The Insecticidal Potential of Chili Pepper (Capsicum Annuum) Extract

This document discusses testing the insecticidal potential of chili pepper extract against termites. It begins with background on insecticides and their classification. It then provides background on chili peppers and their properties in the Philippines. The study aims to determine if aqueous extract from chili pepper leaves has any insecticidal effect on termites. If successful, it could provide an alternative solution to the common problem of termite damage. The document outlines the experimental method, problem statement, hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitations, and defines relevant terms.

CHAPTER I

The Insecticidal Potential of Chili Pepper (Capsicum Annuum) Extract

1.1 Introduction

An insecticide is a substance used to kill insects. They include ovicides and

larvicides used against insect eggs and larvae, respectively. Insecticides are used in

agriculture, medicine, industry and by consumers. Insecticides are claimed to be a

major factor behind the increase in agricultural 20th century's productivity. Nearly all

insecticides have the potential to significantly alter ecosystems; many are toxic to

humans; some concentrate along the food chain.Insecticides can be classified in two

major groups: systemic insecticides, which have residual or long-term activity; and

contact insecticides, which have no residual activity.Furthermore, one can distinguish

three types of insecticide. Natural insecticides, such as nicotine, pyrethrum and neem

extracts, made by plants as defenses against insects. Inorganic insecticides, which are

metals. Organic insecticides, which are organic chemical compounds, mostly working

by contact.

1.2 Background of the Study

The chili pepper, or suing labuyo as many of us know it, is a favorite spice

of many people around the world, including the Philippines. There are people who

cannot eat anything without the taste of real hot pepper. Pepper have health-sustaining
properties as well. They have been found to have rich Vitamin A and C contents. Here

in the Philippines, even the leaves of the chili pepper are eaten as a vegetable. The

goal of this project is to find out if aqueous extract from chili pepper leaves have any

insecticidal effect on insects, specifically termites. Termites are common problem

everywhere. They cause destruction in furniture, house, or anything made of wood. If

this research proves to be successful, there can now be an alternative solution to this

problem and it is also possible that it can be used in the fight against another insect

pest. This research will only test the leaves of the chili pepper for insecticidal properties.

Only one concertation of the solution will use for testing. The chemical contents of the

extract will not be determined. The extract will only be tested on termites.

1.3 Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Safety defines much of the home life, and pesticides do an impeccable work of

endangering it. With the influx of insecticides and anti-pest products in the markettoday

(and the easy access that comes with the trade), exposure has just become alooming

prospect. One fact of life is that apart from your family, you’re sharing your home with a

diverse array of pests: ants in the cupboard, wasps in your sunroom, termites in the

cabinets, or maybe bugs having their own little party in your garden. Your first instinct,

of course, is to run to the store and get the most effective pesticide out there. But little do

you know that the dangers of pesticides are much bigger than the ones you’re trying to

solve. Here is a diagram that shows the process of making an affordable insecticide in

your home:

1.4 Statement of the Problem

This study is all about determining the effectiveness of chili pepper (capsicum

annum) against termites.

In addition, the researchers aim to unlock the following queries:

1. Does chili pepper (capsicum annum) really effective to kill those termites?

2. Does chili pepper (capsicum annum) will help to eliminate the number of

termites?

1.5 Hypothesis

Ho: there is no difference between chili pepper (capsicum annum) pesticides for

termites and commercial pesticides for termites.

H1: there is significant difference between chili pepper (capsicum annum)

pesticides for termites and commercial pesticides for termites.

1.6 Significance of the study

The study is worth conducting because it provides new information for the

researchers to know different alternatives of insecticides

1.7 Scope and Limitation

The main goal of the study is to test the effectiveness of chili pepper (capsicum

annum) for the termites and how much money we can save by not buying those

expensive pesticides.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Insecticide – pesticides that are formulated to kill, harm, repel or mitigate one or more

species of insect.

Termites - They live within the wood they consume and oftentimes infest walls and

furniture. When a colony has matured, winged, swarming termites can be seen around

windows and doors.

Chili pepper - are primarily used as spices, or minor ingredients in various dishes, spice

blends and sauces.Capsaicin is the main bioactive plant compound in chili peppers,

responsible for their unique pungent (hot) taste and many of their health benefits.

Crops –is used as a subject to test the effectiveness of chili pepper as pesticides.

Pest – a numerous small animals that causing problems for people especially to the

farmers by damaging the crops.
