Hec-Ras Report Idy

This document provides instructions for using HEC-RAS 4.0 hydraulic modeling software. HEC-RAS is a one-dimensional hydraulic model used to analyze river channel flow and floodplains. It requires geometry, flow, and plan data. The steps outlined import cross-section geometry, flow data, perform a steady-flow simulation, and view outputs. The objective is to analyze the Sungai Madang river in Malaysia using HEC-RAS to determine water surface profiles under steady flow conditions. Key outcomes are performing one-dimensional steady flow calculations in natural channels.

HEC-RAS (HEC River Analysis System)

Introduction
HEC-RAS is a computer program that models the hydraulics of water flow through
natural rivers and other channels. The program is one-dimensional, meaning that there is no
direct modeling of the hydraulic effect of cross section shape changes, bends, and other two-
and three-dimensional aspects of flow. The program was developed by the US Department of
Defense, Army Corps of Engineers in order to manage the rivers, harbors, and other public
works under their jurisdiction; it has found wide acceptance by many others since its public
release in 1995.

HEC-RAS is a one-dimensional steady flow hydraulic model designed to aid hydraulic

engineers in channel flow analysis and floodplain determination.

objective

 Import and edit cross-sectional geometry data

 Import and edit flow data from HEC-HMS
 Perform a steady flow simulation
 View and analyze HEC-RAS output

Components

There are three required components--the Geometry data, Flow data, and Plan data.
The Geometry data, for instance, consists of a description of the size, shape, and connectivity
of stream cross-sections. Likewise, the Flow data contains discharge rates. Finally, Plan data
contains information pertinent to the run specifications of the model, including a description of
the flow regime.
How it Works

1. create a new folder on the desktop, This folder works as location for the saved data.

2. Click the HEC – RAS 4.0 icon to open. (The following window will appear)
All data used in the program must be in SI units

3. select the working directory, and then a title and file name by clicking File and select
New Project

4. click on the 3rd short cut icon (edit/enter geometric data) and select River Reach and
draw a plan of a river that we want to analyze.

River’s name: Sungai Madang, Kinarut, Papar.

5. Click Cross Section icon and insert data into the Cross Section Coordinates and
River station column. In the Cross Section Coordinates column, ‘station’ represents
the distance from the left bank.

6. Key in Main Channel Bank Stations. Left bank will be taking the value from first
station and Right bank from the last station. For this exercise, Manning’s n values
taken for LOB, Channel, and ROB are 0.11, 0.05 and 0.11 respectively. Downstream
Reach lengths are 120.

7. After all cross section data key in, then click short key of Steady Flow Analysis. Fill
Plan Name’s as PLAN 03, Geometry File as geo03 and Steady Flow File as flow data
1. Before compute data, save all file as linked to main folder as shown below.
8. Click compute, then river as required will automatically can be determined.
