Methods and Procedure: Subject of The Study

This chapter outlines the research methodology used in the study. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 17 grade 7 students at Saint Michael Academy, comprising 8 males and 9 females. Slovin's formula was used to determine the sample size. The questionnaire was validated through testing with teachers and students. Statistical analysis of the data included frequency counts, percentages, and weighted means to analyze responses on Likert scales.

Chapter 3

Methods and Procedure

This chapter presents the research methodology; Subject of the Study,

Sampling Technique, Procedure of Data Gathering and Treatment of Data.

Research Methodology

This study is a descriptive method of research employing a

questionnaire. The descriptive research provided facts on which professional

judgement may be used. This involved the systematic presentation of data

to give clear picture of the research or population, practices and situations.

The choice of the research methodology was made due to its

appropriateness to the objective of the study. This study identifies first the

different aspects of what influences learners’ motivation for learning English

grammar. Secondly, it reveals the strategies that boost the interest of the

respondents towards grammar instruction. And lastly, it dealt with the

extrinsic and intrinsic motivations of the respondents in the acquisition of

grammar skills. In doing so, researchers could already assess how the

respondents value their learning with the English grammar and how their

English teachers play integral role with it.

Researchers decided to have several students answering the questions

for them to easily see the patterns of the study, such as how and why

1
learners think about grammar as they do and to get the opinions of many

people. The amount of time was an important factor in selecting the number

of respondents as subjects of the study.

SUBJECT OF THE STUDY

This study utilized the questionnaires to grade 7 students of Saint

Michael Academy. The subject of this study was composed of 17 grade 7

students; 8 males and 9 females coming from 2 sections. Table 1 shows the

tabular presentation and percentage of the respondents.

Respondents Number of Percentage of the

Respondents Respondents
Male 8 47%

Female 9 53%

Total 17 100%

Table 1: Subject of the Study

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

To get the proportional number of respondents, the researchers made

use of the Slovin’s Formula in selecting the number of respondents. The

Formula is shown below.

2
n= N/(1+(N*e 2))

Where ;

n =number of samples

N=total population

e =margin error

n = 51

N= Confidence level =98 %( e =0.02)

n =51/ (1+(51*0.02*2))

  = 51/ (1+2.04)

  = 51/3.04

  = 16.77= 17 (sample size )

Validation of Questionnaire

For validity and reliability, the researchers also utilized the questionnaires

subjected for their English teachers as respondents and 2 students coming

from two sections for open-ended type of questionnaires and interviews.

They were not included as the actual respondents of the study. After the

pre-testing their suggestions were considered in the final draft or copy of the

questionnaires

Statistical Treatment

Give the fact that this study is a descriptive type of research; the

statistical tools used were the following:

A. Frequency Count

     This was used in the determination of respondents who rated the

items according to their frequencies which is done by a one by one counting

B. Percentage Technique

This was utilized as a tool by which the relative proportion of the

value taken from a sub group was determined by dividing the

frequency of the item condition to the total number of cases and

multiplies it by 100. The formula is shown below.

4
P=for/n*100

P=percentage

f=frequency

n=total number of cases

100=constant

C. Weighted Mean

 This was the tool used to find out the weighted mean of each item.

Wm=Efx/n

Where:

 Wm =weighted mean

 E= summation of fx

f=frequency of data

X =scale

n= total number of respondents

Likert scale of 5

1=Most Influential

2=A lot influential

3=Somewhat Influential

5
4=A little bit Influential

5=Not Influential

Likert scale of 5

1=No, the statement is not motivating at all

2=The statement is little bit motivating

3=The statement is somewhat motivating

4=The statement is a lot motivating

5=Yes, the statement is definitely the most motivating
