Activity in Eyes Concept

Nurse Jet is caring for Juan Miguel Lopez Zobel Ayala de Batumbakal, who was diagnosed with acute closed angle glaucoma. She knows that this type of glaucoma causes eye pain and is caused by a rapid rise in intraocular pressure. Nurse Jet performed tonometry to measure Mr. Batumbakal's intraocular pressure and noticed he could no longer distinguish between red and blue, indicating damage to the cones in his retina. She understands the causes and treatments of acute closed angle glaucoma and is providing appropriate education and monitoring to Mr. Batumbakal.

ACTIVITY NUMBER 1 IN EYES CONCEPT

Situation: Juan Miguel Lopez Zobel Ayala de Batumbakal was diagnosed with Acute Close
Angle Glaucoma. He is being seen by Nurse Jet.
1. What specific manifestation would nurse Jet see in Acute close angle glaucoma that she
would not see in an open angle glaucoma?
Answer: D. Pain- in Acute close angle glaucoma there is an abrupt onset of eye pain.

2. Nurse Jet knew that Acute close angle glaucoma is caused by:
Answer: D. An abrupt rise in IOP from 8 to 15 mmHg. There is a rapid increase in
IOP.

3. Nurse Jet performed a TONOMETRY test to Mr. Batumbakal. What does this test
measures?
Answer: B. Measures the Intra Ocular Pressure.

4. The Nurse notices that Mr. Batumbakal cannot anymore determine RED from BLUE.
The nurse knew that which part of the eye is affected by this change?
Answer: D. Cones (Retina) they are photoreceptor cells in the retinas of vertebrate eyes
including the human eye. They respond differently to light of different wavelengths, and
are thus responsible for color vision.

5. Nurse Jet knows that Aqueous Humor is produce where?

Answer: D. Ciliary Body. The ciliary body produces the fluid in the eye called aqueous
humor. It also contains the ciliary muscle, which changes the shape of the lens when your
eyes focus on a near object.

6. Nurse Jet knows that the normal IOP is:

Answer: A. 8-21 mmHg

7. Nurse Jet wants to measure Mr. Batumbakal’s CN II Function. What test would Nurse Jet
implement to measure CN II’s Acuity?
Answer: B. Snellen’s Chart. It is used to check vision acuity.

8. The Doctor orders pilocarpine. Nurse Jet knows that the action of this drug is to:
Answer: A. Contract the Ciliary muscle. It acts on the ciliary muscle and causes it to
contract. This action facilitates the rate that aqueous humor leaves the eye to decrease
intraocular pressure

9. The doctor orders timolol [timoptic]. Nurse Jet knows that the action of this drug is:
Answer: B. Reduce production of Aqueous Humor. The drug belongs to a class of
drugs known as beta-blockers which works by decreasing the amount of fluid within the
eye.
10. When caring for Mr. Batumbakal, Jet teaches the client to avoid:
Answer: B. Bending at the waist to prevent putting extra pressure on your eye.

11. Mr. Batumbakal has undergone eye angiography using an Intravenous dye and
fluoroscopy. What activity is contraindicated immediately after procedure?
Answer: C. Watching TV because after the test makes the eye sensitive to light and to
improve your chances of a speedy recovery and allow the cornea to progress through the
acute stages.

12. If Mr. Batumbakal is receiving pilocarpine, what drug should always be available in any
case systemic toxicity occurs?
Answer: A. Atropine Sulfate, the pharmacologic antagonist for pilocarpine.
