CSR Activities of Philippine Company: Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola Philippines was honored by the Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards
(ACES) as one of the Top Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Advocates in Asia because of their
unwavering commitment to sustainable business operations in the Philippines. The Top CSR
Advocates award is presented to companies that place genuine attention to the needs and
wellbeing of all its stakeholders as concretized by initiatives that focus on community engagement,
environmental protection, and social empowerment.
In the Philippines, Coca-Cola follows a philosophy called “Go beyond Good”. In line with this, they
are focusing focusing on the long-term and they start various programs and initiatives that uplift
communities and protect the environment. The Coca-Cola CSR activities in the Philippines focuses
on various pillars including Waste, Water, Women empowerment, and more.
The Company’s most recent initiative is called “World Without Waste vision”. It is a commitment to
collect and recycle of 100% of its product packaging by 2030. This has a goal of improving waste
management in the county. In this circular economy model, its packaging goes into a full cycle.
Once their product is consumed and their packaging is considered as waste, it is again transformed
into recycled PET bottles or other useful products. Collection systems and recycling efforts are made
with the aid of public and private partners in multiple communities in the country. They also
invested in an advanced first PET bottle recycling facility in line with this program.
The Company also practices responsible water stewardship by understanding the importance of
water for their business and for life in general. Currently, the company has gone beyond its initial
goal of 100% water replenishment to 124%. Its operations have cut down water consumption by
27% from 2014 to 2018, saving an equivalent of 5.27 billion liters of water, and have recovered,
treated, and returned more than 17.5 million liters of wastewater since 2014.
Another initiative of the company with regards to water, is that they have established their “Agos”
Program. This program provides communities access to water at the same time, protecting
watersheds. In relation to this, they developed a technology called “Agos Ram Pump” that elevates
water to far-flung communities. Estimated 215,000 members of 210 Agos sites in 49 provinces now
has access to water. In Marawi, “Agos” was able to bring a mobile potable water plant that served
more than 500,000 gallons of safe drinking water to families and students.
Coca-Cola also has a program for female sari-sari store owners called “Sari-Sari Store Training and
Access to Resources (STAR)”. The company recognizes that these small businesses drives 90% of
their local business. In this program, women are provided skills training, peer mentoring, and access
to resources to grow their businesses. This program covers 16 regions and 68 provinces, the STAR
program has impacted the lives of over 150,000 women. It was discovered that 97% of the
STARpreneurs found the training useful and 98% of them applied their learnings to their business.
After the program, 65% of the trainees felt confident of their future financial stability.
True enough that Coca-Cola really understands the importance of Social Responsibility. Aside from
setting goals for their financials and operations to maintain their position in the market, they also
set really good goals in contributing for the greater good. Aside from their general social
responsibility efforts as a multinational company, their local operations also make efforts that are
directed to certain conditions of the country wherein they are operating. Being one of the world’s
leading beverage giants, they are doing a good job in setting a benchmark for other companies to
aim for.
