This document summarizes an experiment to determine the softening point of bitumen using the ring and ball method. Materials used include steel balls, brass rings, a thermometer, heater, and bath. Procedures involve heating rings filled with bitumen and measuring the temperature when a ball passes through and touches the bottom. For the sample tested, the softening point was determined to be 53.5°C, as the left ring read 54°C and right ring read 53°C. The softening point indicates the temperature at which the bitumen changes from a solid to a liquid state.

Introduction:

The softening point is the temperature when the

ball pass through the ring (bitumen) and falls down
until touch the bottom of the glass so that’s
happen when bitumen become soft by effect of
temperature
The name of this method is ''Ring and Ball"
And we applied this test under some condition

Purposes:
The purpose of this test is to determine the
softening point of the bitumen and this is useful to
classification the bitumen

Materials and Apparatus:

Rings
Steel Balls

Bath Ring Holder and Assembly

Thermometer heater
Figure 1 Shouldered ring, Ball-Centering Guide, Ring Holder, and
assembly of apparatus Showing Two Rings.
Procedures:
 Select bath liquid according the expected softening
point (30c-80c water / more than 80c-150c glycerin / 30c-
110c ethylene)
 Heat the two brass rings
 Heat the bitumen until become liquid and fill each ring
with heated bitumen and let it cool in room temperature
for at least 30min
 After cooled remove the excessive bitumen by heated
knife or spatula to level the top
 using forceps, put the ball in each ball-centering guide.
 Heat the bath from bottom so the temperature will
increased at uniform rate 5C , The maximum acceptable
variation for any 1 min after first 3 min should be ± 0.5ºC.
don’t accept any test when the rate of temperature rise
doesn’t be within these limits.
 Record the temperature by thermometer when the ball
touches the bottom plate , if the difference between two
temperature is more than 1C we should repeat the test

Calculations and Results:

Left side → 54°

Right side → 53°

Rings Temperature, °C Average

First Right Ring 53
53.5
Second left Ring 54
Discussions and Conclusion:

The importance of softening test is to determine the

softening point of bitumen which is means the temperature
that needed to soften the bitumen.
The relation between the softening point and grade of
bitumen is inverse relationship i.g when the grade is low
that’s means the bitumen is more rigid and that’s mean you
need more temperature to soften the bitumen and this led to
high softening point .
is also an indirect measure of viscosity.
We determined the softening point by "ring and ball"
method. we measured the temperature when ball fall
through ring (bitumen) and touches the bottom. for first
right side the temperature was 53c and for second left side
was 54c we accept this test because the variation of two side
was just 1c
We take the average 53.5c. like we said before in this
temperature the bitumen will change to liquid. we need to
avoid this. by use appropriate bitumen in appropriate place
i.e The maximum temperature could happen in area most be
less than the softening point of bitumen that used in this
area.
