TMC Guidelines for January for Citrus Growers in Vidarbha

Technology Mission on Citrus for Vidarbha has completed 8 years successfully. Launched on 4th Jan,
2007 Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture Under Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India has
received very good response from citrus growers. Later on the Mission was extended to Marathwada in sweet
orange belt and to adjacent Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. The mission has the mandate of
production of disease free planting material, training of extension officers of Dept. of Agriculture, training of
citrus growers in village level and demonstration of citrus technology and rejuvenation of declined orchards.
In a span of 8 years the TMC for Vidarbha has trained more than 27332 citrus growers and 1328 extension
officers. Besides, it has 25 demonstration sites on latest citrus production technology. TMC has announced a
schedule of various practices to be followed during January month for the Citrus growers of Vidarbha.
 The water requirement in this month is 7-30, 44-72, and 82-102 litres per day for tree of age 1-4, 5-7, 8
years old and above, respectively should be met with drip system. Use double ring method if there is
no drip system. Mulching should be done in tree basin if not done earlier. For mulching grass, wheat
husk near the tree trunk can be utilized start irrigation to the orchard for initiation of Ambia bahar as
per the type of soil & stress received by the trees.
 Infestation of citrus pyslla occurs with the outburst of new leaves in Ambia bahar. The pest can cause
100 per cent flower drop if not controlled. The pest causes “die back” and “Greening” disease in
affected trees causing “slow decline”. It can be controlled by spraying dimethoate 2 ml or acephate 2 g
or imidacloprid 0.5 ml per litre water at bud burst stage. Second spray should be carried after 10 days
interval. Change the pesticides in subsequent sprays.
 In case there is infestation of bark eating caterpillar then remove the wooden frass present in between
the joints of the tree trunk and inject dichlorovos (DDVP 76 EC) 0.1 per cent @ 5 ml per liter water in
the larval tunnel with the help of disposable syringe and cover larval tunnel with a cotton swab.
 Spray gibberallic acid 1.5 g with 1 kg urea in 100 litres water at the time of initiation of Ambia flush.
 Nursery owner should monitor the sprouting of buds on the root stocks budded in last month and spray
etion 2 ml in one litre water to protect against mite and thrips infestation.
 For controlling Phytophthora diseases scrap out gum oozing portion by sharp knife, wash with
potassium permaagnate solution (10 gms in one litre water) from the infected tree trunk and apply
Mefenoxam M Z - 68 (Metalaxyl M 4% + Mancozeb 64 % wp) or fosetyl-Al paste.
Dr. M. S. Ladaniya Mission Leader, TMC and Director CCRI has requested the citrus growers,
KVK’s and Agril. Extension officers of State and Zilla Parishad to follow the advice given by the TMC
experts. In case of any difficulty please contact Tel. No. 0712-2500325.

