structured are suitable.

Programme development: Developing a CAL module is tedious and time

cosuming process.

Faculty involvement is limited.

Evaluation of the use of CAL is not standardised

Cost effectiveness: it involves high cost to develop and utilize a programme.

Developed educational programme may not be able to keep pace with the rapid
advancement in technology. \
SUMMARY

Till now we discussed about the computer assisted learning. In that we discussed the
introduction, definition, computer as a tool of learning, process of computer assisted learning,
modes of computer assisted learning, limitations of computer assisted learning.

CONCLUSION

Computers are being used widely for class room instruction. For class room instruction, the
computer can be used as a substitute as well as aid to the teacher. The class room uses of
computers include individualisation of instruction, display of information , evaluation of
students and illustration of abstract idea by computer graphics and diagrams.
