Module No. 2: The Internet and World Wide Web

Module Overview: This module allows you to discover the world of ICT in general and
also helps you improve your skills in various applications. The students will create a
foundation of understanding the world of ICT. It also creates real-life scenarios where
you can use these applications and resources properly.

LESSON 2: THE STATE OF ICT TECHNOLOGIES, ONLINE SYSTEMS, FUNCTIONS,

AND PLATFORMS

TRANSFER GOAL/LEARNING OUTCOME:

The students in the long run and on their own will be able to effectively use online
platforms and sites in their everyday lives to help the nation by considering innovations
as God’s design in aiding society’s ways of communication.

OBJECTIVES:
In these lessons, you will learn the following:
1. compare and contrast the differences between online platforms, sites, and content;
2. understand the features of Web 2.0 and the future of the World Wide Web through
Web 3.0; and
3. learn the different trends in ICT and use them to their advantage.

CONTENT FOCUS:

The INTERNET and WORLD WIDE WEB

The Internet is a network of interconnected computers that is now global
Internet born in 1969 - called ARPANET or Advance Research Projects Agency
Network
This was established by the US Department of Defense so that the Military’s
research unit could collaborate or partner with business and government
laboratories.
ARPANET was connection of computers at UCLA, Stanford, UCSB, and Univ. of
Utah.
It is the largest network in the world that connects hundreds of thousands of
individual networks all over the world.
The popular term for the Internet is the “information super highway”.
The Web (World Wide Web) consists of information organized into Web pages
containing text and graphic images.
It contains hypertext links, or highlighted keywords and images that lead to
related information.
A collection of linked Web pages that has a common theme or focus is called a
Web site.
The main page that all of the pages on a particular Web site are organized
around and link back to is called the site’s home page.

Types of Websites
Before reading the brief descriptions about the different websites. Here’s a readable link
to give you more idea about it. Please visit https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/web-1-0-
web-2-0-and-web-3-0-with-their-difference/

 Web 1.0 or Static Web - A STATIC site is one that is usually written in a plain
HTML and what is in the code of the page is what is displayed to the user.
When the World Wide Web was created by Tim Berners-Lee, most web pages were
static. Static (stationary page) in the sense that the page is “as is” and cannot be
manipulated by the user.
 Web 2.0 or Dynamic Web - A DYNAMIC site is one that is written using a
server-side scripting language such as PHP, ASP, JSP or Cold-fusion.
Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing
sites, hosted services, and web applications.
The term was coined by DARCY DINUCCI on January 1999 and Most of the sites we
visit today are Web 2.0.

Features of Web 2.0

Please read and understand this additional information about the features of Web 2.0
https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-web-20-software-tools-applications.html
1. Folksonomy - It allows users to categorize and classify/arrange information using
freely chosen keywords (e.g., tagging).
2. Rich User Experience - Content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s input.
3. Long Tail - Services are offered on demand rather than on a onetime purchase.
4. User Participation - The owner of the website is not the only one who is able to put
content. Others are able to place a content of their own by means of comment, reviews,
and evaluation.
5. Software as a Service - Users will subscribe to a software only when needed rather
than purchasing them.
6. Mass Participation - It is a diverse information sharing through universal web
access.
 Web 3.0 0r Semantic Web/ Intelligent Web –
The 3rd Generation of Internet based services is also referred as intelligent web. To
promote common data and to analyze data in order to have more effective discovery.
The Semantic Web is a movement led by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
The W3C standard encourages web developers to include semantic content in their web
pages.
According to the W3C, “The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows
data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community.
The aim of Web 3.0 is to have machines (or servers) understand the user’s preferences
to be able to deliver web content specifically targeting the user.

Problems of Web 3.0:

1. Compatibility - HTML files and current web browsers could not support Web 3.0.
2. Security - The user’s security is also in question since the machine is saving his or
her preferences.
3. Vastness - The World Wide Web already contains billions of web pages.
4. Vagueness - Certain words are imprecise. The words “old” and “small” would depend
on the user.
5. Logic - Since machines use logic, there are certain limitations for a computer to be
able to predict what the user is referring to at a given time.

Here we would like to talk about the major differences among Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and
Web 3.0. To help you better understand, please watch this Youtube video

Trends in ICT
1. Convergence - Technological convergence is the synergy of technological
advancements to work on a similar goal or task.
2. Social Media - is a website, application, or online channels that enable web users to
create, co-create, discuss, modify, and exchange user generated content.
Kinds of Social Media:

people with the same interests or background.
2. Bookmarking Sites. These are sites that allow you to store and
manage
links to various websites and resources.

5. Microblogging. These are sites that focus on short updates from the
user.
6. Blogs and Forums. These websites allow users to post their opinions
or
knowledge depending on topics that they accessed on said
websites.

3. Assistive Media - is a non-profit service designed to help people who have visual
and reading impairments. A database of audio recordings is used to read to the user.
4. Mobile Technologies - The popularity of smartphones and tablets has taken a major
rise over the years. This is largely because of the devices’ capability to do tasks that
were originally found in personal computers.

smartphones. Symbian was originally developed as a closed- source OS for PDAs in
1998 by Symbian Ltd.
6. WebOS as Open WebOS or LG WebOS is a multitasking operating system for
smart devices such as Smart TVs and it has been used as a mobile operating system.
7. Windows Mobile is a family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft for
smartphones and Pocket PCs.

SYSTEMS, FUNCTIONS AND PLATFORMS

Online Systems - is a system that is connected to the Internet. An offline system would
be a system that is disconnected from the Internet.

blacklists (lists of undesirable websites), updating of the list of file- sharing programs,
and remote access to Child.
Online Platforms - an online marketplace that places one party in touch with another,
such as buyers and sellers.
ONLINE PLATFORM CATEGORIES:
Social Media, Search Engines, Communications Services, Payment Systems,
Advertising Platforms, Creative Content Outlets.