TMC Guideline for April for citrus Growers in Vidarbha

Technology Mission on Citrus for Vidarbha & Marathawada, Mission for Integrated
Development of Horticulture Under Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India operational at Central
Citrus Research Institute (CCRI), Nagpur has announced a schedule of various practices to be
followed during April month for the Citrus growers of Vidarbha.
 Irrigation should be continued to maintain the fruit set of Ambia fruits. Frequency of the
irrigation should be increased at 6-7 days interval due to ensuing summer season and high
temperature.
In Nagpur mandarin and sweet orange one year old tree should be given twice the
amount and 3 yrs old tree given thrice the amount. 8 year old tree should be given 163
litres/day/tree while 10 yrs and above aged tree should be irrigated with 204 litres /
day/tree.
In acid lime(lemon)one year tree should be given 11 litres water/day/tree, 2 yrs tree be
given 16 litres water/day/ tree, 8 yrs tree be given 65 litres/day/ tree while 10 yrs and
above tree should be given 100 litres of water every day.
 During summer months mulching around tree trunk up to 5-10 cm should be done with wheat
straw, paddy straw or uprooted weeds so that, evaporation of water due to high temperature can
be minimized which helps in reducing fruit crop.
 Fertilizer should be applied at the rate of 108g urea or 250g ammonium sulphate and 157g l.c.
single superphosphate along with 25g zinc sulphate, 25g ferrous sulphate and 25g manganese
sulphate for one year old plant. For 2,3, and 4 years trees the rate should be two, three and four
times of the quantity recommended for one year tree. Apply 20 to 25 kg farm yard manure to
each tree in the soil. These fertilizers and FYM should be applied along the periphery of trees
with care that fertilizers are applied to moist soil only.
 During April month, incidence of bark eating caterpillar is commonly seen, more menacing on
old orchards. To control the pest, remove the wooden frass and then inject 5-10 ml of
dichlorovos prepared by mixing 3-4 ml of DDVP 76 EL in one liter water with the help of
disposable syringe and cover the larval tunnel with a cotton wool.
 Incidence of mites takes an alarming shape during this month. To combat this pest, spray of
dicofol 1.8EC @ 2 ml or propargite 1 ml per litre of water may be sprayed. Repeat second
spray after 15 days interval.
 For controlling citrus mealy bugs, destroy the ant’s nests and spray Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml
/ litre of water or dichlorovos @ 2.5 ml / litre of water on the tree foliage and trunk.
 The dead wood on the citrus trees should be kept pruned, about 2cm below the dead portion
followed by spraying with carbendazim fungicide at the rate of one g per litre of water.
 To check fruit drop during Ambia bahar, spray of solution containing 1.5g 2,4-D or Gibberelic
acid 100g benomyl and 1kg urea dissolved in 100 liters of water is suggested. The interval
spray may be reduced to 15 days if an excessive fruit drop continues. Regular monitoring of
irrigation should be done.
 For nurseries, soil preparation has to be done by spreading one part of virgin fertile soil, one
part of sand and one part of FYM on concrete floor raised up to 1.5ft in height. Drench the bed
completely with water and cover it up with 100 micron thick polythene sheet. The sides of the
sheet should be sealed to avoid vapour loss.
Dr. M. S. Ladaniya, Mission Leader, TMC and Director, CCRI has requested the citrus
growers of Vidarbha to avail these advisaries released to press in the first week of every month
exclusively for the citrus growers under TMC. In case of any difficulty, growers should contact on

