Long I Highlighter Hunt

Read the story and highlight all the LONG I words (ie, igh, i_e). Don’t let
Short I words trick you! Write all the highlighted words at the bottom.

Last night, at nine o’clock, five of my best

friends came to my house to camp out. We tried
to make s’mores, but we couldn’t get them right.
The marshmallows kept catching on fire, so we ate
pie instead! After a lot of playing, we got tired. It
was time for bed. We slipped into our sleeping
bags and cried, “Goodnight!”
Sort It Out!
Teacher will laminate and
cut the categories and
sorting cards. Students
will sort the words into
the correct Long I spelling
pattern category. Once
sorted, they will record
the words on their
recording sheets.

Write the Room
Teacher will laminate and cut
out the cards then hide them
all around the room – under
tables, on shelves,
everywhere! Students will
search the room with a
clipboard and recording sheet.
When they find a word, they
will write it into the correct
Long I category. They will
continue to search until they
have found all 10 words (12 if
you write your own on the
blank cards)

Dictionary
Students will create their own
Long I dictionary by choosing a
Long I word to write and
illustrate on each page. Copy
as many pages as you want
students to complete. Run
them front/back on the
copier and use the staple
settings to staple twice down
the left side. Then cut down
the middle to create 2 books.
This works well in a writing
center.
