Course Description:
Architectural Design I/II is a course in which students express themselves visually and are able to showcase
their creativity. Instruction is given in the following areas: elements of design, architectural history, sketching, and
model construction. This course gives students confidence in organizing and utilizing ideas in new and useful
creations, and reinforces concepts and ideas learned in mathematics, art, and social science. Students are guided
through a series of projects using technical and mechanical drawing skills. This competency-based course prepares
students for entry-level positions or further training in Architectural Design. Integrated throughout the course are
career preparation standards, which include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem
solving, workplace safety, technology, and employment literacy.
Advanced Architectural Design III/IV is a course in which the students express themselves visually and are
able to showcase their creativity. After presenting basic concepts in Architectural Design, this advanced course goes
more deeply into the elements of artistic design, environmental design, architectural model making, civil
engineering or 3D development. Students are required to complete a major project of their own design and submit it
for further review by entering an approved competition, or to a licensed architect/engineer.

Organization:
This is a lecture-lab course in which the instructor presents topics and lead discussions with demonstration and
individual/group instruction. Assessments will be made on daily work, the ability to problem solve, reflective
writing, observance of work procedures and attitude. Students will have written homework synthesizing material
from class, developing critical thinking and study skills.
Course Objectives:
Architectural Design I/II
1. Develop and expand aesthetic perception.
2. Develop a strong academic foundation in elements of design
3. Develop a historic perspective of architecture and social environments
4. Master laboratory techniques and concepts that are essential in design
5. Develop knowledge of historical and cultural developments and their influence on modern architecture
6. Understand that architectural design reflects, records, and shapes history and plays a role in very culture
7. Develop and expand visual arts knowledge and skills to express architectural ideas imaginatively
8. Acquire artistic knowledge, perception, and technical skills to express and communicate ideas graphically
9. Learn techniques in approaching solutions to architectural problems
10. Develop a basis for making informed, aesthetic judgments
11. Develop information and skill in the graphic presentation of ideas
12. Develop an awareness of careers in the visual arts.

Advanced Architectural Design III/IV

1. Develop creative ideas and skills through visual arts, solving design problems, using sketching, line
elements, value, shape, form, color, and texture
2. Identify the three different ways to draw and represent three-dimensional models
3. Develop presentation skills to show different methods used to present architectural designs to non-
technical personnel
4. Develop an overview of basic scientific modular principals upon which construction systems are based
5. Develop design considerations for effective solar orientation, efficient energy use, ergonomics, and
ecological planning
6. Develop an understanding of architectural careers and visual art application in those careers
7. Develop three-dimensional renderings and models using computer aided design techniques
8. Understand the significance of how historical and traditional designs are reflected in today’s architectural
designs
9. Develop a journal based on research, analyzing the works of historical architects’ distinctive styles and
their contributions to society
Grading Plan:
Course work will be weighted as follows: Grades will be given according to the following
Class Participation 10% schedule:
Chapter Review 10% A 90--100%
Class Work 30% B 80--89%
Quizzes and Tests 10% C 70--79%
Projects 25% D 60--69%
Portfolio 15% F 59% and below
TOTAL 100%

Assignments/projects are generally posted to the instructor’s web site. If a student misses class for any reason,
please check the site, there will usually be useful information, so that the student does not fall behind.
Late work will not be accepted for full credit. A late penalty of 10% per day will be assessed against work
turned in late. All assignments are expected to be complete and turned in, but only work that is turned in on
time will be eligible for full credit. It is your responsibility to use class time effectively. If you are absent it is
your responsibility to make up any work. You have two (2) class periods from the date of your excused
absence to turn in any missed work.
You will receive an NTI (Not Turned In) score for any work that is not turned in that will be changed to
NS (No Score) after two class periods. You will not be given an opportunity to make this work up.
Classroom Rules of Conduct:
1. Students need to be in the classroom, seated ready to work when the tardy bell rings or expect to be marked
tardy.
2. Consumable items will be replaced as needed unless the use become excessive or if the student become
negligent in taking care of items given.
3. Food and beverages (including water) are not permitted in the classroom. This includes lunches, drinks,
candy, etc. whether open or not. IN OTHER WORDS, IF YOU HAVE FOOD and/or DRINK, IT NEEDS
TO STAY IN YOUR BACKPACK.
4. Everyone enjoys music, however, students will not be allowed to use personal music players in class or use
the CD drives in the computers to play music. Any student insisting on using a personal music device or
CD during class will have it confiscated, have a referral written and may retrieve it from the Building
Assistant Principal.
5. Cellular phone usage is not allowed during instructional time. Any student insisting on using a cellular
phone during class will have it confiscated, have a referral written and may retrieve it from the Building
Assistant Principal. If a parent needs to speak to a student in the case of an emergency, please call 925/625-
5900, state that it is an emergency and the call will be connected to the classroom.

obtain said supplies. If obtaining the supplies causes a hardship I will notify either the instructor or
Associate Principal.
ƒ NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE LAB (THIS INCLUDES WATER).
ƒ Cellular phone usage is not allowed during instructional minutes, if parents need to reach a student, even in
the case of an emergency, they should call the school at 925/625-5900, state that it is an emergency and ask
to be connected to the I-102 classroom.
ƒ Sufficient time is given in class for students to complete the assigned tasks; homework may/will be
required if a student falls behind on the assigned drawings or if class time is missed due to absence.
ƒ There will be no (or very limited) extra credit available. Students need to do the work when it is assigned to
the best of their ability. If extra credit is offered it will not replace assigned work, but will usually be in the
form of due dates moved up.
