There once was a very greedy man who sold everything he owned and bought a brick of gold. He buried
the gold brick behind a hut that was across the road from his shabby old house. Every day, the greedy man
went across the road and dug up his gold brick to look at it.
After a while, a workman noticed the greedy man going across the road every day, and decided to
follow him. The next day, the greedy man dug down for his gold brick, but the hole was empty. He pulled at
his hair, and cried out in sorrow. “My beautiful gold brick!” he wept.
A neighbor came running, and asked the greedy man what had happened. When the greedy man told
him, the neighbor just shrugged his shoulders. “Why be so sad?” said the neighbor. Just go get a rock and
put it in that hole, and pretend that it is gold. It will do you as much good as the gold did.”
“Come boys, what shall we do? Let’s play hide and seek,” suggested Fred.
“Oh yes! That will be fun for all of us. Who will shut his eyes? Fred, will you shut your eyes?” asked
Roy.
“Yes, I‘ll shut my eyes while you all go and hide,” replied Fred. Then Fred stood by the tree and shut
his eyes, and the other boys ran off to hide. Pretty soon Fred shouted, “Boys, are you all hidden? Well, here I
go. One, two, three, here I come!”
Fred started to look for the hidden boys. He spotted Andrew hiding in a box. “Ha! I found you,
Andrew. You are in that box!” shouted Fred.
Then Fred said to Roy, “I found you, Roy. You are under the sofa.”
Fred could not find Frank. Fred kept looking and then saw Frank behind the curtain. “Oh there he is! I
found you, Frank. Come out from behind the curtain. I see your black shoes!” shouted Fred.
Now it was Andrew’s turn to stand by the door and shut his eyes while the other boys hid.
Leslie’s family loves hosting a big Thanksgiving party. They invite all of their family, lots of friends, and
even a few neighbors. Leslie and her parents spend three days making food for Thanksgiving Party. They
make turkey, mashed potatoes, corn and sweet potatoes. Some of their friends and family members also
make food for the big dinner. Grandma makes her special fruit salad. Uncle Sam makes his famous pumpkin
pie, ad their neighbors make a ham. Leslie’s dad and grandpa move some of the furniture to make room for
all of the people. They also set up two extra tables so there are enough seats for everyone. Thanksgiving
dinner is special at Leslie’s house.
After school, Sam looked at the poster on the library wall. It said that help was needed to clean up the pond
at Sun Park on Frog Day. The frogs were dying. So Sam wrote down the telephone number from the poster.
The next day, Sam told his teacher and class about the poster and the frogs. On Saturday, Mrs. Webb, and
the children, went to Sun Park. Mr. Thomas met them by the pond. He gave out some plastic bags, nets,
buckets, and rubber gloves. Sam’s group had to pick up litter around the pond. Mr. Thomas’ group had to
pull out the weeds. Then Mr. Thomas gave each child a plastic bag full of tadpoles. Everyone followed him
to the pond to let the tadpoles go. Tadpoles enjoy their new home.
There are so many ways to travel. The most common way to travel is probably in some type of motorized
vehicle. If you are travelling with your family and you are not going far away, you could take a car. If you
want to go somewhere with a lot of people, you could go in a van or a bus. If you need to travel through the
water, boats are another kind of transportation. We can go on small boats to travel in a close place. Big ships
can take us to faraway lands. Submarines travel in the water also. They go way down deep into the water.
Airplanes are also a great way to travel. Many people choose to fly in jet airplanes if they need to go far
away and want to get there quickly. An airplane is fun to ride in because you can see the Earth from way up
high.
“Do not go outside without your warm coat, Tom. It is very cold, and the snow lies thick on the ground. If
you do, then you will catch cold, and you will be sick.”
“I feel quite warm. I don’t need to wear a warm coat.”
“Yes, you do. In here we have a large fire. Outside there is no fire to keep you warm, and the cold wind
blows. If you have no warm coat on, you will feel cold.”
However, Tom thought he knew best, so he went outside with no coat on. Tom caught a bad cold and cough.
He was in bed quite sick.
Jack, Will and Tom were supposed to play on the frozen pond the next day, but now Tom was too sick to go.
