Many job titles are made by adding an ending to a verb. You can add the endings -er, -or, -
ist.

Verb Ending Job Title

teach -er teacher, dancer, baker, waiter, farmer

act -or actor, conductor, professor, mayor, translator

cartoon -ist cartoonist, dentist, scientist, hair stylist

NOTE: There are some jobs which do NOT have endings added on. For example: chef, pilot,
nurse, salesperson.

You use the verb to be when you talk about job titles.

Examples:
• She is a conductor.
• He is a baker.
• They are scientists.
• I am a dancer.
