Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Adding and subtracting Kahoot

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Contructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://kahoot.it/

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to the SRT activity, students will be able to choose a partner. With their partner they will take turns
asking each other addition and subtraction problems within 20. They will be asked to solve it the best they
can in their head but if they need extra support they can use whiteboards or manipulatives. The students will
do this for about 20 minutes.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
The students will be asked to pull out a mobile device or use one of the class-set technologies. They will go to
Kahoot and join the game. When it starts they will have limited time to answer addition and subtraction
questions within 20. The time limit for each question will encourage them to use mental strategies to solve
the problems. Kahoot also allows answers to be anonymous so the students will not be able to see what
questions everyone got wrong, only the top 5 players. The game will keep them engaged while they practice
their fluency and the competition aspect will increase motivation. The activity will take about 10-15 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The students will be able to see if they got the question right or wrong almost after each round is over. The
teacher will also be able to see this and assess if certain questions need more practice or re-taught.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity is over the teacher will look at the most missed questions and review them. The
students will also be able to ask questions about problems if they would like and the teacher will discuss them
with the class.

How will the data be used?

The data will be used to assess which areas need extra review. The teacher will also look for patterns in the
data to see if certain types of questions mess the students up. Once the data is reviewed, the teacher can
work through problems that need extra practice with the whole class. If students are really struggling with the
mental solving aspect of the problems, then the teacher can discuss some strategies that could help the
students.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

This activity is fluency practice for students. The more fluent they become adding and subtracting within 20
the smoother their assignments and test will go because they save time by using metal strategies.
Reflective Practice:
I think this is a good tool to use because it incorporates a timed aspect to push students to use mental
strategy, but it is not in the form of a quiz which stresses some students out. Since it is a game, students will
have fun while practicing and not even notice the formative assessment element of it. This is designed as a
review and practice lesson, so it can be extended by assessing the data and re-teaching problem areas for the
whole class.
