Digital divide:

This term was notified in the mid-1990s. This term was related to separation of new resources,
modern information, new analytics versions, and has important role in modern technology
information. it is also related to gap between humans which have modern vision and resources than
those who don’t have.

This implicates severe social, economic, ethical and inequality impacts in the society. Today, when
the world is referred to as global village, when people are

Seeking knowledge through modern communications, there are those who don’t even have a
minute communication in the world. According to one survey, one third of Children in the world
don’t have computers. This forms a divide between the society based on commun9ication skills and
use of modern information. This condition and term is referred to as digital divide.

This digital divide also promoting political issues and economic issues to a country.it is the divide
between those with the access to information technology and those without. With the evolution on
this planet Earth, people are struggling to0 adapting to their intense and harsh environment.
Technology was the factor which gave the humanity a choice to adapt a best version of society.
Technology is the sole of the environment. With the advance and modern information, people are
growing at exponential rate, today the technology is our prime importance while the social and
human factors are seen as secondary.

Global divide:
In this modern era, where technology is considered as the native part of the society, the
world is now considered as a global village where everybody has access to technology which is a just
myth.

There is a global digital divide in between the societies, in between the countries in terms of
developing and developed countries.

Not everybody in this globe can access to information and technology.SO it is right to say that there
is a global divide on the base of digital divide. This global divide was basically start from the World
War 1 , when there were so much destruction causing people to live a harsh life just to feed
themselves. This caused a global divide between Asian and American countries.

In Asia, many of the countries are poorer as compared to other western countries. People resources
were less, people were facing famine, exploitation and racism.

They could not get a chance to meet up a new era where there was modern technologies and
information. Our Pakistan is also one of the developing country.it is also facing global divide due to
lack of racism, political issues.
People are facing poverty causing them to grow under the bark. They are just depending for their
existence.

We are poor at information technology.as Japan was also facing global divide when America
attacked them. They were helpless. This creates a global divide.

Inequality in the society also leads to global digital divide.

Social divide:
Referring to digital divide, the main factor the issue is social divide where there is
discrimination in between the peoples. Some people believe that modern technology like
computers, mobiles and internet plays a role in career and successful life for a student.as we know
this is important factor for socio economical privilege but this creates a divide between the poor’s
and rich. Those who can’t afford all these luxuries factors like internet communication are in loss.
This arises a socio economical divide between the peoples. Many deserving students and creative
artist will be in loss. In order to eradicate this social divide, Governments should take an action
providing each and everyone the same kind of facilities. The facility of information and technology
should be equally distributed between the upper and lower class in the society.

The determinants factor of digital divide:

There are at least six determinant factors
that determine the digital divide between countries. These are markets, diffusion, infrastructures,
human resources, competitiveness, and competition.

This includes socio-demographic factors such as income, gender, race, ethnicity, education, age and
location.
1_Availability of the

Infrastructure

(Including the

Availability of related

Technologies e.g. fixed

Phone, mobile phone

And Wi-Fi) :
As we all know modern problems requires modern solutions. Human grow own their
own day by day, year by year, decade by decade. They adopt modern civilization where the use ICT is
necessary. ICT (information and communication)is basically considered as the integral and native
part of the society. Without adopting it nobody can do it own.in the recent past the invention of
telephone led the globe to a marvel success. Telephone was used for communication. Then the
modern ways of communication came in to being like mobiles then smart mobiles. The use of
internet makes the easiest way tohumansfortrading, education, socialcommunication.health, crimality
and other factors can be accessed by the way of internet in the society, social welfare factors are
administered and are solved electronically.

Now we should talk about the availability of the infrastructure to communities to pay a successful
work to environment. Some countries have advanced technologies like western countries i.e.
America, Canada, Russia and many more. They are offering full facilities of technology to their
consumers and people like they are also offering free Wi-Fi access to people. They all have modern
technologies well equipped while the countries which are conserved till now are less developed than
developed countries. They don’t have any infrastructure and rhythm i their technology.

This is the digital divide in between the societies of different countries.