Under Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India operational at Central Citrus Research Institute (CCRI) , Nagpur
has announced a schedule of various practices to be followed during June month for the Citrus growers of
Vidarbha.
 For establishment of new orchard suitability of the soil needs to be examined. The soil depth should be
a minimum of 1 meter but equally high performance orchards can be established on soil depth
measuring even less than 1 meter provided precision based cultural practices including the fertilization
programme are adopted. The soil site should preferably be well drained, clay less than 60%, pH less
than 8.3, free calcium carbonate less than 12% and water table of the area more than 2 meters should
be selected.
 The pits excavated during the month of May may be filled up by a mixture containing 2 parts soil, one
part sand and 1 parts farmyard manure. In addition, add 1 kg Single super phosphate, 1 kg of neem
cake and 100 g Chloropyrifos powder in each pit.
 Nurseryman of citrus should start filling polythene bags with the mixture of garden soil, FYM and
sand. Proper perforation for water should be done on the bags adequately.
 In case trees on stress received rainfall during stress period chlormequat chloride a growth retardant at
the rate of 2 ml per liter of water should be sprayed on the trees. Second spray should be applied after
20 days.
 For increasing the fruit size of Ambia crop and if there is wide gap of more than a week between two
spells of rains spray potassium nitrate at the rate of 1.5 kg + 2, 4, D 1.5 gms per 100 litres of water.
 Irrigate the trees for taking Mrig bahar, if rains are inadequate or not commenced on time. Drip system
of irrigation can also be started to break the stress to the trees. To avoid water stagnation near the tree
trunk, level the soil around tree trunk. Drainage channels (trenching size : 30cm depth, 45 cm top width
and 30 cm bottom width) after each 2 rows of plants along the slope should be prepared to remove
excess water from the orchard in rainy season. The laterals of drip system should be wound up. After
monsoon starts the mulch from the tree basin should be removed.
 Apply Bordeaux paste on the tree trunks if not applied earlier to control Phytophthora disease on
citrus. Prepare the paste by mixing 1 kg lime and 1 kg copper sulphate in 5 litres water separately
overnight in a plastic container. Next day mix both the mixtures in another container so that the color
of the paste is sky blue. Test the mixture by dipping iron rod to see presence of copper coating. Apply
with paint brush on the tree trunk up to 24 inches from soil level. This paste should be applied within
12 hrs after mixing.
 During this month there is rapid spread of citrus canker hence the affected leaves, branches should be
pruned and burnt. Spray copper oxychloride 180 gm with streptocycline 6 gm in 60 litres of water
before the onset of the monsoon. Repeat the spray 3-4 times at an interval of 30 days.
 To check fruit drop of Ambia bahar spray the santra trees with 1.5 gms 2, 4-D or gibberelic acid (GA).
100 gms carbendazim 50 wp with 1 kg urea in 100 litres of water. Repeat the spray after 15 days if the
fruit drop continues.
 Citrus trees affected with Phytophthora, spray Mefenoxam M Z-68 (Metalaxyl 4 % + Mancozeb 64 %)
@ of 2.50 gm/ lit water as a preventive measure to control the disease.
 Incidence of Citrus Psylla on the new leaves of Mrig bahar can be managed by spray diamethoate 2 ml
or imidacloprid 0.5 ml or quinalphos 1 ml or acephate 1 g thiamethoxam 0.3 g in one liter of water.
Repeat second spray after 10-15 days interval.

schedule of various practices to be followed during August month for the Citrus growers of Vidarbha.
 Avoid water stagnation near the tree trunk. Stagnated water should be drained off through the drain,
already prepared. Rain water harvesting ponds should be dug at the low land of the orchard to collect
rain water. To reduce seepage losses spreading of plastic sheet at the base of the pond may be
undertaken. In case of heavy rains, surface open drains should be dug out in the lowlands of citrus
orchards.
 Clean the drains at frequent intervals.
 Remove water shoots from the trees.
 Keep the orchard free from weeds.
 Apply 108g Urea or 250 gms Ammonium sulphate, 157g single superphosphate and in addition along
with fertilizer apply 25g Zinc sulphate, 25g Ferrous sulphate and 25 g Manganese sulphate for one year
old tree. Apply twice the quantity for two year tree, three times for three year tree and four times for four
years and above trees. Fertilizer should be applied to the tree in moist soil condition. Adequate FYM
should be applied in soil.
 During this month there is rapid spread of citrus canker in Acid lime hence the affected leaves and
branches should be pruned and burnt. Spray Copper Oxychloride 180 gms with Streptocycline 6 gms in
60 liters of water.
 During this month there is likelihood of attack of phytopthora fungus on the fruit causing brown rot of
maturing ambia fruits. To control this two sprays of Mefenoxam MZ 68 (Mefenoxam 4 + Mencozeb 64)
2.5 gm + Carbendazim 1 g may be sprayed at 30 days interval.
 During this month citrus leaf eating caterpillar is active. The caterpillar of the pest is voracious feeder
causing severe defoliation of the plants. Initially the caterpillar is brownish black but later it becomes
green and robust. The pest can be effectively controlled by foliar spray of fenvalerate 2 ml or
cypermethrin 1 ml or fenitrothion 2 ml in one liter water.
 To check fruit drop of Ambia bahar spray the citrus tree with 1.5 gm 2, 4-D or Gibberelic Acid (GA) with 100 gms
Carbendazim and 1 kg Urea mixed in 100 liters of water.
 During the end of the month, there is attack of fruit sucking moth on the Ambia crop fruits. To control
the pest foliar application with neem oil @ 10 ml/l coinciding with colour breaking stage of fruits and
destroy all the fallen fruits by burying in the pit. Poison baiting with 10 ml malathion mixed with 100 g
jaggery and 100 ml mandarin juice in 900 ml water (two portion bottles per 25 trees). Burn moist leaves
of neem mixed with cow dung cake and place the same in different locations to fumigate the citrus
orchard. This practice will help to keep away from entering into the orchard.
Dr. M. S. Ladaniya Mission Leader, TMC and Director CCRI have requested the citrus
growers, KVK’s and Agril. Extension officers of State and Zilla Parishad to follow the advice given by
the experts. In case of any difficulty please contact Tel. No. 0712-2500325 or E-mail:

