Turbo Machines-DA 3: Design of Radial Swept Impeller Wheel For Centrifugal Blower For HVAC Application

This document summarizes the design of a radial swept impeller wheel for a centrifugal blower used in an HVAC application. The blower needs to handle an air flow rate of 2550 cubic meters per hour at a total head rise of 1000 Pascals. Research papers and a website were used to design the impeller. The impeller wheel was designed to meet the requirements and be compatible with the proprietary volute casing used by the HVAC manufacturer. Finally, a 5 HP motor was selected to drive the assembled blower.

Design of Radial Swept Impeller Wheel for Centrifugal Blower for

HVAC Application

1. Introduction to Problem Statement:

Figure 1: Schematic Plan of the HVAC System

A room of 7mx5mx4.5m is to be ventilated in order to maintain human comfort level.

Also, the environment in the room contains some suspended dust particles due to machining
processes occurring in the room. Hence, this air needs to be circulated appropriately and
filtered to avoid any respiratory disorders.
In a given HVAC system, the air in the environment to be controlled (here the room) is
continuously circulated. Hence, this rate of air circulation is measured in Air Changes Per
Hour (ACPH). As per standards, for a class 100000 [1] room, 15ACPH is recommended.
Hence, a volume of air 15 times the volume of the room at NTP is the direct implication of
15ACPH. As the volume of room is 5*7*4.5 or 157.5 m3, hence the volume flow rate of air
through the HVAC system will be 15*157.7 or 2362.5 m3/h.
Air is freed from the suspended particles as it passes through the Air Handling Unit
(AHU). The AHU consists of a centrifugal blower and a set of filters at the outlet of the
blower. The suction of the blower is connected to the exhaust vents in the room and the outlet
of the blower is connected to the fresh/filtered air supply ducts (As illustrated in Fig.1).
Hence, as the filters at the outlet of the blower will pose a resistance to the air flow, hence to
account for it, the discharge and the total head raise caused by the blower is slightly
increased.
Based on previous work experiences, Mr. Lalchand from Blue Star (AHU
manufacturing company) guided me to consider the discharge of the blower as 2550 m3/hr or
0.708 m3/s. Further, from previous work experiences, the pressure drop caused by the ducting
and the filters needs to be accounted for. Hence, the total head raise caused by the blower was
considered to be 4 inch of water column or 1000Pa. Due to ease of manufacturing, ease of
maintenance, lower machining cost, lower material cost and small lead time; a radial swept
centrifugal blower is used in the AHU for HVAC system.
I was fortunate to be come in contact with Mr. Lalchand via a personal contact found
by my father in December of 2019. It is under the experienced guidance of Mr. Lalchand
which has made this assignment possible.
Hence, the problem statement as received by Blue Star was to design the impeller
wheel of a radial swept centrifugal blower with 4-inch water column head and a 1500
cfm discharge. The drive for the blower used would be a 4-pole standard electric motor.
All other required constants are to be assumed.
NOTE: The volute casing is not to be designed as it is a proprietary standard design of
the company and is manufactured as per the diameter of the impeller wheel.