2_Infrastructure

Investment

Skills and

Experience:
It is estimated that the use of investment, skills and experience would be shortcut
for under developed countries to gain a boost to higher level. In this modern era, literacy rate is very
important. However it is not related to use of information and technology but it is essential to learn
about ICT. Productivity rate of any country could be improved by use of latest information and
technology.by investing in the field of ICT the industrialist can gain as much a competitive advantage.
Skills and experience in the field of information and technology is very much potent and necessary.
Globalization is altering and affecting the world economic condition so in this time every nation
needs to develop an interest in investing in the field of information and technology and for this skills
and experience is required.

3_Geography/rural

Urban location:
Modern civilization has the access to every opportunity of internet and
modern information and technology but the access to is far difficult for some rural and under
developed regions of the world. This creates a geographical digital divide in the society. Some
countries in world, some regions don’t even have a broadband access. Like in Pakistan and japan
some are the regions which don’t even have internet connection. Government policies are trying to
give them access to broadband and internet connections.

In general, the challenge of bridging the geographical digital divide should be tackled with a broad
set of regional promotion policies for less-favoured regions.

4_Education/literacy:

Literacy and education are two such factors which are quite arguable but are not related
to information and technology but it is considered as being literate helps in it grow society, new
visions, political participation and internet usage. According to UNESCO, 'Despite the steady rise in
literacy rates over the past 50 years, there are still 773 million illiterate adults around the world,
most of who are women. These numbers produced by the UIS are a stark reminder of the work
ahead to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Target 4.6 to ensure that all
youth and most adults achieve literacy and numeracy by 2030.'

Literacy and education is important for the economic solution, social stabilization, democracy and
economical growth in turn important for information and technology.

5_Age:
Age is an important factor affecting the digital divide. We have two types of people in our
society. Most old people are with conservational environment and don’t adopt modern information
and technology.in contrast to this second one are young people who are radical and have acquired
modern means of access to world. Age is an important factor which influences the society in
different ways. Old people are less interested in use of internet facility. This creates a divide in
between the people of the society with respect to age factor.

6_Cost of access/price:
The prices of technology are an important factor for narrowing the
digital divide in societies. Digital divide is much more in between rich and poor in our societies now a
days.to alleviates this gap we should trade low price technology in our society to abolish gap of
digital divide. It is important that information technology should be patent throughout the society.
Developed and developing countries have much more gap of digital divide like pour Pakistan does
not have its own satellite. We use mean of technology traded from US or China. We are far away
from information technology. The gap could only be narrowed by trading the technology and
information at very low price so that every country in the world could access to this information.

7_Gender:
As we recently discussed that literacy rate in the world is much more in males than in
females. Gender differences are also an important point for digital divide. Most of the females don’t
know how to use internet or how to access to modern technology.in Pakistan females workers are
very less. Mostly males have the right or access to modern information and technology. The web is
certainly not another outskirt without fringes and limits, enveloping all that is extraordinary about
ability to speak freely and liberated from inclination of physical attributes. In any case, it's definitely
not. Ladies battle to pick up balance in any territory managing innovation. Either, ladies are seen as
inept or apathetic about innovation, or they experience the ill effects of one-sided recognitions
Recommendations to bridge digital divide :
It is not easy to minimize the digital
divide but it is not impossible. If we reduce the cost of internet and give access to internet to
everybody we can cut off the digital access to some extent. Many governments are trying to finish
this digital divide by giving the people access to internet, mobiles, computers and vast variety of
technology.

For narrowing the gap of digital divide we should promote low cost technology. Some organizations
and companies are giving people computers and latest technolo0gy to meet their needs in this
modern era. Like inn Pakistan Nawaz Shareef had started the program to give students the laptops
to give a good result in social and academic life using through modern technology. Prime minister
Imran Khan has also adopted the same pattern and gives the students laptops to give the nation a
prosperous future. A smart phone is device very much resemblance to the function of computer. We
should give broadband access to each and every person in our country to narrow the gap of digital
divide.