announced a schedule of various practices to be followed during May month for the Citrus growers of
Vidarbha.
Under Prime Minister Package the Technology Mission on Citrus for Vidarbha & Marathawada, was
launched under National Horticulture Mission (NHM), Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India and operational
at NRCC campus, Amravati Road, Nagpur. TMC has announced a schedule for the month of May for benefit
of citrus growers, Krishi Viygan Kendras and State Agriculture Extension officers in Vidarbha.
 Irrigation should be continued to maintain the fruit set of Ambia bahar. Frequency of the irrigation
should be maintained at 4-5 days interval during the high (summer) temperature regime which is likely
to touch 470C in this month. If possible drip irrigation method should be followed for efficient utilization
of water. Besides, black polythene sheet of 100 micron thickness or any organic mulch (grass / straw)
should be spread around the tree trunk to reduce water evaporation.
 Give water stress to tree for preparing them for the Mrig bahar in June.
 In case a new orchard of citrus is to be established then dig the pits of size (2.5 ft x 2.5 ft x 2.5ft) at 6 x 6
meter spacing for Nagpur Santra, Mosambi and acid lime and the pit should be kept exposed to solar
rays.
 Apply Bordeaux paste on the tree trunk upto a height of 24 inches by brush. For preparation of Bordeaux
paste dissolve 1 kg copper sulphate in 5 lit. water in a plastic bucket and 1 kg slaked lime in 5 litres
water in separate bucket leave it for overnight. Next day mix them together to make a paste. Apply the
paste on tree trunk with in 12 hours after mixing.
 If the citrus trees are showing oozing symptoms of gum then scrap the area with a sharp knife and apply
Metalaxyl MZ-72 or Fosetyl Al paste on it.
 Spraying and drenching with Metalaxyl MZ-72 @ 2.75g or Fosetyl A1, 2.5g in one litre water on the tree
for controlling Phytophthora.
 To check fruit drop in citrus crop spray the solution containing 1.5 gm 2, 4-D or gibberelic acid (GA),
100 g carbendazim 50 WP and 1 kg urea (1%) in 100 litres of water. Repeat the spray after 15 days if
fruit drop continues.
 The menace of bark eating caterpillar can be checked in this month by removing the wooden frass and
then injecting dichlorovos 76 EC 0.1% @ 5 ml in the larval tunnel with the help of disposable syringe or
pushing in the dichlorovos 76 EC 0.1% soaked cotton wool into the larval tunnel.

 For controlling citrus mealy bugs the basin around the tree trunk should be earthned up.wrap sticky band
by smearing with mobile oil around the tree trunk and destruction of ant’s nests should be done.
Spraying of chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml / litre of water or dichlorovos @ 2.5 ml / litre of water should
be done on the tree leaves and trunk.
 To control snails on citrus use metaldehyde pellets. Alternatively take straw of paddy or wheat, jaggery
or sugarcane mollasses, yeast and methomyl or Thiomethazim. In order to prepare poison bait dissolve 2
kg jaggery, 25 yeast in 10 litres water. Now add wheat or paddy husk and mix well and keep for
fermentation for 10 to 12 hrs. Thereafter add 100 g methomyl or 50g thiomethazim and spread it at the
base of citrus tree trunk in the evening throughout the entire orchard. Citrus snail will be attracted and
will die after feeding on such poison bait.
