ABOUT THE STUDENT LEARNING PACKET

This packet is a 3-part learning material intended for discussions and assessments covering
prelim, midterm and final terms. A student enrolled in the course is required to have internet access
as this procedure utilizes the blended learning approach (synchronous and asynchronous). Grade is
obtained upon full accomplishment of tasks included in this packet.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Purposive Communication is about writing, speaking and presenting to different audiences for
various purposes. (CMO 20 s 2013). Purposive Communication is a three-unit course that develops
students’ communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intellectual awareness through
multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to a
multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips students with tools for critical evaluation of
a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to emphasize the
importance of conveying messages responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain
from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and their
future career as they compose and produce relevant oral, written, audio-visual and/or web-based
output for various purposes.

A. ORIENTATION: FLEXIBLE LEARNING

TERMINOLOGIES

 For the purpose of this course, the term flexible learning refers to a design on how to create and
deliver learning interventions in a teaching-learning environment using a combination of the
synchronous and asynchronous procedures.

 Synchronous learning refers to a learning procedure that is supported by media such as video
conferencing and chat where real time facilitated sessions take place. The ability of learners to
actively participate in a simulated live online discussion is enhanced.

 Asynchronous learning refers to a learning procedure that allows learners respond to learning
requirements without having to comply to real time log in to sessions. This further allows learners
ample time to accomplish tasks on a self-paced learning mode.
 G Suite is a suite of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools. It comprises Account,
Gmail, Drive, Classroom, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Chat, Meet, Sites, Groups, YouTube,
Photos, Vaults, Hangouts, Forms, Keep, Jamboard, Cloud Sea, Collections, Cloud Print, and
others.

 A Google Account is a username and password that can be used to log in to consumer Google
applications.

 A Gmail account is a free Google account with an email address that ends in @gmail.com.

 Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google.

 Google Classroom Google Classroom is a free application designed to help teacher and
students to communicate. The application can be utilized to organize and manage tasks,
assignments, exercises and other course-related activities. It is a platform that ties together
Google’s G Suite tools such as Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar,

 Google Docs is a free Web-based application in which documents and spreadsheets can be
created, edited and stored online. Files can be accessed from any computer with an Internet
connection and a full-featured Web browser. Google Docs is a part of a comprehensive package
of online applications offered by and associated with Google.

 Google Sheets is a free web-based program for creating and editing spreadsheets. Google
Sheets, along with Google Docs and Google Slides, is a part of what Google calls Google
Drive. It's similar to how Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint are each
individual parts within Microsoft Office.

 Google Calendar is a time-management and scheduling calendar service developed by Google.

 Chat is "an intelligent communication app for teams that take direct messaging in Hangouts and
evolves it"

 Google describes Meet as "a video meeting experience with one goal: make joining meetings
effortless". The company wanted to improve Hangouts to make it easier and faster for people start
and join video conferences.

 Google Hangouts is a communications platform that combines video calling, voice calling and
text-based messaging into a single service. It is the successor to several other Google services,
including Google+ Hangouts (video chat), Google+ Messenger (messaging) and Google Talk
(VoIP). It is similar to Microsoft Skype and Facebook Messenger.

 Face-to-Face Group Interaction - Google Hangouts focuses on "face-to-face-to-face" group


interaction as opposed to one-on-one video chats, and it utilizes sophisticated technology to
seamlessly switch the focus to the person currently chatting. The standard version of Hangouts
allows up to 10 individuals to participate in conversations at the same time, and the Work and
Education versions allow up to 25 participants. Many large enterprises use Hangouts for meetings
or to enable collaboration among remote teams.

 Google Forms is a survey administration app that is included in the Google Drive office suite
along with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Forms features all of the
collaboration and sharing features found in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
1. Academic honesty, as expected of every student, is important to the process of education and to
upholding high ethical standards. Acts of cheating, plagiarism, inappropriate use of technology, or
any other kind of unethical behavior, may subject the student to necessary academic disciplinary
measures and penalties including dismissal.
2. All work required for submission for purposes of evaluation in a course, including journals, tests,
term papers, position papers, must represent only the work of the student unless certain
indications like pertaining to group or dyadic activity is otherwise stipulated.
3. Materials cited and/or taken from the work of others, and used as reference and literary
supplement must be acknowledged. Particular materials submitted to fulfill requirements in one
course may not be submitted in another course without prior approval of the instructor(s). It is a
thrust that students be encouraged to practice ingenuity in producing outputs.

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS
1. Students enrolled in the subject are expected to attend each and every scheduled meeting and to
be present for the full class period. Absenteeism and tardiness, regardless of cause, are a threat
to academic achievement. These cases will be addressed accordingly.
2. A student who is absent from a class is responsible, nevertheless, for all material covered during
the class period. The student is also subject to appropriate consequences if a test, quiz, recitation,
homework assignment, or any other activity falls on the day of absence unless the student is
granted an excused absence. Excused absences may be granted to students who participate in
extra-curricular activities, however, due process is observed.

COURSE PORTFOLIO
All tasks and major exams and evidences of performance assessments are to be compiled by
the students as part of their portfolio and must be submitted to the instructor before the end of the
semester as part of the assessment.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Technical requirements for completing Distance and Online Education classes include:
1. Student – provided personal computer.

2. Computer with reliable Internet Connection. Online course materials require an Internet connection
and browser. A wired Ethernet connection is highly recommended. DSL/cable 1 MB or higher
connection. Wireless and cellphone data connections may experience connection problems.

3. While tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices may allow for some completion of
coursework, they are not guaranteed to work in all areas. Please ensure you have a Windows or
Mac based computer available to complete coursework in the event your selected mobile device
does not meet the needs of the course.
