Pump Design

This document provides details for sizing the collection tank and pumps for two water supply projects. For the first project, the required collection tank capacity is calculated as 15 cubic meters. A submersible pump with 30 kW power and discharge of 12 liters per second is selected to pump water from the intake to the collection tank, with a total dynamic head of 138.96 meters. For the second project, the same 30 kW submersible pump model is selected to pump water from the intake to the collection tank, with a total dynamic head of 140.96 meters and discharge of 12 liters per second over a pumping main distance of 1144 meters.

Sizing of collection tank

Name of Project :

Total water demand at design year 180000 L

Safe yield of Source 9.00 Lps
Total quantity of water collected perday 777600 L
Here, water demand equal to water available at the source
Rate of pumping 8 Lps
Pumping hour required: 6.25
Adopting single shift pumping Pumping hours 6:00 to 12:15

Time Period Inflow to RT Outflow from RT Surplus Deficit

From To L L L L

6:00 12:15 202500 180000 -22500

0 0

Total 202500 180000 0 -22500

Hence capacity of Sump -22500 L

Hence adopt a ferrocement RT of -24 m³ capacity
However adopt the size of collection tank as 20 m³ for equilization purpose.

11.Volume of Water Collection Tank

\ Total head, H = 38.68 m

Water Hammer Pressure

Since the pump is closed suddenly, which results the water hammer pressure at
the delivery pipe. The water hammer pressure, Ph is given by:
V
Ph 
g 1 d  1 
 1  
w  K t.E  2m 

Where,
V = velocity of flow in pipe(m/s)
g = acceleration due to gravity(m/s²)
w = specific weight of water (N/m³)
K = Bulk modulus of water(N/m²)
d = bore of pipe(m)
t = thickness of pipe(m)
E = Youngs modulus of elasticity of pipe material(N/m²)
1/m = Poisson ratio
For galvanised iron pipe and for above condition.
V = 0.66 m/s
g = 9.81 m/s²
w = 9810.00 N/m³
K = 2060.00 N/mm²

Max. water hammer pressure, Ph = 0.281 N/mm²
= 2.76 kg/cm²
Max. pressure that should be withstand by conduit material:
(static pressure+water hammer pressure = 6.70 kg/cm² < 10.00 kg/cm²
Thus the pipe can withstand the Pressure

FOR GI
Level difference = 77.00 m
However available size of GI pipe nearest to 134 mm is: = 150.00 mm
Hence, use 150 mmØ GI pipe having bore = 150.00 mm
Here, discharge, Q = 12.000 Lps
For 150 mmØ GI
Pipe bore, D = 150.00 mm
Design length, L = 620.00 m
Velocity of flow, V = Q/A = 4Q/πD² = 0.68 m/s
Absolute roughness = 1.00 mm
Coefficient of friction, f = 0.0343
Using Darcy-Weisbach equation
Headloss, H1 = f.L/D.v²/2g = 3.66 m
Headloss = 3.66

Total head for pumping = Level difference + headloss + Suction head

Depth of collection tank = 0.00 m
However take the dyanimic level of water for submersible pump as 1.2 m below the collection t
= 1.20 m
\ Total head, H = 81.86 m

This pressure may withstand by GI pipe medium duty with welded joints.
Above 100 m head from source, use medium duty pipe