When he was in bed, Tom thought how silly he had been. He would try to do all that he was told when he
got well.
Cats are small, tame and furry mammals that are often kept as pets and farm animals. There are over 30
different kinds of pet cats. They have different body shapes and sizes, coloring, fur length, eye color, tail
length, voice and temperament. House cats do not like swimming. Cats like to eat meat and will kill and eat
small mammals, birds, fish, frogs, lizards and snakes. Cats started living with people over 7,000 years ago
and still live with is today.
Seeds come from plants. When seeds are ripe, they leave the plants and find a new place to grow. Seeds are
of many shapes and sizes. Seeds are moved in different ways. Some seeds are moved by the wind. These
seeds are small and light and when the wind stops blowing, these seeds fall. Some seeds are moved by
animals. Some seeds stick to the fur or wool of animals. Other seeds are eaten by animals. Some seeds are
moved by the water. They float on the top of the water until they reach land. Seeds are moved in may ways.
When the seeds stop moving, they can start growing. Some seeds grow into new plants.
Aida is a kind-hearted girl, and one day when crossing a bridge, she saw two boys in the stream, trying to
drown a little dog. So, she ran to the shore and cried loudly, “Oh! How can you be so cruel to that poor little
dog?”
The boys looked at her in wonder, and one of them said, “Father told us to drown it.” The dog had reached
the bank, crept toward Aida.
“Poor little fellow”, she said, patting his head, “Will you give him to me?”
“Yes”, said the boys, “You may have him and welcome”.
Aida thanked the boys and ran home. “Oh Mama!”, she cried, “look at this dear little dog; two boys were
trying to drown him and I asked them to give him to me. May I keep him, Mama?”
“My dear child”, said Mrs. San Juan, “I am very glad to hear that you saved the little dog from pain.”

John’s mother asked, “Where did you get it, John?”
“Frank caught it in the brook. I went to the brook to splash in the water and I saw this little fish. Then I
told Frank about the fish, and he ran to get his fishing rod. He put the rod into the water and caught the fish,
and I put it into this bucket.”
“Well, what will you do with it?” asked John’s mother.
“I will keep it, mom,” replied John.
“But, my boy, it will not live in that bucket. You should put it back into the brook,” replied his mother.
John frowned. “I wish I could keep it. It is so pretty! May I put it into the pond?”
“No, John,” said his Mom. “You must put it into the brook. A trout will not live in the warm pond. The
trout needs to go back to its home: the clear, cold brook.”
A little girl went in search of flowers for her mother. It was early in the day, and the grass was wet.
Sweet little birds were singing all around her.
What do you think she found besides flowers? She found a nest with young birds in it.
While she was looking at them, she heard the mother bird chirp as if to say, “Do not touch my children,
little girl, for I love them dearly.”
The little girl thought how dearly her own mother loved her.
So she left the birds. Then picking some flowers, she went home, and she told her mother what she had
seen and heard.

There is a new water park in town. We go there on the first day of summer. It has pools and water slides.
There are sprinklers, too. The slides are scary at first. After the first ride, we love the water slides. The
sprinklers are cool on hot days. One of the pools make its own waves. All the kids try to surf the waves. It is
really fun. The water park can be very crowded. There are many kids and adults, but they do not allow pets.
We really like the ice cream at the snack bar. They also sell pop and donuts. We all love the new water park.
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Jack, and he lived with his mother. The old woman got her living
by spinning, but Jack was so lazy. They called him Lazy Jack. His mother told him that he should begin to
work for his porridge.
Jack went out and hired himself to a farmer for a penny; but as he was coming home, he lost a penny. “You
boy,” said his mother, “you should have put it on your pocket”. “I’ll do so another time”, replied Jack.
The next day, Jack hired himself to a cow keeper who gave him a jar of milk for his day’s work. Jack put the
jar into the large pocket of his jacket, spilling it all before he got home. “Dear me!” said the old woman;
“you should have carried it on your head”. “I’ll do so another time”, said Jack.
He hired himself to a farmer who gave him a cream cheese. Jack went home with cream cheese on his head.
By the time he got home, the cheese was all spoilt.
