Abstract

1
The purpose of this document is to reflect on my personal experience by going to an

internship at Faculty of Sports Science at Mahidol University for 48 hours in 7 days. In this

paper, it will include the reflection and worklog of each day during the field which provides

the jobs and roles that have been accomplished. Furthermore, it will give the idea of how

scientific advances can actually benefit the world of sports and athletes. Therefore, this

reflection will help me to get back, analyze, and think about the lessons that I have learned

in order to apply it in future applications.

Day 1 20/10/19

Fitness

3
On the first day of the internship, unfortunately, the light was off all over the Mahidol

University. We were assigned to take care of the fitness, so we had separated our jobs. One

will check and test the working of the equipment and machine as well as the yoga room. For

the other one, the role is to stand by in the reception in order to welcome the customers to

come and use the facilities including the swimming pool. For instance, our job is to collect

their ID card and give them a key to the locker. Also, we need to prepare the towel in case

they did not bring their own.

Today, there was a trainer who teaches me

and my friends about fitness training. She had

demonstrated how to use the equipment correctly

including the function and the benefit of each tool or

machine. After that, we had a chance to play with it

and did some workout. In the afternoon, we learned

how to register the fitness card (ID Card), and she

also taught us how the swimming pool system operates.

I was a bit tired today working without an air conditioner, but I learned how the fitness

room and swimming pool are managed.

Day 2 21/10/19

Biomechanical

4
It was my second day of the internship today. I had a chance to enter the room which

is the area where several biomedical machines are placed. This was my great opportunity to

observe how the specific machine works.

Today, I studied the function of the machine called

Dexa and Lunar. Those are the machines that use ionizing

radiation to show the pictures of the inside of the body in order

to measure bone loss. Later on, I had seen the data that the

machine had collected, and understood how essential the

machine is because it can help people to improve their daily

activities to sustain their bones.

It was a quite interesting day

because I had a new experience to meet with

advanced technology that is able to

investigate our health situation.

Day 3 22/10/19

Laboratory

5
Today is the first day that I used the professional camera. It is a special kind of

camera that can capture the motion and the movement of the body. We learned the function

and names of the materials that are going to be used. After that, we set up the equipment

and camera in order to detect properly. Next, we decided who is going to be an object to

examine the motion.

Motion capture

On this day, we were investigating the various types of

jumping motion, so we learned the process to use the camera to

detect the motion and calculate the data in order to investigate the

person’s motion. During preparation, the person who is going to

be an object needed to stick the marker around the lower body which is the thing that

camera will detect and act as the shape of the body. The important thing is that the markers

are required to stick at the position where the person’s joints are. The record from the

camera will be shown in the computer, so we can see how the person jumps. This can tell

how the legs and the body link together in order to jump.

It was very fun today because I have never seen these

kinds of experiments that deal with our body by myself.

Personally, I was surprised by the camera because it is very

expensive. 11 million baht is the prize of these cameras in

the lab which sounds crazy.

Day 4 23/10/19

Laboratory

Motion Capture

6
What we did today is the

continuation of yesterday, but it was slightly

changed on today’s activities. More advanced

techniques were imported. The difference is

that we were going to record the motion while

we were walking. This time, the object, the one who is going to demonstrate this stimulation,

is needed to stick more markers on the body. Last time, the markers were stuck mainly

around the legs and hips. However, this time, we need to stick it all

around the body including the upper body as well. There is a pad in the

room where it can measure the forces that a person applied to each

step.

Furthermore, it can calculate the distances on each step that the

person normally walks which helps us to understand the individual’s

habits of walking. Also, the graph that we can see on the computer will

be able to assist us to know how the person’s walking form looks. After we finished

recording, we analyzed the result and discussed it.

I was very impressed with how smart electrical gadgets can do to come up with a

clear result. It was a wonderful day that I can interact with those advanced machines and

equipment that I have never thought of.

Day 5 24/10/19

Biomechanical

Today, we went to the main laboratory room

which is the Biomechanical room. On this day we learn about

7
the machine that can measure the individual's ability to exchange the oxygen while he or she

is running on the machine called Treadmill and VO2 max. During the experiment, the person

has to wear a mask that is connected to the receptor which is hung at the back of the body.

The receptor will act as the analyzer to measure the gas that is exchanged inside the

body, and It will collect the data and show it on the screen as a graph level. We had a

chance to observe the process of using these machines.

While the process has been started the instructor will

keep increasing the speed every one minute until the

object gets tired.

Furthermore, surprisingly, one of my friends had volunteered to be an object to participate in

this stimulation, so I had prepared the equipment, read the results ,and reported to the

instructor. Also, the machine can calculate the muscle and calories used while the object is

engaging in the process.

I had a chance to run a little bit on the machine, and it was fun. I enjoyed it because it

can show my current oxygen changes while I am running.

Day 6 25/10/19

Biomechanical

For the 6th day of the internship, we studied the

relationship between the weight of our muscles and the

8
body. There is a machine called BIODEX which is the machine that can measure the mass

of muscles of our specific part of the body. For instance, this machine can calculate my right

leg's weight and the muscle mass. Moreover, this machine can also measure the endurance,

flexibility, and the joint position of the body. We had a chance to play with the machine.

First, we measured the muscle mass. Second, we measured flexibility. Third, we

measured the endurance of the muscles. Finally, we read the numerical data that is shown

on the screen as a table and graph that tells the ratio and the balance of the person's weight

and muscles. It also shows the amount of force that had been exerted.

This can explain whether you have a well body type or not,

and it will be very beneficial to the athletes to detect the injury which

can help the medical profession to cure the condition accurately.

Day 7 27/10/19

Fitness & MU Sports Complex

Badminton Court

On the last day of the internship, on this day, my

friends and I were expected to take care of the badminton

court at MU Sports Complex. In the morning, we met with

the staff of this department and learned the system of the

court. I got permission to get inside the staff room and learn

9
the process of managing the court as well as the schedule settings on the computer. Next, I

got the mission to check the court to be neat and tidy by rearranging the shoes, checking the

bathroom, and cleaning the badminton court.

In the afternoon, we were assigned to be the guard. My role is to make sure that

everyone who comes and plays is following the rules. If they do not I have to go and warn

them. It was tough for me because I have to warm someone who I never met before which I

was a bit nervous about. In the end, I and my friends were allowed to play badminton on the

court as a reward for taking care of the court. We enjoyed it so much and look forward to

coming back again.

Conclusion

In a final consideration, in this period of time during the internship, it was a wonderful

valuable experience that made me open my mind and learn how science is actually applied

in the sport’s world. I have noticed how essential it is to understand the body movements

and how each part of it links together in order to come out with the accurate result which can

help athletes be able to push their limits to create the best record. Also, I have learned to

work at the behind side of the stimulation as well as worked as a shadow of the experts and

staff. Therefore, evey process and stimulation can not be done by only one person. It

requires the ability to interact with both machines and people including teamwork in order to

link everythings together to accomplish the goal successfully.
