CE 206 ASSIGNMENT -1

1. The undisturbed soil at a borrow pit has a water content of 15%, void ratio of 0.60 and specific gravity
of solids 2.70. The soil from the borrow pit is to be used for the construction of an embankment with a
finished volume of 40,000 cu m. The specification for the embankment requires a water content of
18% and dry unit weight of 1.76g/cc. Calculate the quantity of soil required to be excavated from
borrow pit for the construction of the embankment. What would be its weight? What is the weight of
the embankment soil? (Ans: 80960 ton and 83072 ton)
2. The in situ unit weight of a medium to coarse sand used as subgrade for a highway was 16 kN/m 3. It
was decided to improve that soil by mechanical stabilization. When 5.5 kN of a mixture of dry sand
and silt was added to 1m3 of this subgrade, the volume was increased by 20%. How much reduction in
porosity of the soil was achieved? Assume average G s as 2.67. (Ans: 7.3%)
Further, 1.5 kN of clay, at a moisture content of 10% was added to the above mixture such that no
further increase in the volume of the subgrade resulted. Determine the further reduction in the porosity
that this addition of clay brought about. Assume Gs of the clay particles as 2.55. (Ans: 4.6%)
3. Prove that;

Degree of saturation  S r  
w
 w 1  w  1

 Gs
4. In one particular test, 250 gm of moist soil was placed in a pycnometer, and the pycnometer was filled
with water and was found to have a weight of 3 kg. The weight of the pycnometer filled with water
alone was 2.87 kg. Determine the moisture content of the soil assuming G s = 2.65. (Ans: 19.73%)
5. The following observations were taken in a pycnometer test;
Weight of pycnometer = 580.2 gm; Weight of pycnometer + dry soil = 781.25 gm;
Weight of pycnometer + dry soil + water = 1588 gm; Weight of pycnometer + water = 1458 gm
Determine the specific gravity of soil solids (Gs). (Ans: 2.83)
6. Soil is to be excavated from a borrow pit which has a density of 1.75 g/cc and water content of 12%.
The specific gravity of soil particles is 2.7. Water was added to the soil and compacted such that the
final water content becomes 18% and dry density 1.65 g/cc. For 1000 m 3 of soil in fill, estimate (i)
quantity of soil to be excavated from pit (ii) amount of water to be added.
(Ans: 1056 m3; 99m3)
Also determine the void ratios of the soil in borrow pit and fill. (Ans: ebp = 0.728; efill = 0.636)
